Many thanks for the new additions Neel D. I look forward to listening to them all through the week. Will post a few comments whenever something amazes me...
Keep up all the good work. And thank you very much for making the time for this project. It is absolutely selfless of you!

Naaz, I agree wholeheartedly with you- tfm is indeed passing thru a pathetic phase- but hope it will soon pass -meanwhile we can still seek solace with VJ's 'Konjum thamizhosai'- the songs that she has given us, and hope that the time will come when she keeps her word-'Naalai mudhal unaakagave naan paduven'--!!
NeelD- great going! BTW, though the HMV tape says 'padamedukkira' is from Kalyanamaam kalyanam, I think its from Palabishegam. Thanks a lot.

Naaz/Saravanan, a word or two of appreciation is the greatest reward one can ever receive. Thank you.
Saravanan, You must be right. "padamedukkiRa" better fits in Paalaabishegam with rest of its folksy tunes. You have the same white cassette with thagara parts that rattle:-)

An important announcement

Questions are invited from the fans. Please email your questions to me before July 12th. Including your first name and city will be apprecited but is optional. More details later.
When you are thinking about the question, enjoy listening to the Hori songs with Birju Maharaj under Hindi section.

Neel,
I heard the latest additions. Just a few quick remarks: Kandaen Engum has a few jarring transfer moments halfway through and closer to the end. The Hori songs are fine, although there is some sort of muted/muffled aspect to the background track. The singers sound fine.
Thanks for Aalamarathukkili...one of the real inspired numbers by SG? (if I remember right.)
Await new additions!

Neel D
Thanks for the future interview with VJ. Can you provide the email address to which the questions should be sent?
Also, is this interview going to focus only on questions from TFM? Is there any room for questions about TeFM(telugu film music)?

I am awaiting Kaumudi's review now!
I feel honored by Naaz?s statement. Sorry for delaying my review. I just finished listening to all the songs of Gaanamanjari. I felt very pleased and satisfied at the end of my listening. What a rendition! VJ has amazing clarity, calmness and uniqueness in her voice that makes music lovers want to listen to her more. I should thank Neel D for providing us all this wonderful opportunity to do so.
Coming to the songs themselves, my favorite songs of the album are vaaDae vaenkaTaadri and indiraa naamamindariki (this is misspelt in the webpage, should be nAmamu not nAnamu, Neel can you please correct it). A very nice sitar prelude to the indira song transports the listener to the mood of the song. I think both these songs are somewhat tough to render, especially the indira song. The rendition of this song, IMO, can produce apaswaras if the singer is not able to handle it properly. VJ has excelled in this song and so soulfully in that.
VJ?s pronunciation of telugu and her diction is impeccable and is instructional to all those non-telugu singers who wish to sound native. Even in fast-paced passages in the raagamaalika sivakadha, indira nAmamu she is so native. I would like to give one example here to show how careful she is in her enunciation: the word kaLyaaNam is pronounced in telugu with a periya La unlike in thamizh where it is pronounced with a chinna la. Many singers (including KSC and very rarely, SPB, SJ, PS) pronounce it wrong in telugu, but VJ has done a commendable job of not mixing up in the song himagiri nandana.
However, to be fair I have noticed two (just !!!) mistakes (??) in the whole album ? a) In manavi chaeyaku, she says himagireesuni instead of himagireeSuni and b) In chakkani thalliki, the pronunciation of ?ch? in the line ?chakkera moaviki chaangu bhaLaa? is wrong (I hope I don?t sound too picky). But these are nothing compared to the unbearable blunders that non-native singers are making these days.
nAmaenu pulakinche, Saivam and dhavaLaachalamae are nice smooth songs which flow through her voice effortlessly. Sivakadha is a raagamaalika describing the dakshayagnam scene.
This is not really a review, but just a few of my thoughts. I sincerely hope she is opted for, atleast once in a while, in the film music scene by today?s music directors for they (the music directors) will be honored if they do so!

Kaumudi - Thanks for the brief "impressionistic" piece. I also feel that Vaade Venkatadri is an amazing composition and also a flawless recital. However, as my grasp of Telugu is rudimentary is good to hear from a "native" speaker about VJs dedication to a language not her own. Slight slips and syllable shortening/lengthening during singing are commonplace, and even the most celebrated singers have their awkward moments. Thanks for pointing out the two specific examples.
The sivakatha ragamalika is another astounding piece along the lines of Aanathi Neeara (only in a formal compositional sense) - the transitions in different scales emerging and melding seamlessly.
Great to have an bonafide Telugu reviewer here - Thanks Kaumudi!

Kaumudi, thanks for the review (and pointing out the typo). It is indeed a great album. Another example to prove that VJ strives for perfection in every aspect of song rendition. A far cry these days. VJ is a rarity. Only the MDs don't realize it. She is the only singer we have now who can now clean up TFM. Hope she returns.

Neel D -
Many thanks for uploading the new "Sawan" album. I will take a page from Kaumudi's book and try and do a brief "quicktakes" on the songs after I have had a listen. I hope there are many here who are accessing your site...For your sake, and your efforts, I wish visitors would post their comments and compliments. You've give the site a great deal of time - and have brought many many moments of joy to a great many people - especially the admirers of Vani Jairam's music. On behalf of all those unvoiced comments: "Shabaash" Neel!!

My thoughts on "Yeh Sawan kyon Barse". A good album with some light melodies composed for lyrics associated with the monsoon rain. This is very different from the Gaanamanjari album in telugu.
An outstanding song IMO (and my favorite) in this album is "Lagi aad dil ki bujhaane na aayae" - a slow, heartrending melody rendered beautifully by VJ. To reinforce my point about her care in pronunciation, notice how well she pronounces the urdu words "gham" and "nagmae". The song boasts of really good lyrics. I heard this song three times continuously and haven't gotten enough of it yet.
"Ghanan ghanan barse badraa" starts with a group of sitars playing fast-paced notes which then settles down to give way to VJ to sing this lively melody. This song gives a strange feeling of "baadal" and "baarish" with its nice flute and sitar interludes. My second favorite in the album.
"Kahe ko churayae", "Rim jhim si barkha" and "Sawan barasthe huay" are nice songs too with good lyrics. VJ, as always, done her job flawlessly and with good command over the language.
One important thing that I forgot to mention previously was the song quality. Neel has done a perfect job in uploading good quality songs with good quality sound! Thanks Neel.
