Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

Song of the Day: iravinil aattam from navaraathiri.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/iravinil.rm
- Sriram Lakshman writes:
The first point that strikes one while listening to the song: Apart from the eerie cum reflective feel it gives out well, there are a few places in the tune where there is chromatic scaling. Both interludes (the first interlude is repeated before the III stanza) have a lovely accordian-violin handover. Second stanza has a different tune, much like mama's several tunes. TMS' singing obviously. When the tune scales up within the stanzas, he ushers in a sense of seriousness and casts away the abandon he effectively portrays otherwise in other places in the song. KD focuses on one message, forget about what has transpired, forget about what is to happen, values held close to the chest can go for a toss...yes, come on, let's do it. As is his wont, bringing in a global perspective and seamlessly merging it with issue at hand, in other words, painting the current situation against the vast canvas of existence is a natural extension of his thinking. A natural culmination of wisdom arising out of his gung-ho attitude towards living in general and the attitude to appreciate/savour nuances of anything.
KVM's tunes in the charanams, in general seem to start off as a docile (not being derogatory) prod at a different angle of the tune established in the pallavi only to climax gloriously. In this case, the tune is backed up by triple congos in the pallavi and the tabla takes over in the stanzas.
The violin pieces/counters in the first and the third stanzas are to be savoured for eternity.

I can't listen to any streaming audio in my office anymore due to a few restrictions. But that loss of listening to this beautiful song was amply compensated by the KVM thread I was led to through the link mentioned above.
It is really fascinating to read those postings (I read a few and they were mostly by Mr.Manisekar) on KV Mahadevan’s compositions. I think they have the value of understanding and appreciating the taste of a generation whose musical sensibility seems to me very admirable.

Maalai - an unusual tune from IR, those days whenever an IR movie was released, I used to eagerley wait for something innovative and new. Vijay, your observation of the abaswaram was on the dot. Wonder why IR didnt fix it.

Good one, bb. And SL is as engrossing as ever!
As Mani Sir had written, the highpoint was the magnificent Shankardas therukkoothu 'raja maharaja vandhEnE', where TMS, SCK, PS, Sivaji & Savitri have a blast. S.C.Krishnan was particularly wonderful in the song- listen to his prolonged 'vandhEnE'!
Another song that seems to have been left out in the album listing is 'sollavaa kathai sollavaa' by PS, that begins with a short thogayara 'peNNendRu bhoomithanil' by Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi.

Who on earth is this pArA?
It is one of the most hilarious review of AE. The guy seems to have a good sense of humor. And his sole intention of the review was to make people reading it laugh. Thats it. Nothing to do with what the movie is actually...

Song of the Day: kallellaam maaNikka kallaagumaa from aalaya maNi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/kallellaam.rm
- Sung by TMS and L.R.Eswari. Composed by Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy. Lyrics by Kannadasan. A classic to kick off the week.
- The lyrics for the song is here: http://www.newtfmpage.com/ppp/kallellaam.html . There is a bit of interesting discussion on the lines
"undeNdru solvathundhan kaN allavaa
illaiyendru solvathundhan idai allavaa"
in that page.
- Notes for the song: http://www.newtfmpage.com/notes/old/kl.txt
- There are few songs that benefit from excellent humming more than this one. LRE's humming can also be found in "pavaLakkodiyilE muththukkaL".

Wonderful song it is!
bb, I'm unable to read the Tamil link. But what I feel is perhaps Kannadasan didn't know who was to feature in the song when he wrote the second line you have quoted :)
LRE's humming bestows immortality to this song. Some other songs which remain special thanks to LRE's humming are 'Ettil ezhuthi vaithen' and 'Ennirandu pathinaaru vayathu'. She makes even her fleeting prsence memorable- be it the brief lullaby in 'Veedu varai uravu' or the lullaby part in 'Manikka thottil ingirukka'. What an artiste!

Aalayamani(1962) was Produced by P.S.Veerappa
& Directed by K.Shankar
K.Shankar had 2 released that year(one with Shivaji -Aalayamani and one with MGR-kalangarai vilakkam)
Coming to Aalayamani classic performance by Shivaji,BS & SSR
M.R.Radha,Vijayakumari,Pushpalatha play the given role in their style
All songs were hit
Instant pick from the movie is
Ponnai virumbu boomiyile by TMS
other noteworthy songs are
Maanattam thanga mayilattam by PS,
Kannana kannanukku by PS,SG
SOTD,
thookam un kangalai by SJ(for vijayakumari)
satti suttadhada by TMS
All were smash hits
Shivaji's performance was excellent (the scenes where he goes mad and says Meena bommai )
SOTD -- shivaji tries to reproduce BS's image in Paper thru painting. Saro poses and he imagines her as the heroines of ancient epics and describes them in this poem(ofcourse in style by TMS) while the beautiful humming which flows by LRE is worth mentioning.
Thanks
