hi all, I am Anand from bangalore and a new visitor to the tfm page. I am a great fan of both ARR and IR. I browsed through all the earlier threads on ARR and IR. It seems to me that there are quite a few anti ARRs out here.
Let me tell you something about IRs music. IRs music became popular and sounded different because he tried to bring in a westernization of Carnatic ragas in his songs. Even a dappanguthu was in Lathaangi or sivaranjani. That actually made the difference. Otherwise he is no great MD. One might argue that such a westernization or incorporation of a carnatic raga in a dappanguthu or jazz is something that demands great applause. But IR doesn't deserve that because, if u say u are tuning a song in a particular raagam, you have to bring out the nuances, the laya and bhaava of the raagam in to the song. Just traversing the swaras in the raagam here and there does not mean that u have tuned a song in that raagam. Ilayaraaja has done just that, a mere traversal through the swaras. In many places, there were apaswaras also. ARR has tuned very few songs based on Carnatic ragas but they were classics. For example Mettu podu in Anjali is a beautiful song in Ananda Bhairavi. He has brought out every nuance of the raagam in that song. Minsaara Kanna in padaiyappa is an excellent piece in vasantha. En mel vizhunda mazhai tuliye is again a beautiful piece in kaapi. A real mix of the east and west. That is what u call fusion. Ilayaraaja boasts of having composed songs in rare raagas like chala nattai, kanakangi etc. For example pani vizhum malar vanam in chala nattai is again a pure note traversal. There was no attempt to bring out the nuances in the raaga. So IR knew how to make songs sound good but ARR gives a fine polish to each and every one of his songs. IR composed music for 700 odd films. Hey Ram is his 785th film. Considering 7 songs per movie, he has tuned almost 5500 songs. Huge number indeed but hardly 5% of those songs are listenable others are 100% pure junk. But 99.9% of ARRs songs are listenable and they are also good numbers. What do you say about this?
Regards,
Anand

Dear srikanth,
I did not see ur response about the inspired music/lifted music (of course in the other thread "copying in TFM"http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/17550.07.23.36.html ), summa ingeye maathi maathi discuss panreengale (sila nerathule kadumaiyavum, nothing personal I meant you always try to make it a point),instead of ending always with IR is better a illai ARR bettera inradaivida ( which has been several 1000 times here in DF), could u please give your input on this topic (copying in TFM....this is also discussed quite frequently, but I have a specific issue, in one of the postings I had specifically addressed it to you and others with better/vast knowledge than many of us in this DF.
I personally feel you have great knowledge/experience based on your postings here in DF as well as based on my visits to your own website
thanks
Prabhudas

dear srikkanth!
only today i have seen the bashing on you by someone. dont care about these useless comments.we are here for "bashing" MDs not for bashing each other!!!!!!! :)
even if we bash each other...its acceptable when its of some decent words not like the rubbish i have seen before...
>arr is a good musician
yes! he is a good musician! no doubt in that but all we want to say is dont compare him with IR the ultimate.
>Yes raja was also a great musician during his
here you are wrong!a small change he is not "also a great musicaian during his time" but "the greatest music director of all time" :))
>but when someone like cho makes a statement he >is being blindly trashed, forgetting what Cho is >all about.
i love CHO than anyone else on this thread but ofcourse if its true that he made that statement that he didnt hear good music after MSV's and before ARR's time.... then i have no hesitation to say " he speak rubbish" or "he had some problem in his ears!!!".(He is a great man personally and very intelligent man in politics but it will not mean that all he said about music is correct.)

Folks,
Here is a postion in India Times as to
what the Hindi Cine Playback singer
KUMAR SANU has to say about AR rehman's
music.
This re-iterates that fact that ARR's music
and tunes are repetitive.

Dorai,
appaa ippO thaan Kumar Sanu Oda janmam saabalyam adainjudhu. He was waiting for atleast one person to take his 'musical' comments seriously and YOU have won the sweepstakes. You know that Kumar Sanu has not been invited by ARR to sing any song, but that surely did not cloud KS's mind when he made these comments, Right! KS has sung 1000 songs of which I will say about 6.5 are unique tunes. He is definitely 'qualified' to comment on repititive tunes!

Kumar Sanu, commenting on ARR !! vivasthaiyyey illaama pocchu ! Even though I take to ARR music bashing once in a while, some cheap, third-rate mediocrity like Kumar Sanu commenting on ARR's talent is the most unkindest cut one can give to ARR's talent/musical genius.Ignore the musical ignamorus Mr.Kumar Sanu please
Kumar Sanu has a voice which only deserves to be parodied in public, on top of it someone has compared him with TMS ! No no please do not - oru singerukku thevaiyyaana basic qualtites kooda KSukku kidaiyyaadhu - in this context, I am on ARR's side - imagine how ot would have sounded had KS sang the song "ROja jaane Man" from Roja instead of SPB !!

Madhan,
You might want to know what the same Kumar Sanu had to say about Raja.He was full of praise. And if a person like Cho can bash Raja for no real reason(compared to Cho,Kumar Sanu must
be knowing some music),Kumar Sanu has every
reason to talk about ARR.
Have you heard the songs from the movie 1942 Love Story? This has some amazing songs sung by
Kumar Sanu and believe me all the songs are much better than the song from Roja that you had mentioned.
And compared to many other singers who sing for ARR,Kumar Sanu has reasonably good voice and so need not have to be bashed so much.
I appreciate Kumar Sanu for his temerity in
commenting on ARR especially when every one is trying to hype ARR in all possible ways.Let there be some people there like that as otherwise ARR will think whatever he does, will be appreciated by everyone.
Imagine Udit Narayanan singing for Rajini for Muthu and that is the worst selection of voice I can ever think of.
And have you read what Hariharan has to say
about Raja's music in 96 or so? Raja was maganimous enough to have him sing in his music even after the comments hariharan has made.
ARR has introduced people with little tamil knowledge and with below mediocre voice and so
from a singer's perspective, any reasonably good singer has every right to comment on his music.

correction:
if my memory is right, Kumar Sanu has sung for ARR - the song "mil gayee, mil gayee" from the flop "Kabhi Na Kabhi" (priyadarshan directed, anil kapoor/j.shroff/pooja bhatt), which is (again) a rehash of the Duet song "anjali, anjali".

Athelah Anu Malik ' I am the best MD ever'
Enna da ithu //jokekah irukuthu.
The funniy part if you happen to hear the
reff page interview with Rahman, the interviewer
will ask ARR why you copy or your music is
redundant straight in one question?
I hope they have the brain to ask Anu Malik the
same when copied IR pieces in fist stage of his
career.
Bless you

Suresh: You are correct (about mil gaye, mil gaye). But pretty much, I have learned to discount Music Industry comments because most of them are based on vested interests, carelessness, or some sort of 'equal opportunity favor'. For example, Lata Mangeshkar included Jiya Jale as one of her career Top 10. What a joke? I can list 10 songs from SDB alone which are better than Jiya Jale, and you know what, I think even ARR will agree. But the reality is SDB is dead and is not going to offer any more chances to Lata, whereas ARR can. So might as well butter ARR's bread is the logic.
Also, only fans like us spend time and energy (probably because we have too much of it) in over analyzing objectively when discussing the qualities of MD, songs etc. The artists are (as they should be) focusing on their next 'job' and are making statements in their interest - sometimes negative remarks because they have no hope of getting the business. Tomorrow if ARR invites KS, KS will start suddenly 'discovering' the majic in ARR's tune. In such a case, both 'repetition' and 'majic' are opposite extremes of the real truth.
