Amazon.co.uk Review
The Andrew Lloyd Webber-produced musical Bombay Dreams arrived on the London stage in June 2002. It's a hard task to retain the exciting authenticity of the Bollywood musical while coating it in a layer of West End musical, without dissipating the whole experience. Considering that Bombay Dreams composer AR Rahmen is one of such a phenomenon in India, it is odd that much of this music comes across as cheap imitation. One has the feeling that he was trying (or was he pushed?) to squeeze the music into a box, and only now and then does it burst forth from its restrictions. "Chaiyya Chaiyya" is one of the best pieces, in Hindi and with added metal guitar it has real oomph, but comes from the much-loved Bollywood film, Dil Se, and is a massively popular song in India.
"Closer Than Ever" also has something, with interesting chord progression and some soaring lines for the singers to get their teeth into--the only number to do this. There are beautiful moments, but with no evident characterisation and appallingly banal lyrics by Don Black, it doesn't grab. The show itself makes up for the lack of musical originality with some stunning choreography, but ultimately leaves one wishing that they had just brought over a real Bollywood musical. --Antonia Couling

and sokku bhai..u think u are really smart by picking up some negative reviews from some obsucre sites and posting it here....the revewer in amazon.co.uk says shakalaka baby is cheap..kazhudaikku theriyuma karpoora vasanai...Seriously tell me wasn't that one of the biggest songs in tamil cinema?? when mudalvan was released every small child in tamilnadu was singing that in its lips. Anyway the point is BD is a huge hit Financially and Otherwise and they are brining it to the U.S and my god if it becomes a hit in the U.S ..then i think all the vayetherichhal parties of newtfmpage will say becoming a hit in the u.s is no big deal ..
Pluck yew...

Thogai iLa mayil
aadi varughudhu
vaanil mazhai varumo
thogai ivaL vizhi
noru kavidhaigaL
naaLum malarndhidumo
This is a SUPERB song by IR from payangal mudivadhillai.
Now move over to the song
Irubadhu kodi nilavugal koodi penmai aanadho
En edhirE vandhu punnagai seyya kann koosudho
The latter is a wonderful song in the late nineties composed by S.A. Rajkumar. However, I think that parts at the beginning of the first and second paragraphs of the second mentioned song remind of the first mentioned IR song.

I believe the Dillagi title song reminds of the oldie
Nallavan enakku naanE nallavan
sollilum seyalilum vallavan
The first one is composed by SEL.

A correction. It appears that Dillagi was composed by Jatin Lalit and not SEL.

Sokku (@ 217.44.93.33) - Again, if you read the post, it says that the show (BD) was a success, EVEN THOUGH the reviews were bad! Yopu have picked two very old reviews. I was careful to give new reviews - notice dates! Also I mentiuoned that the show was a success, even though the Theatre industry is in the same slump as the rest of the world!
http://www.crazedsquirrelland.com is a spoof site, with all kind of crazy and tongue in cheek stuff! I don't think you can go by that. To top that, the language used on that review was full of expletives - not conducive to a review at all!
QUOTE:
"Yeah. So for the theatre goers amongst you, I guess you'd probably not enjoy reading this rant-against-stupid-Moron-aka-Andrew Lloyd Webber-disguised-as-informative-unbiased-review, huh? But then again, who gives a f*** about the opinions of THEATRE GOERS?"
The *'s were not blocked on that!
As a UK resident, surely you know how BD blew up and why it's the sole most successful Indian musical!

The same BBC had the above review, which was the opening one -
"Ovation for 'brilliant' Bombay Dreams"
Don't forget.....
Anyways, the who topic was about someone suggesting that BD was a failure and that it was un-profitable!
Regardless of the reviews, that's what has happened. Read my post carefully, go look in the links all the dis-believers and then come back with something useful!
SORRY FOR THE DIGRESSION ON THIS THREAD!

