Beethoven quote
"There ought to be but one large art warehouse in the world, to which the artist could carry his artworks and take away whatever he needed. As it is, one must be half a tradesman."
Guess IR is not even half a tradesman but his work is itself one giant art warehouse..
His Symphony, a real delight is hidden there somewhere. We need just one tradesman to find it..

velji: very interesting anecdote. Thanks! MSV pioneered such stellar orchestraiton those times itself and I also feel the same about Hindi film orchestration, other than Salil Chowdhry there was a need for sophistication in their orchestras even though some brilliant passages were seen from likes of LP, RJ etc.. But, Americans like the Hindi audience were strongly adheres to melody brought up on Cole Porter, Rodgers and that is why i see the fascination with MSV, whose tunes are indestructible, impeccalble and timeless plus MSV' original orchestration for select songs make it solid gold for a connoisseur.

Dear i_n_s:-)
Thanks for the knowledgeable feedback.
Even before LR and RJ MDs like SJ , C.Ramachandra, SD Burman stood apart in excellent melodies. But when it came to orchestration they lacked that something which our MSV excelled. O.P. Nayar inspite of the general complaint that he composed only Jazzy, highly westernised tunes, never went for highly concentrated orchestration except the ever lasting melody - the lovers' boat song in "Kashmir Ki kali" But his simple western orchestration went akin to the more realistic authectic orchestration of MSV & RM.
Though Naushad was credited with using more violin ensembles, he too was amazed at MSV's "Enge Nimmathi" song in "Puthiya Paravai" in which MSV used 66 violins for that song among the total 99 instruments used for that song.
Further if you hear keenly the backround music of "Yar antha Nilavu ..." song in Shanthi, particularly towards the final repetion of the first stanza, you will wonder whether it was Montovini's orchestra playing that piece!
The clarity and harmony of multiple violins tuned to different scales will come out so distinctly which is difficult with those poor recording facilities in those days.
Thank you once again!

A correction in the above posting.

IR is No. 1 iresepective of his Symphony released or by any awards standards given to him.
Which no one can accomplish or beat him or take his place in near future.

Dear X,
We were talking about the pioneering days (1964) when ordinarily not more than 5 violins were used !
May be IR used 100 violins in that Anjali children song.
MSV used multiple violins in emotional songs
(where it is most required) so that it will bring forth the mood and ambience. You will appreciate this if you listened to the "obligato" score for the song "Yaar andha Nilavu--yEn indha kanavu...
in the movie "SHANTHI"
Any way , Thanks for the information.

Dear musio
You should also listen to the music of Henry Mancini and Mantovini for real violin scores.
They were such wizards, that they made popular tunes like "puppet on a string " etc., into classical pieces with their violins.
Is there anyone out there who are interested in Spanish music ?

i must inform u guys,ARR have used 100+guitars for ROBOT song, which he composed 3 years ago!!i saw it in Rahman's guitarists website,he have worked with Rahman for ROBO/ROBOT using 100+ guitars, which now Shankar is trying to chaneg the md to HJ,btw,i heard Illai have used many guitars in Adi Rakamma - Thalapathi, how many btw??

Dinesh, I think u r confusing violin & guiter. IR composed Adi Rakkamma kaiye tattu .. the beginnin' with the spanish type of music, and was recorded at Bombay. I think the violinists were from Burman Orchestra.

Yes I am not only a great fan of IR and ARR but also all good composers.
If you look at this way- that good cine music as far as TN is concerned began with C.R. Subbaraman with whom MSV & RM worked - with whom
IR worked and with whom ARR worked. If you talk ill of anyone in the lineage then it is an insult to the master also.
We will do good , if talk and praise about the good works of these great masters instead of comparing them adversely. Comparison should be for the various techniques only. I hope you will agree with me.
Further as I have told in a different forum there is a computer program called "fruityloop" with which you can creat digital compositions. In orchestration if you type 100 guitars or violins it will produce the corresponding effect. Even the 'obligato' score is automatically produced in whatever instrument you want!
Hence when ARR says 100 guitars , you have to take it with a pinch of salt! But if IR said 100 guitars it for real!
I am grateful for the way this thread is developing! Please keep it up!
