Piraye Piraye -- Sounds to me like Putham Pudhu Poo Poothadho(Dhalapathi). But the songs has come out very well.
IMO, all the songs will sound way better once we get a chance to watch the movie.

AS,
Hear it a couple of more times, your imagination will go wild... and probably you could find more things different, same feel i had. (sincere opinion, still not gr8 by IR standards, but very good with current standards)
Atleast it made me hear more than one time.

I am as much a fan of IR as I am of anyone else. I hate to post an opinion about any album from what I hear on Raaga or Musicindiaonline as the quality sucks, big time!!! But I sure made this observation...IR's music hasn't changed. Call it lack of evolution or adherence to genius or mere laziness, the fact is it just hasn't changed. With the advent of ARR and more recently HJ we have heard a whole bunch of domb machine sounds which lends a certain degree of softness and richness to songs. IR for one has always stuck to the raw sounds of a pluck guitar rather than record the same sound and make it sound like a Rudra Veena. While the former still manages to strike a chord, the latter is contemperory music.
"During times of change, its not the stongest species that survives nor is it the most intelligent. It is the species that's most adaptable to the change that reigns". The Raja ruled the roost and entralled fans. The Raja doesn't rule today but still enthralls his fans. The Raja may still rule us if he sheds his laziness and to an extent his onus arrogance and learns the rules of the game.

Sabesan,
Also IR taking 20 days for BGM. That means we can expect good BGM.
One more thing is, when IR sees the finished movie, he decides to put effort if the director did a good work. This happened in Ramanaa also. Initially he thought it will be one more Vijayakanth Movie and gave mostly substandard songs.(Except Vaanaville, venilavin). But after seeing the movie, he expressed Muruga doss, it has come very well. You explained me initially, only I didn't understand. I want to give grand BGM for this. With this he requested to Oscar Ravichandran about Hiring Hungary Orchestra for BGM. Looks like Oscar denied it and hence problem between IR and Oscar.
Same thing could have happened for this movie also. TB approach is good in getting good songs from IR. Finish the rest of the movie and ask for the situations where songs fit in. Otherwise, IR probably doubts that his effort will not portrayed properly by the director.

Yeswanth,
I don't know whether it is laziness or arrogance. Now we get a information, that IR asked for 20 days for BGM. This means he takes effort so that director's effort is not wasted. This in my opinion is not a sign of laziness.
I think he do not trust that directors will portray his hardwork properly. To an extent he is done with film Music.
Arrogance. I don't know. May be he is arrogant. At the same time, I keep the option open, that it could be that he talks his mind. There is a very thin line between talking your mind and arrogance.
Also some of his qualities like loyalty(he is helping Ramarajan and Rajkiran in tough times) and giving importance new directors(TB, Bala created by him) leads me to belive that it could more towards talking his mind.

Yeswanth,
Also he has absolute belief that natural instruments will win over synth. kind of stuff. Once he told that synth. equivalent of flute misses some key frequencies, from actual one, which are required to touch one's heart.
But I also agree that may be he should choose only projects like PM, but give a grand music to it.

Yeshwanth,
Actually,I am happy that IR sticks to his OWN ways of recording songs.Even though I enjoy ARR and recently HJ's songs also,I would always take IR's music to anyone else's if it is like PithaMagan.

Guys,
A small digression:
If ARR's work is carefully looked at, he always brings in new sound. He keeps the listener intact for first few hearings by raising curiosity with new sounds. After the first few hearings the underlying tune takes over(which is also good, but on most cases is improvisation over existing proved tune).
Probably trend has changed for this expectation. IR is one always used to give what exactly is required. No excess decoration, even it could hit the song.

Kiran,
I agree with you that pithamagan songs are not of raaja's class.
I strongly feel that raaja has "ALTERED" his choice of instruments. I was just listening to one telugu song "randi..randi...." and one other song equivalent for "punjai undu nannjai undu" from rudraveena('unnal mudiyum thambi' telugu version). What a piece! Its not a great song as such. Its kind of katha-kalakshepam. But the instrument selection and the tune was absolutely a classical work.
Gone are those days!
If I have to rate the excellent album in the recent days by raaja, I would rate "bharathi" and "hey raam".
And one more humble request. PLEASE..PLEASE...PLEASE dont compare Ilayaraja with any othe music director. My Blood Pressure goes and hits beyond limits when I hear comparing Boys and Pithamagan.
To me, Boys is absolute piece of trash. Hear it once and TRASH it!
Raaja's class is different!

Wow sounds like someone has got problems and is a little immature. I highly doubt illaiyaraja has problems when people compare and contrast his music with others or any md at that.
To me,Pithmagan hear it once and you want to burn it then spit on it grind it up and throw it away.
second hearing just trash it.
third hearing i feel like doing that to every song in the album xcept piraiye piraiye and elangathu.

I belong to IR generation. I mean all my prime school days and college days were during late eighties when IR was in peak.
I feel that my passion towards IR's music cannot be changed since I grew with that.
At the same time, I respect the younger generation's pasion towards ARR's music, since they are growing with ARR's music as their prime MD.
So, no comparisons here.
However I do want to express my feelings when I heared Pithamagan.
In simple sentence, I won't believe EVEN if IR says that he has given his 100% dedication towards this album.
Such a pain to ears.
Cannot believe that this comes from a MD who gave Mouna Raagam, Payanangal Mudivathillai, anjali, naayagan etc.
May be IR should seriously consider quitting from TFM, if he cannot give his 100% of his dedication.
He is just not an another ordinary MD so that people can listen to his album without any expectation. We expect a lot more and we listen to his album with lot of excitements.
Previously his albums will stick to our hearts the moment we hear them first.Nowadays, it only turns your expectations in to bitterness.
IR is consistently failing his fans. Or atleast, I would say that he is consistently failing my expectations.
MSV, even during his last PEAK days, gave a huge hit in NINAITHAALEY INIKKUM.
But IR simply doesn't want to do that. Honestly, I am not going to have any expection about his Thiruvasagam project.

Summa Pulambatheengappa!
If you don't like it, then don't buy it!
If you got it by some means, then don't listen to it!
If you've already listened unavoidably, then don't talk about it!
If you have already talked about it, then don't do it repeatedly!
Because you're going to get nothing out of it. Remember your likes and dislikes are hardly detrimental for movie's success.
