Why are most of the songs by Malaysian Tamil bands & artistes are all sounding the same ???
I mean most of the songs are based on the same simple drum beat, screeching guitar sound, fast-rap like shouting vocals, etc which is the trend started by those "saavi" band and their song
"sister's daughter". They somehow call this style as "samba rock".
Any "ulloor" (local) Tamil song you listen to, whether in radio stations, TV, audio shop, functions, etc ... you will listen to this type of song only ... Why do the bands & artistes just copy or follow this style ? Are there no other styles in music or they don't know any other style that exist in music ?? Are there no creativity among Tamil musicians in Malaysia ??
Most of the Malaysian Tamil songs are in this style that one music director from Tamil cinema thought this is Malaysian Tamil music and used it in his song "O podu". Now many Tamil cinema songs are using this "O podu" style ...
Just because that "sister's daugther" song somehow became famous among Malaysian Tamil youth, the other bands, artistes, recording labels, producers, etc are just churning out songs only based on this "kaatthaan" sound ... when you listen to the sound, it reminds you of uncivilized jungle inhabitants dancing wildly & performing their rituals ...
Also the Malaysian Tamil bands & artistes ... they all look like drug addicts, criminals, cult worshippers, gangsters, etc. Long untidy hair, weird moustache-beard styles, ear-rings nose rings, black attire, angry look like want to whack somebody, etc ...
Even their band names & album names sound crazy & gothic ... "sudugadu", "devil ana", "peyi", etc. All they know is heavy metal, rock, rap, hip-hop ... only the youngsters who are same "case" like these bands & artistes listen & support them ... nobody else listens or support this so called "musicians" ... bcoz there is really nothing to enjoy in these songs ... just unpleasing sound ...
if want to criticize more, can keep on going but only wasting time ... what happened to Tamil music in Malaysia ? Is this Tamil music in Malaysia ? Nobody can do real good music among Tamil people in Malaysia ?
"...vaalga Malaysia Tamil isai ..."

Some comments about Vanavil Padal Thiren Poti 2004.Please get the backing music for the singers right. The same thing happend last time some of the singers could not do their best because of the music. The music is being programed by soneone who has less knowledge in music and some the songs are remixed with the original music which sometimes does not sound good. The other thing is when a singer comes for rehearsal you can know if the key is too high for him or her to sing.if so then bring down the key so that it is comfortable the singer. If it's programed music you can do it with a key changer.I think vanavil should get a live band to acompany the singers. If you still want to use programed music than get it from someone who can do good music programing. One more thing when you invite guest musician to perform make sure they know what they are doing ,the nadeswaram group was the worst i have ever heard. They can't even play in the same pitch. It was just out.Vanavil please be professional.

I would like to re-emphasis what KESAVAN precisely and shortly outlined (although in vulgar expression). But I'll rather put it in a lighter manner since I'm fan of Mannin Mainthargal as well.
There is few factor to be considered before badmouthing our Malaysia artist talent.
1) Malaysian Indian social b/ground
Q1: What is the population of Indian in Malaysia?
A1: +/- 1.2 million (male=0.6m & female 0.66m)
Breakdown : Only male indian listen more to local song whereas the female still prefer a sort of flowery and touching duet song from Tamil movie. Among the male only young are hardcore or moderate listener (and only half or quarter of young female Indian listen). Now, Q2: How many Indian really willing to listen? A2: considering at maximum rate, 50%young male from 0.6million + 25% young female from 0.6million = 300000 + 150000 = 450000. Q3: How many from this 450000 really buying original cd or cassette? A3: Maybe only half or 100000. Only the artist who is end up now opening saloon know. Piracy greatly ruin their carrer. Their talent being raped.
The point is, incomes play vital role in sustainability of artist in market and as a booster for them to produce a better, more competitive and new concept of music. If members of Kashmir Stone and Chakra Sonic were born in US, probably they'd become millionaire right now.
2) Typical Malaysian Indian concept of music
For decades Malaysian Indian have been swimming in the river of India Tamil music industries. That's why we can see some of our elder generations will critize "what kind of nonsense song you're listening", "switch off the radio now"
and etc. Of course it's not easy to change elder generation craving. Our music industries began to flourish in the beginning of 90's. Still virginlah makkal! A baby must learn to crawl, then stand stably, then walk and then only it can run. Even then the baby still need companion to assist. So the Malaysia Indian artist. Don't hamper their aspiration. I'll proudly utter, Malaysian Indian is pioneer in producing modern music which has comply to western music, despite some traditional bond type music. We create our own album. We are pioneering hip-hop, rap, jaz, hard rock, metal, new age and etc. in Tamilan world. It can be said that in western, virtually, there is no more duet like song in market for time being, whereby hero and heroine running up and down, kissing and hugging like unmodernized people. Tamil film industries is only for Tamil community only. Only one or two, luckily reaching the heart of non-Tamils. In order to introduce to the world what else Tamilans are capable of, we need people like 'Malaysian Mannin Mainthargal'. I'm not insisting to extinguish the current practice of Tamil music/film, instead give a try for a better, newer and wider scope of entertainment arena. Why not? Some changes in our culture.
3) Freedom : nobody hindering anyone from producing 'decent' type of music. Perhaps Mr. Ekam Satyam sickened of listening to such music. If that is the case, either you quit listening or try to create some 'decent' music since you're visiously against our Malaysian effort. Don't be NATO (no action talk only) or professing double standard practice. Either you swallow or spit. There are many Indian 'crab' or elite wannabe will critise someone who is listening to such song as 'estate people'. Nah, my foot!!!
As everybody know music is borderless. It has no limit. Millions of instrument can be utilise to produce sound. It only a matter of how mankind use their imagination and artistic sensitivity in compounding intruments and voice to produce sound/song.
There is alot of thing to be done to enhance the quality of music and acceptance of our music in international arena. IF THERE IS WILL THERE MUST BE A WAY.

You should try to listen to your Bhangra songs... the probably most famous Bhangra song "Mundian To Bach Ke" is a remake of a remake of a remake...
Khoothadi:
"All they know is ROCK & HEAVY METAL since these types of musics dont need much talent and no need to learn music from chilhood. These is cheap type of music found everywhere in the world and nothing wrong in performing it in malaysia by our boys. The music itself is identified with long hair, messy dressing, earrings etc. in western world. So, if indian need to play sitar seating, so whoever in the world want to play sitar MUST SIT DOWN! Why cannot stand? Because that is the way the instrument and music is presented through the sitar, isnt it? So, whats wrong with our fellas playing rock music the way it should be performed?"
tigerboy:
That's true, just because these songs are too complicated to these people they can't appreciate this style or even stop their stupid comments about them...
I heard two Malaysian Thamizh albums recently... Really great... (Go to Tamilstate.com for malaysian Thamizh mp3 songs)... If Indian Tamils can accept all these Udit Narayans and Sukwinder Singhs sing in "Hindian Tamil" then there is no wrong in accepting any kind of Malaysian Thamizh Thamizh songs.
Good Luck Malaysian Thamizhs (by an Eelam Thamizhan living in Denmark)
