i think "copying" is there for a long time in tamil film history. Here we discuss the tamil songs copied from others.

vaNNam konda veNNilavEy from kabHi kHudh pE kabHi haalaath pE rOnaa aayaa.
kurukku chiruththavaLey from saavan kaa maheenaa pavan karEy sOru..
ilamaiyenum (I am guessing) Is it 'mei kahin kavi na banjaoon, thEraa pyaar me ai kavithaa'? (which has a somewhat similar tune but a different sandham (and a very very ordinary BGM music compared to iLamai)

vaNNam koNda veNNilavE has a striking resemblance to "JagadhOdhaaraNaa adisheedhaLashODhaa".

rajaG,
u are bingo on kurukku siruthavale. i had a strong feeling that i had listened to the opening lines somewhere before. Nowadays a lot of ARRs songs give u the feeling that u have already listened to them before.

Vijay: I cannot take credit for discovering the similarity. I believe it was mentioned by SPB in the Bay area concert recently.

I feel the saranam of the vannan konda vennilavi
sounds close to the saranam of 'annan oru koil enral'.

Looks like,
MDs like MSV, Raja and ARR take inspirations
rather than copy the notes! I think they
perceive melodies in a different level and
so they take the skeleton and give a different
form rather than tracing the contour!
The skeleton could be the harmonic framework,
or the melodic framework (raagam) and the
feel (thalam) or even a specific way of using
an instrument!
Here is my list of possible inspirations:
MSV:
Irandu kaigal naanganal : Yae dostagi
Raja
Kadal kasakkudhayya: Manmadha leelaiyai
vendrar undo
Vaanuyardha solaiyilae : Nenjam marappadhillai
(especially the intro)
ARR
Kannodu kaanbadellam : singara velanae deva
En veetu thottathil : Nadavindhu kaladee
Maybe these are far fetched. But I am trying
to see if others can see a similarity and
explain why...

singara vElanE -> KaNNOdu -> a bit far fetched RJ :-) all the others are definitely acceptable for me.

The themes that are similar are:
Thavil Mridhangam based dance songs,
both in Abheri, with female lead,
With extended Swara-singing interludes!

ARR : kuchi kuchi raakamma - senthamizh thenmozhiyal(i have mentioned this before)
the line "pombmalaiku then pidikkum" is exactly similar to 'parukida thalai kunivaal' from the original

hi,
guys don't u think telephone manipol getting inspired from ace of base is a bit far-fetched ...?? looks like absolute coincidence to me .. also, today when I was in a local bus here in iowa city, heard the tune of deva's song in "avvai shanmughi" ... that last song where kamal and meena sing about separation and all that pain .... deva is a total god in serendipity ... :)))

and 'raaman kathai kelungal' from chipikkul muthu seems to have been self-inspired from chinna kannan azhaikiraan. the notes are similiar for the opening line atleast.

Line-To-Line..
aruvA manayil narukkariyE (azhaga rakshasi) = Thalayai kuniyum thAmarayE..

haris, well, 'narukarriye' is sloightly different from thamaraye. plus since this is not the beginning of the pallavi u can just call it as a case of coincidence w.r.t. similiarity in swaras. Our MDs just need the first line of the pallavi and then they can beautifully develop that into a song. In 99% of the songs discussed in this thread, the similiarity ends with the first one or two lines of the pallavi. adhukappuram yaar venumnaalum adha tunea pottukkalaam. But how much they improvise and creat further using that base is what differs from one MD to another. a good case of developing the base tune is that of IR's endha poovilum vaasam undu. just listen to the original in the copied songsl list. IR has almost copied the whole pallavi and keeps repeats the first few notes of the prelude albeit in a different scale in the 2nd interlude. he also uses the flute beautifully in the first interlude that lends a rustic folk-like touch to the song.

Regarding Tamil to Hindi copies:
Ek do theen (Tezaab) was lifted from Annen annen sippay annen (Kozhi koovudhu).
Anand Milind lifted several (in fact innumerable!) # of songs of IR and kept saying they composed it originally.

I was watching Tirunelveli yesterday and a piece of BGM was sooo familiar-repeated again and again-it was the first line of kaadhal kadidham theetave from jodi-i , as a HCIRF,cannot imagine that IR ,of all persons would flick a ARR tune for a BGM piece-another eg of musical coincidence.

Digression
Isn't playing songs over internet by so many .coms and amateurs against copyright law?
Aren't they including newtfmpage violating the law?
Please throw some light.

curious_copier,
yep, all the sites running the show with songs in their site thinking as if they own the company is definetely illegal.infact i think this might affect the sales to certain extent.
luckily newtfmpage isn't hosting any songs by themselves, but recently they also started by bringing rare songs collection.
like the western audio companies which came upon mp3 stuff etc....i think soon the indian audio companies will deal with this problem as the internet awareness in india is skyrocketing.already many audio companies in india like pyramid, AVM , sangeetha etc have been sold to bigger giants cos they couldn't cope up with the piracy and the loss in the market. I don't think the audio companies will take this lightly as we have taken away their living.
audio companies can deal with this in several ways one among them is giving the info to IRS...they will calculate the income these sites made on a day today basis and finish off these sites I guess.
anyway erukkum varai enjoy pannuvom endra policy pola erukku sites like raaga.com.

hairs, vijay and others :
Raga similarity doesnt consitute a copy. two or more songs set in same raga (talayai kuniyum thaamaraiye and azhagaana rakshashiyae) are bound to have similarities. This point has been discussed loud and clear several times. Theres no point in raking it up again, again & again. Before posting your accusations/suscipions on copies, please go through the archives!!!

Listen to the above track. (Suttufied from a egroup for ARR) I would like to know whether any body heard this b4. This was supposed to have been played by a russian orchestra in a dd program last year. Can somebody give me an insight on this?

its close to a copy, perhaps as close as u can get;)) but sill doesnt qualify exactly as a copy. But ARR has been definitely inspired by this piece. he has tinkered with the notes a little bit here and there, but yes u can definitely add this to his list of inspirations.

if "entha poovilum vaasam uNdu" is branded a copy, this is on par with it...

endha poovilum vaasam undu is A note-by-note copy
whereas this is not. MS, u should know better;))
this is almost a copy and thats how u can describe it. IR just did a ctrl C and V in endha poovilum whereas ARR has modified the original a little bit here

but for me, that song really sounds IRish...
