Nan thedum sevvandhi poo is Hindolam, but well if it sounds like Mohanam it just means u r setting a different aadhara shatjam, Mohanam and Hindolam can be got by a Shruthi Bedham of each other....
like if u play G3 P D2 S R2 G3 and the descent G3 R2 S D2 P G3, it will just sound like
S G2 M1 D1 N2 S S N2 D1 M1 G2 S of Hindolam...
so if I say that the line
Poovo idu vaasam corresponds to
M1 M1 M1 M1.. M,,,D G,,, IN HINDOLAM....
Then Povom ini kaadal desam would be
D1 D1, D1 D2 N2 D2, D1, M1 G2 S
try it out and c if it works...

About pachai kiligal, ideally Aabheri has a D1 though the D2 has become prevalent these days, but I would say that a D1 can be ragarded as a variant, the general cinema music deviation to add to beauty, and the remaining song may be treated as Aabheri..

'ideally Abheri has a D1' - can you clarify this?

Well..to add to what Deepa says about Abheri..technically it has D1 only. Even carnatic musicians sing Abheri with D2.."Nagumomu" and "Bhajare re maanasa" for wexample. But there is an excellent version, recording of Abheri with D1, by MS Subbulakshmi, Muthuswami Dikshithar's krithi "Veenabheri.."( MSS's AIR Concerts collection) with an excellent chittaswaram, a tight rope walk since you can easily glide off into any of the other Natabhairavi offsprings.Hear that for what the original Abheri is all about. So if its a nightmare for Carnatic musicians to render it with D1 even...what about cinema MD's...?:-)
To add to the Sruthibedam... MLV used to do it beautifully sliding from Hindolam to Madhyamavathi and back and so also from/to Revathi and Sunadhavinodhini. It heightens musical pleasure..

Chandrasekar:
Gopuravasalilae female solo - i think u mean 'Naadham elundhathadi kannamma'
For others: Its raga - Is it Sriranjani?

Vaasi.. Its not solo.. KJY also sings and defly it's Sriranjani

Well Cheenu, we can perhaps agree that its predominantly Sumanesarnjani or name it as Cheenuranjani or (Chennupriya!!!):-) .. Thanks for your great effort. But look at that melody..Superb effort by MSV for the song situation and in fact adding up that M2/N3 has pushed up its musical value...
RR .."Andhamanai paarungal azgu"..it looks like
Cheenupriya..:-)!!.Confusing....well what about the invocatory song "Vaagarthaviva Sampruththou....." in Salangai Oli.(that portion alone). Both of them look similar to me..away in US i can only hum and identify..:-)Do play on ur keyboard and let know.

Well MS/Cheenu/RR/Deepa/... what about "Paadumpothu naan thenral kaatru.."? Looks like Mohanakalyani to me.

Deepa & Ravi
Thanks for your nice clarification on Abheri.
i always wonder whether abheri is a child of Natabhairavi or Karaharapriya ! now, i'm bit o.k
RR,
You said 'ARR is nowadays obsessed with Ananda bhairavi'. can you gimme few examples.
- From: Rajesh (@ 199.168.32.7)
on: Mon Aug 21 15:15:05 EDT 2000
silkfort,
1. 'Mettu podu' is sure AB.
2. 'Theendai' is set in Sri.
3. 'Anbendre mazhaiyile' - i don't think it is in AB, i see the prayogam of D2 in arohanam.

Well thinking of this Abheri stuff..what about Jeyachandran's "Manjolai Kilidano Maandano.." from Kizhakae Pogum Rayil?
- From: Rajesh (@ 199.168.32.7)
on: Mon Aug 21 16:27:21 EDT 2000
Ravi
'Manjolai killidano' looks like 'Sudha dhanyasi'.
Possible numbers from Abheri :
1. Columbus columbus from Jeans
2. Kadhalikum pennin from Kaadhalan
Experts confirm.

Maanjolai kiLi - Suddha dhanyaasi
Anbendra mazhaiyilae is Ananadha bhairavi,
though "pugazh maindhaen" uses kaakali nishaadham.

Vidh - Kaakali Nishadam is an accepted foreign note in Aanandha Bhairavi... it is used in prayogas like "Sa Ni dha Ni Sa ri sa..."" Techinically it is not spelt out in the aaro/avaro of the raga

Aabheri strictly takes only Dha2 and is a janya of Karaharapriya...(22)
Sa Ga2 Ma1 Pa Ni2 Sa
Sa Ni2 Dha2 Pa Ma1 Ga2 Ri2 Sa
Although I have seen some people distinguish between Aabheri and Dhanashree calling the later a janya of Natabhairavi, thereby including Dha1 instead of dha2...

Well IR ..I beg to differ with you:-)...Its has only D1..refer to the Veenabheri krithi of Dikshithar and MSS's rendition of it.The proof of the pudding lies in "hearing it"..:-). I have heard that Papanasam Sivan was so particular..a purists he is... that he never sang Abheri with D2!!!Deepa/MS/Cheenu/RR/.......Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

::)) ravi68... I have not heard MSS sing the Vinabheri krithi...
but I do agree with you on one issue - "The proof of pudding.."" theory ::))
some popular aabheri krithis are:
Nagumomu Galeneni
Bhajare Re Maanasa
Eppadi Paadinaro
Enu Dhanyalo
Singaara Velane Devaa...
Let me know what you think after listening to these.... Also is there a real audio file on the net for the song you are talking about?

on: Tue Aug 22 12:39:42 EDT 2000
ravi68.. you are right about dha1 in that rendition by MSS...
I still hold on to my view that Abheri should have dha2 and more so because it is a janya of karaharapriya... The 4 ragas are used interchangeably (Aabheri, Dhanaashree, karnataka Devagandhari and Bhimplas) these days and like I mentioned before some people do distinguish between Aabheri and Dhanashree and as far as I know, it is only dhanashree in that case which is believed to be a janya of Natabhairavi (which takes dha1)...
But, I do not have an explanation for dha1 usage in Vinabheri song...
Check these other Aabheri songs out...
Bhajare...

Well..IR I do concede the fact the usage of D2 is prevalent( Nagumo,Bhajare.et al) and D1 is an exception( Veenabheri alone as i hear it,it was a revelation to me when i first heard the MSS song..well she cant be wrong,it was a googly!!), but Abheri is technically referred as a janya of Natabhairavi...probably u can delve into the melakartha and its janya books and let me know..would be nice.

Well another dumb question IR..does Dhanashree have D1..for instance the SwathiTirunaal tillana, which is the only DhanaShree piece i have heard.Any more is there?

Hi Ravi and IR,
i don't know how much you guys will appreciate these examples, when you are discussing keerthanais...
though, i see a lot of Abheri songs with D2, there are some film songs in Abheri with D1,
1. Adi rakamma kayathatu from Dhalapathi
2. Guruvayoorappa from Pudhu pudhu arthangal.
- From: IR (@ 38.220.167.5)

ravi68 - Dhanashree - usually is sung with dha2 also(including the thillana)although some believe that it should take dha1

ravi68 (68?) : there are a few compositions in the Hindustani Dhanasri. Go to ICM forum (link on top) and browse old reponses in 'Song stats' thread.
Velayathavan: before you ask, no ragas called vEppEri,puzhalEri,sombEri or even kAttEri..!
