MS,
that pA is from kuRunthokai of the cangka kaalam. it is a beautiful poem (IMO). again imo, it's a sorry state of affairs that such openness doesn't exist in out society. a good discussion of it can be found in http://forumhub.com/tlit/6571.16935.01.33.23.html . VM could be (and should be) lauded for bringing such old pAkkaL to the public.
DM (dia-muNdu as thinamalar calls him :-) ) has more "potent" (pun intended) things to his credit. in the song naRumugaiyE naRumugaiyE, there is a line that makes me puke every time i listen to that song. the line is "orE muRai thINdal seydhAi uyirk kodi pUththadhenna". this is the height of vulgarity and chauvinism that could be reached only by him.

Thanks for the response. Anaal...., sorry I differ with you in the line you have quoted. For me it was the best ( :-( and :-) ). IMO, it is a subtle expression 9though easily understandable). I admire subtlety and abhor openness when it comes to expression of..-- Hence.. :-)

MS,
i don't want to discuss more about this line. my comment was not about the subtlety (actually the lack of it), but the blatant male chauvinism (and the resultant vulgarity) in that line. chauvinism expressed subtlely or anyother way is to me to be abhorred.
(as a digression a similar thing happens in the beautiful song kARRu veLiyidai kaNNammA. there GR make the female sing line "thuyar pOyina pOyina thunbangaL ninnai ponnenak koNda pozhudhilE" whereas bhArathi sings that song and that line to his kaNNammA. these all "subtlely" show the way we (mis)treat the half of us!)

All:
For Godsake let us not compare Vairamuthu with Kannadasan. Vairamuthu can never ever come even close to Kannadasan. Of course, Vairamuthu has given really good lyrics in his early days, even then, it is no good to compare him with Kannadasan. We all have to accept that Vairamuthu is very notorious using or jumbling up his own words giving similar meanings from his earlier lyrics. Sometimes (most of the time), his songs delivers nothing, which is almost like 'paethal', lately I heard 'Oru thuli, sila thuli, pala thuli', for a while I thought, Vairamuthu has gone nuts composing any gibberish things which comes to his mind.
Kannadasan is like ocean and Vairamuthu is like a pond. It would be more ideal to have a comparison between Kannadasan and Vaali, since both had been (so-called) rivalaries those days. (In fact Kannadasan has good regards for Vaali and Vaali had high respect and reverence for Kannadasan).

Comparing VM with Kannadasan is like comparing ARR with IR. IR & Kannadasam in TFM can never and ever be compared with anyone.

these titles have become insignificant entities...

I believe the sentiment was best expressed in "arasu bathilkal" in Ananda Vikatan some time ago when someone asked what the difference was between the Vairamuthu who wrote "idhu oru ponmaalai pozhuthu" and the Vairamuthu of today, the succinct answer was, "sila aayiranggal" - the implication being that what motivated him in the past to produce some excellent poetry was true inspiration which has given way to the need to produce on demand, in volume and for pure commercial considerations.

Dear guys,
the topic is good. but the example from the film "Amarkkalam" is rubbish. the credit for that song neither goes to vairamuthu or to the music director. it is a concept copied from a hindi album of "shankar mahadevan". the tune is a xerox copy and the lyrics almost typical translation. vairamuthu is having talent. but he is not getting chance to show it. he is compelled to "mettukku paattu" concept. if we see in "nizhalgal", "alaigal oivathillai" the lyrics were wonderful. but atlast we should not compare him with "KANNADAASAN".

1. Sangaman
Kannil Verthaan. - Mudhal Murai...
Jothi Epadi Jothi ai Erikkum - Marghazhi Thingal..
Annidha Mothiram (Ring) Vallaiyelagave Thurunbena Ellaithean...Antha Mothiram Odiyanamai Aagumun Anbe Azhaithaen. - Sowkiyamaa

In Sowkiyama -- VM goes with a line
"Enkatril Swaasam Illai".
Could anyone explain me what he means by that. I have asked many of my friends nobody has an answer for it.

VM is great?????. He is certainly not as great as he projects himself with self acclaimed titles like "kaviarasu", "kavip paerarasu".
I did not complain about music but the lyrics. I hope you get it.

I heard these two lines from two different songs by two different lyricists :
1. Kannukkul Mullai Vaithu yaar theithadhu
2. Ambu vizhi enru aen sonnan adhu apivadhinaldhano.
Anyone cares to guess who the two are? IMHO the underlying meaning is the same, but look at the choice of metaphors!

I think VM is using swAsam to mean life.
So en kAtril swAsam illai.. means 'there
is no life in my breath', I think. adhu sari,
moondru muRai andha variyai pAdivittu adhaRkkup
pin oru vari varudhE adhu enna sollunga. I have
listened to that song so many times but I have
not been able to decipher what Nithyashree sings
in that line. It comes so fast and is totally
clouded by the music! ARR has made a mess of the
song at this line.. unless he purposely did it
to shield some nonsense lyrics!

1. 'Kannukkul Mullai Vaithu yaar theithadhu'
is by kavippErarasu Vairamuthu (Movie: Raaja vErvai, song: andhimazhai pozhigiradhu)
2. 'Ambu vizhi enru aen sonnan adhu apivadhinaldhano'
is by kaviyarasu kannadhaasan (Movie: nizhal nijamaagiradhu, song: kamban Emaandhaan)
IMO, the meanings of these two song (lines) are different. The first song explains what kind of uncomfortable state the hero is in.
'dhEgam yaavum theeyin dhaagam
...
kannukkul mullai vaithu yaar thaithadhu
thanneeril nirkumbodhe verkindradhu' etc...
Whereas, the second song describes the qualities (??!:) of females.
