I'd have preferred keeping "Enai Ena" to a single raga, instead of traversing a bunch of them. Usually, ragamalikas in traditional carnatic sense, are composed such that each raga gets a fair share of charanams/pallavis. From my basic knowledge of carnatic, I feel that it is not a ragamalika in the strictest sense. Please pardon my ignorance if I'm wrong.
The song still sounds good, and that's what matters.
"Kannan Nee" is as carnatic as can at the most be in films. As Subbudu has said, "Cinema-la Ippadi Oru Paatta?"

s0,
You're right.
However a Ragamalika is not necessarily restricted to 'a fair share of charanams'. There are many later day Carnatic compositions with each line of the song set to a different raga. (take for instance the song popularized by Maharajapuram SanthAnam, 'SArangan marugane sAvEri bAlakanE')
Also, an artist can be really inspired while singing 'kalpana swaras' at the end of a composition, and can jump from one raga to another in quick succession, making it a ragamalika towards the end. This is also used to showcase their talent.
The Ivann song IMO has been composed in such a way. In fact I found it a pleasant surprise when the singer went from Simhendra Madhyamam to LatAngi.
Unfortunately, 'kiRukka(n)lgaL' pArthiban loves his voice so much that he recites a typical VM-vAli type poetry (sample this: 'un thodaigaLukku naduvil nAn kANAmal pOnen') without letting the 'sudden switch' in the tune sink in...
In the case of 'Enai Enna SeithAi', I would have loved if the singer had lingered on to each raga a little longer.. but, it's a 5 minute film song. So, no complaints.
I thoroughly enjoyed the surprising turns, till the end.
A comment on the album sleeve: While the producers have advertised it as Sudha's 1st foray into films I wonder why they failed to mention the coming together of violin masters Lalgudi Krishnan, Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi, V.V. Ravi & Embar S. Kannan for a single song.

Peter Pan, thanks for the clarification. I found the "interference" by Parthiban novel initially. But, after repeated hearings, I'm getting tired of it. Couldn't they have included a clean song at least in the cassette/CD?

Peter Pan,
nom. A small correction. I feel the sample poetry line given above is slightly different. Not exactly but it's something like "AdadA! thALam idum kaikkum, thattuppadum un thodaiykkum ?????, nAn sikkikondru iruppadhai kandukkondEn", meaning that he is finding himself get caught between her palm and thodai while she's giving the thALam. (????? means "in between").
Looks like he has spared us in this instance;-) Pls. correct me if I'm wrong.

Isaiosai,
Yes.. Thanks for pointing out.
It goes like this:
AdadA! tALamidum un kaikkum, thattuppadum un thodaikkum idayE nAn chikkik koNdiruppathai kaNdukoNden.
What I had written earlier was indeed giving a 'way-off' meaning ;)
Anyway, I wish the original song without interruption was also included in the album.

Peter Pan :
I would'nt be surprised if partiban meant to convey that 'way-off' meaning ' because he is known for such dialogues and now that he's promoted himself to Poetry instead if dialogues....
Anyway I love his double meaning dialogues....:))))

Peter Pan,
;-)
Thanks for the correct line. And yes, the album should have had the version without his interruptions. But looks like the MDs don't have much control over such things:-(
isaipriyan,
Not this time given Sudha's association and pure Carnatic background for the situation:) But I feel he would have made up for that during the second interlude of DhuLu pOdu dhuLu (similar to what TelF Director Raghavendra Rao does to most of his heroines during the songs;-)).

well "ivan " is a great one to hear after the diastrous and forgettable "devan".. i dont know which state of mind was IR in when he composed "devan".. he should understand that he cant to the songs like" sexy bomb.." and a la craps....
(i think after a long time ..since the 80's a movie's climax has one item song before a fight"!!!)..
well all i could say is IR need good directors to bring the best out of him .. i am happy he hasnt faded away as critised by many .. in the song "dhoolu podu dhoolu.." .. hte guitar piece at the end of the first stanza.. was simply supreb... an indication that IR is stiull alive..!!!
anywayz.. IVAN was a welcome relief..for IR fans..

After a long time i listened to some hummable song. 'Appadi Pakkaradenna' was a nice tune even though the beginning resembles the beginning of Beautiful mind movie soundtrack Kalidescope. Keep it up Raja!! Ennai Ena is wonderful. Carnatic based song. Rare these days as he is the only MD available who can score song of that quality. For others it is simply an ocean which nobody would want to jump in.