And Ramesh:
I have put the latest links for reviews, with the exception of a few!
I stated (if you read carefully) that the reviews were terrible and that the show conquered all!
You probably went to the Housten show and saw what a hit it was.
I am just making some un-biased points - not putting anyone down, however, I would hope that poeople have the ability to read and understand English when I post on here! This isn't coming through from you guys!

av,
I feel a strong resemblence in starting string instrument of Nahi Samne and tune of Dil Vil Pyar Vyar.
I am not saying entire song is a copy of something. What all I am saying, ARR always take a reference in existing hit and build upon it with his own imagination. However, it is my observation and opinion.

Hello An. U r the one who is narrow minded. it can be easily illustrated by a simple example.
The reason u r giving to watch Shows like bombay dreams or other north indian shows "Support Asians". If u r realy broad minded u must give support all artists without differenciating them by race. We tamils are not like u. We watch tamil shows because we like it. We like tamil shows naturally we are tamils :). If we "like" we will go other wise we wont. that is not narrow minded. And no north indians will come to tamil shows. From their point of view only hindi can produce good music or movies or whatever in india.
And hey, even if bombay dreams is successful u cant claim its arr's success. Its Andrew Lloyd Webber's success. Its the ticket sales for the show (stage play, drama whatever) over 6 months is 10 million. Its not the arr's musical album's sale. no one in uk realy cares abt arr's bombay dreams musical album (except u and ur north indian friends). Can u give is information abt ARR's bombay dreams musical album sales figures pls.. So as u and other arr's fans claim, he is not successful in western countries.
forgot to tell abt ur other claim. Arr's world tour is successful?? so as other md's world tour. VD's canadian tour is successful, deva's tours, baradwaj's tour even silk sumitha's tours also big success u see. u noe what Vinuchakaravarthi's australian tour also a big success without any other movie stars. who ever it is, a movie star's or music md's foreign tour will be a definite success. Its not applicable only to arr.
Just curious can u give us links abt ARR's bombay dreams MUSICAL album's success, sales figures etc plsssss..

Bombay Dreams is put together with Indian popular stuff for growing rich Indian population world wide. simple, plain and simple. ALW is a businessman, a socialite and seeks new ideas for his own creative purposes. Rahman was just a means. what is the big deal about Bombay Dreams being some big deal? hardly anyone outside the noisy Indian crowd knows anythiing about it. so cool it folks. don't frick up crap ;--) how's that?

I give up! U ppl R incorrigble! Dinesh, I think I gave you enough links, had you actually clicked on them.
I am not NORTH INDIAN - I am a Tamil, like yourself! I watch both Tamil and Hindi stuff, as an Aasian and I am certainly proud to be Tamil!
Ur jealousy of ARR is baseless and there's no point in arguing with you. I have written enough and you have just not read carefully.
Bomaby Dreams is AR Rahamn's Bombay Dreams - Not Anderw Lloyd Webber's Bombay Dreams.
Why do you have ARR anyway? What have you got against him?
As for overseas shows, most shows are failures, certainly, all the recent Tamil shows have been and the organisers are not making any money! Deva's show in Wembley Arena had 100 ppl only! Don't forget that! It by no means compares with the 15-20 Thousand filled stadiums for ARR's shows over the world!
naansense (@ 65.176.169.86) - Ask anyone in Central London - they will have heard about Bombay Dreams! U don't live in London and the US market doesn't tend to embrace other cultures well - Even Craig David was not a success in America!

Vj - No, the Tall Beat of passion has a cut and paste job of an old piece (Race With Devil On Turkish Highway By Al Di Meola and Steve Vai), which ARR used, along with the rest of the piece, which follows in Panthuvarali! Strange! The piece can be found on:
http://www.mail-bag.com/copycat.shtml
AND the rest of major copies can be found on:
http://www.iespana.es/i2fs/
All the MD's copies and the links which have samples....
Even ARR has 'borrowed', as have all of them, even Ilayaraja Sir, which is the most surprising!

An:
I wouldnt call it C&P. Its highly possible that both ARR and ADM have used it from a commercial loop sample. ADM has used pieces like this from commercially available CDs to embellish his songs, in the past.
