Srinath,
I noticed a pet peeve of yours in one of IR's tunes. "Devathaiyilam Devi Unnaich Chutrum Aavi" from "1000 Nilavae Vaa" had very overt, blaring Bass in it. "Andharangam" from the same movie has good Bass though. Another good IR song for Bass is "Kavidhai Paadu Kuyilae Ini Vasandhamae"
One irrelevant note about the latter tune and other tunes such as "Aalai Asaththum Malliyae" had the gargling keenk keenk Synth noise which I disliked in many of IR's mid-80s tunes. I much rather liked the elaborate guitar/flute/veenai interludes he did previous to this period.

Can the interludes of 'vikram... vikram...' from Vikram considered to be good bass scores?

Udhaya:
A better example would be, as I mentioned earlier, "Vaan Megham". The bass in "Devathai Ilam Devi", IMO, is pretty good. It does sound harsh, but the composition by itself is very good and is in full compliance with WCM's ISO standards ;-). Why I dare say this is that, the bass has to be an integral part of the orchestration and play a supplemental role to the chord pattern around which the song is built - which it is in the song that you mentioned - but I agree with you to the extent that the bass sounds too harsh - harsh enough to dominate the song unnecessarily.
My major peeve is with any bass score that does nothing to supplement a song and pops in and out of the main tune (where it does not belong). If you check out the chords for "Devadha Ilam Devi", I'm sure you'll find that the bass guitar hits the perfect note for every chord change, inspite of the fact that the bass sounds as like a bull, let loose in a china shop ! It should have been more subdued, though.

I just discovered an amazing lead and bass guitar song by IR. If SPB could've tamed his English a bit (just a bit because his voice reverberates like an Opera singer's when SPB sings English), and if this song could be extended and remixed, it could vie for the pop and rock'n'roll charts.
Oh, I forgot to mention it, the song is "Angel" from Kavarimaan. I'm listening to this amazing CD combo I got from Singapore, "Pattaakaththi Bairavan, Kavarimaan, Naan Vaazhavaippaen, Nallathoru Kudumbam" (issued by Lakshmi Audio, LA: 3032. This is a must own for every TFM fan). Almost everyone of these movies have songs with great lead and bass guitars. God I miss this soooo much in modern IR songs.

IMO, one of the best bass guitar works of bass guitar is "minnaaram maanaththu". The notes of bass guitar in that song can form a separate tune themselves.

I have played "Megham Kottatum" :) and enjoyed playing it a lot too ! I keep hearing so many songs of IR which have excellent bass scores. Since this thread seems to lack even the bare technical requirements of a lesser appreciated, but widely used instrument, I'll try to fill in some stuff.
Dan Morgan, the author of 'Guitar', has this to say about the bass guitar -
"...a four-stringed instrument, pitched an octave lower than the standard guitar...strings are tuned to the same intervals of the bottom four strings of the guitar - that is, E, A, D, G....normally plays a single note bass part...supplying the fundamental harmonic and rythmic basis to the group...reduced to its absolute minimum it is possible to produce a correct sounding (if unambitious) bass part, purely on the basis of finding the 'name' note of the chord, then following it with the note on the same fret of the string below."
Unfortunately, you need to have a basic knowledge of chords to fully understand this. I'll try my best to simplify it, though. A chord usually has 3 or more notes played simultaneously. For example, the C Major chord has G, C, and E. The rythm guitar plays all three notes simultaneously in one stroke, whereas the bass guitar plays only one of these three notes for each stroke. For variety, two of the notes or even all three can be played, but not simultaneously. For example, if the chord is played 4 times, (all three notes played simultaneously for 4 times), then the C note and the G note can be played alternatively on the bass guitar for each stroke of the rythm guitar.
1st Chord stroke: GCE
Bass: C
2nd Chord stroke: GCE
Bass: G
3rd Chord stroke: GCE
Bass: C
4th Chord stroke: GCE
Bass: G
What I mean by stroke here is, playing three notes on the rythm guitar with one stroke of the hand. What Dan Morgan means by the 'name' note is nothing but the 'C' note. Since the above example plays the 'C Major' chord, the 'name' note would be 'C'. 'The note on the same fret of the string below' refers to the G note in this example.
Therefore, the basics of the bass guitar lie in the way the chord progressions are constructed. The more imaginative the progression, the more interesting will be the bass score. That is why I dislike songs which do not follow this simple rule. A bass guitar used like a lead instrument does not help the song in anyway simply because that is not the purpose of a bass guitar. It is like using a pair of garden shears for neuro-surgery :)
