kanodu kanbathellam thalaiva is abheri and

vasu,
Is not the song "kannodu kAnbathellAm" based (mainly) on Suddha Dhanyasi. to me, it sounds closer to SD than Aberi, though i can feel Aberi here and there (swaras??) . A tough one.

Can somebody clarify the raagaa of 'alai meethu viLaiyaadum iLandhendralE' by bhava in a recent IR album 'kaadhal kavithai'
I tunneled with three songs:
*) kaNgaL angE nenjamum angE of karNan
*) raagangaL pathinaru uruvaana varalaaRu
*) athi kaalai nilavE, sugamaanE kanavE, suga raagam naan paadavaa [lyrics could be wrong!]
Is there any relation to tehm? [Im still learning to identify raagaas. So any comment on this would help me]
Thanks in advance.

Saketh: Vasu is CORRECT. We've discussed this many times, please look at the Jeans thread and also back pages of this one. I've notated the swaras which are clearly in ABHERI, not Suddha Dhanyasi(SD). The starting swaras of :
Pa Pama Panipama Panipama Gamapa Sagasani Panipama Gamagasa Gama....are in SD, but, the song takes the whole set of Abheri swaras. As you know, the Ragas are quite close, with SD being SGMPNS SNPMGS and Abheri being SGMPNS SNDPMGRS, both JANYAS of KARAHARAPRIYA MELA.
The katpana swaras are :
Kannoadu Kaanbadhellaam Thalaivaa
Ma Ma Ga Ga Ma Ma Sa Sa
Ga Ga Sa Sa Ga Ga Ni Ni
Sa Ga Ga Sa Ma Ma Sa Ga
Ga Sa Pa Pa Sa Ga Ga Sa
Ni Ni Sa Ga Ga Sa Saa Ni
Dha Pa Ma Gaa Ga Ma Pa
Ni Sa Gaa Ri Saa Sa
A Ni Dha Paa Ma Gaa
Ri Sa Ga Ma
Kannoadu Kaanbadhellaam Thalaivaa
Pa Pa Ni Ni Saa Sa Ga
Ga Ma Ma Pa Pa Ni Ni Sa
A Sa Ni Sa Ga Ma Pa Ni
Dha Pa Ma Gaa Ma Pa Ni
Sa Ga Ri Sa Ni Sa Ma Ga
Ri Sa Ni Dha Pa Ma
Kannoadu Kaanbadhellaam Thalaivaa
Ree Ree Sa
Ni Sa Ri Ri Sa Sa Ri Ri
Ni Ni Saa Saa Ga Ri
Sa Ni Sa Ga Ri Sa Ni Dha
Pa Paa Paa Ni Dha Pa
Ma Ga Ri Sa Ni Sa Gaa
Sa Ga Ma Ga Ma Paa Ni
Dha Pa Ma Pa Ni Ma Pa Ni
Sa Ga Ri Saa Ga Ri Sa
Ni Saa Ni Dha Paa Ma
Ga Ma Pa Ma
Also, to confirm with you, I've spoken about this to Nithyashree herself(who sang the song).

I think alai meedhu viLaiyaadum iLam thendralE
sung by B'dharini in Kadhal Kavidhai is in
Sudhdha Dhanyasi, the same raga in which
kaNgaL engE of Karnan is made. There
appears to be some traces of similarity
between the starting lines of alai meedhu
and some lines in the charanam of kaNgaL engE.
Also, the way a sequence of notes is first
played in high pitch and the same ordering
repeated again in low pitch adds to the similarity.
I think alai meedhu starts as
ppSn nSnp ppnpm..
Warning:
I am a learner and so what I have said
above could be very wrong.
p.s. I think the song would have been much better
if it had been sung by someone other than B'dharini.
Also, I felt that the instruments were shadowing
the vocal too much. (Perhaps, done with intention?)

Many thanks

Hi,
is there a way to quickly identify m2 in a raga (as diff. from m1). somewhere on net, i read that its one of the earliest things the music listeneres learn to identify. what are its general characteristics ? i usu. find a raga by "guessing" no of notes and then by trial-n-error method on keyboard (which ga, ri,da, ni). if there are "general" methods of finding notes from experienced listeners that could be helpful, thanks. i do believe that there are such gen. methods. one of my friends with whom i used to play chess, plays it by saying that there are some "general moves" which you follow in certain situations. likwise in music too ?

Dhadapani:
Kalpanaswaras -lit swaras of imagination. i believe, its used to bring out the depth of raga. its one of the places where improvisation becomes a challenge. usu it doesnt have connection with the charnam in its strict sense. ie. you cant play charanam based on kalpana swaras esp on key board. cos theres usually lots of gamakams involved.
ive cassete of sopanam - a malyalam film where kjy & co sing saadhinchane in aarabhi, where he first sings swaras and then repeats charanam, here there is a correspondce, i dont know what such swaras are called btw. but its wonderful

Search for "A gentle intro to Karnatic music" by Mahadevan Ramesh on the net. It gives a good understanding of Kalpanaswarams (Part 3). In fact the whole primer gives a very good understanding of carnatic music.

Dhandapani: My advice is that you use the Melakartha as Karaharapriya and then follow the swaras, you have to map the correct SGMPNS SMDPMGRS(The Avarohanam is exactly Karaharapriya). The swaras I have detailed are the ones that were used in the song, you may have noticed, at the start and at the end. The ones at the start are the SD ones and then the swaras at the end, which are Katpana swaras - Nithya made them up herself....those are the ones I detailed. Have another go, but with the Karaharapriya notes this time......Good Luck.
Ragapriyan: Please can you give me a URL of the Nithyashree issue? If not, can you please give me some comments that are main to the article, as I have seen her live in London, and her concerts were excellent. I must admit, I'm not so hot on the songs she has done for Adithyan and Deva(from Venillave Vennilave and Chinna Raja). The Adithyan song was a 'lift' of a Hindi number and is a duet with Hariharan, while the Deva number is sounding very Anurada Sri-Ram like......

i cant comment on Ns perfo coz i didnt see it, but the author has some narrow attitudes which are worth disregarding.

Nithyashree's concert
nithyashree sang in a festival arranged to celebrate the 100th birthday of kumbakonam rajamanickam pillai who has made very good name as a accompanist in the yesteryears. He happen to be the grand father of tamil film actor thyagu.
coming to nithyasree's concert, she had violin, mirudangam, gatam, and ganjira plus a thavil (haridvaramangalam a.k. palanivel.. has played for kannodu kanbadhellam). Thavil accompanying a vocal artist is very odd.
Comments(complaints..) from kalki (reviewer=thumburu)
1. though nithya has a very high-pitch voice (thumburu says.. mathavangallAm kashta pattu pidikkara mEl sthayi-ya thAn ivangalOda keezh sadjamam..) thoughcan sound over not 1 thavil but even all the thavil players in tamilnadu put together, what would happen to the ears of the listeners???..
2. during Alapana in keeravani, in the higher pitch it seems, she didn't give gamakam but gave some mellisai kind of a touch. which thumburu feels is pakka adulteration(in his own words)
3.instead of singing more alapana and neravals she sang swaraprasthabam for almost all songs.. with tempo and with some jala-vithai which thumburu feels is not good for the music.
4. good things... she sang more tamil songs.. thavil thani was great.
