i think "copying" is there for a long time in tamil film history. Here we discuss the tamil songs copied from others.
For a compilation of copied/inspired songs: http://copied.newtfmpage.com

When I was going thru arrahmanonline.com I read some thing interesting but thought provoking stuff. That the Titanic "My heart will go on" has many traces of "Nila kaigiradhu" (slow song..hariharan) and "Minnale" (May Madham) song SPB.
The fact that both these films came long before Titanic makes me think, is there a real untold story.
Kindly find out, as you can only so that.

on: Thu May 16 00:27:56 EDT 2002
illayae there was no bell at all only whistle followed by violin as u said :-)
sorry S, i cud not figure out what it is? is the violin piece a copy or inspired item from anywhere?

rather i wud call it an inspiration to another really famous piece...It wasn't only me, a few others too noticed it...The inspiration can't be other way round, for the sigappu R came in 70s and this 'famous' movie came in 97...

S,
really mine was a geniune question. which is this 'famous' movie that came in 97 has its inspiratoin from the violin+whistle piece of s.rojakkaL and what song in it?

Its amazing...there is indeed a small phrase from the Titanic theme song in the 2nd interlude you mentioned! This is incredible...but yes, its way too short to allege any inspiration!

a case of IR reproducing himself ...
"Ye saami varudhu saami varudhu vazhiya vidungadaa" (Udanpirappu) is remodified and reproduced as "Thai pongalum vandhadhu paalum pongudhu" (Mahanadhi).... the pallavi tune is the same for both the songs...!!!
and another case of IR/KR 'appreciating' themselves by taking the other's tune...
Devadhai (music IR) - "deepangal pesum"... the tune from the anupallavi "muthu muthu vilakku muthathila irukku" .. is given as ... "Thathi thathi aadum" - Alexander (music KR)..[that Alphonsa dance song] !!!
dunno really who got inspired by whom...!!!

now, we'll go to ARR...
1. The song "Roja Roja" (Kaadhalar dhinam) is a direct lift from a Hindi song.. one of my friends who is a hardcore HFM guy, started singing the original even as this song was played somewhere. since i am out of touch with him, couldnt give u the original right now.
2. This is in HFM but since its ARR involved, i'll take it for granted. "O Bhavrey" (Daud) is also a lift from an old hindi song, the source being the same friend.
3. "Vaarayo thozhi" (Jeans) is pallavi-similar to Asha bhosle's evergreen hit "O mere sona re".
4. This cannot be a lift ... just 'sounding similar' IMO... "Poongatriely" (Uyire) hears similar to old chandrababu classic "Pirakkumbodhum azhugindraai" (Kavalai illaadha manidhan).
5. "Thillana thillana" (Muthu) also comes under 4's category... the 'sounding-similar' song is "Endhan ullam thulli vilayaaduvadhum yeno" (dunno the movie.. shd be an Anjali devi one).
I wd again reiterate that i dont say 4 and 5 are copies... just sounding similar... maybe its just like ARR tried with "Chinnakkannan azhaikkiraan" (Kavikuyil) as "Azhagaana raatchasiye"(Mudhalvan).
Ps : Hey.. did anyone note my previous post..? :(

Kiru,
It wasn't me...It was pointed out to raja by a friend (i missed a great oppurtunity...just bcos the meeting was on a weekday :-( )
Raja apparently smiled and said sthg....I will contact my friend and put Raja's words verbatim :-)

Vj:
That hindi song which sounds like roja roja is 'yeh laal rang kab mujhe' from Amar Prem. It only sounds like - rather, 'alleged to be inspired'! Same with the second number...heard about that but dont remember. Other instances are too vague to even comment. Even in vaarayo thozhi the similarity is restricted to the first 3/4 words's tune as always in all other such posts on ARR's so-called tune lifts.
Such instacnes one can generate in tamil film music (and hindi) if he's familiar with western music. Say, one of yes'day's RMIM posts says that IR drew inspiration from Jethro Tull's 'Aqualung' for the 'computer music' (which goes..one two three four now...music and sung in English with some digital sounds). I scrambled to audiogalaxy to download a copy of aqualung and true to the post...you can hear traces of aqualung in IR's version!!!!!! But the inspiration was rather miniscule to point out, so I didnt make noise about it. But going by the 2/3 word sound similarities, I think I can go ahead with this one too! Try aqualung...the very initial sound will remind you of a part of IR's computer music!
- From: vijay (@ 208.61.227.242) on: Fri May 17 11:05:18 EDT 2002
KS, I havent heard "aqualung" in a while but from what I remember I think you are referring to the very first words "sitting on a park bench" and initial guitar prelude bearing the same tune..IN IR's song the tune for the words "feeling very groovy", "really doesnt matter" etc.which gets repeated in the song shows some similiarity to this(in how the notes have been placed).. although the scale is different
- From: Karthik S (@ 203.200.0.236) on: Fri May 17 11:47:32 EDT 2002
vijay:
Yes the scale might be different but a common listener will immeditaly make that connection and that was what i was talking about. It'd be silly to conclude instantly that IR lifted it from aqualung...precisely my point to counter these long standing allegations about ARR lifting tunes from older songs....the similarity is ridiculously miniscule, sometimes restricted to 3/4 words but the common listener will of course jump at it!

IR is supposedly a Jethro Tull fan..but I have no confirmed reports because I never made an effort to listen to Jethro Tull. Maybe I should. But you know that IR has been listening to early rock and other genre. The usage of the electric guitar vibes, strings etc..well I guess all our composers look toward the west to enrich our Film Music.

I thought ARR's 'Roja Roja' recycled Raj Kapoor's 'Rukja O Janewali' in Kanhaiya.

ARR's theme of Rangeela is itself lifted from Boney M's Rasputin.
