[Kupps....Prabhu keeps asking IR specifically b'cos he knows very well that self is a non PTRTT...IR, marubadiyum adikka varaadheenga :-)]

IR_Fan - This raga, Saavitri, is not popular in carnatic music. In one of my previous postings, I remember mentioning swaras for "Oru Pattam poochi" - that seems to take the notes of this raga.. with Ri3 touches...

IR,....in that case, does savitri give a 'thilang/jog' like feel based on usage? B'cos, "oru pattam poochi" seems so much like 'naatai/jog family member'...isn't there even a single song in savitri?

hi i am satsona here.
saw ur questions quite late, infact only when the next year Dawned.
regarding ur query about the temple, it very much exists now, some kms from Kumbakonam.
and what is more, similar to Thyagaraja aradhana in Thiruvaiyaaru every year, Sri Oothukaadu's compositions(Saptharathnas) were sung for the first time there last year(2001), by a group of about 80-90 young students of Carnatic music from chennai on September 9th(the composer's b'day). since i am learning CM here, and since my guru was connected with this, i was fortunate to get this chance.
we sang the Saptharathnas there on sep. 9th 2001. hope to continue this every year. depends on the Oothukaadu Trust here in chennai.
any particular reason for ur query? just curious:-)
cheers
Satsona

Satsana,
Actually there is an Aradhanai going on in Oonjalur (near about Trichy), and since my family has been connected to it for some generations now, I was planning to go this year. In fact the Aradhanai starts 2nd of Jan. I wanted to visit some other temples as well. But since I have seen some of the bigger and the more 'famous' temples in Tamil Nadu. (I live in Delhi), I wanted to know about the temples that I thought I had a connection with. :-)
I love that composition, to me it speaks of a kind of touching restlessness. And the imagery, has always struck me as beautiful.
"telinda nilavu.. patta pagal pol eriyude"
I guess I just want to know what source of joy could have inspired such brilliant poetry and faith.
Thanks so much...

Which also reminds me, this is for anyone who lives in DELHI...
The Thyagaraja Utsavam of Delhi will be held on the 24th, 25th and 26th of January at the Vaikunthnaath temple. (Near IIT, next to Kamakshmi Amman temple.)

btw neha,
I guess people started celebrating this utsavam after 1999 in vaikunthnaath temple( of the "Gods-cum-intellectuals own land" Bersaraai), am I right?

laughing... i've lived for twelve years across the street from Ber Sarai, that was a BRILLIANT description. In fact, I just walked back home from there right now, the IIT gods and the JNU intellectuals. Oh well, shouldn't crib. I have close ties with both breeds.
actually, I think it started before that, but it really wasn't high profile or spread over three days. Unlike the other temples in South Delhi, Vaikunthanaath temple tends to maintain an extremely subtle hold. earlier, the Delhi Tamil Sangam (the experts at ruining every damn thing possible) was incharge of most of the cutcherys and concerts, but of late some smaller groups have taken hold. THANK GOD.
self will croak at the utsavam as well. wish me luck. may god bless this makku plaastri.

IsaiRasigai, on same lines, can you please explain the differences between panthuvarali, puriyadhanasree, vasantha and hamsaanandhi with scale/prayogam details and film song examples?

Let me put a few cents worth of thought about these ragas here:
Pantuvarali is the 51st melakaratha raga. Its a very soulful and moving raga. Thyagaraja has composed several kritis. The notes are s r1 g3 m2 p d1 n3 s+ and ulta in avarohana. There have been several film songs too as you dont need too much of gamakams to bring out the beauty of this raga. Even a simple traversal of scale in keyboard shows some identity. MSV's ezhu swarangalil is a classic example of pantuvarali. ARRs hai rama yeh kya karen is also in pantuvarali.
Puriyadhanashree is hindustani version of carnatic purvikalyani. Its derived from 53rd mela Gamanasrama - s r1 g3 m2 p d2 p s+; s+ n3 d2 p m2 g3 r1 s; Film songs in puriyadhanasree - i think there was a discussion in this thread about one song from Bharathi (cant rememember song) sung by Bhavatharini i think. Havent heard of any purvikalyani in films, since it requires lot of gamakas to bring its beauty and is sung usually in slow tempo. You cannot bring its beauty by just playing the notes.
Vasantha is a derivative of 17th mela Suryakantham - s m1 g3 m1 d2 n3 s+; s+ n3 d2 m1 g3 r1 s; Its beauty is easily revealed even playing scales in keyboard. Andhi mazhai is a good example of vasantha. I recently heard a beautiful oothukkadu's song (by Nithyashree CD) "neelamalar kolam kondu" with terrific lyrics. In padayappa "minsara kanna" song sounded like Vasantha. IR clarified it to be Hindustani Basanth to be precise. Not much difference to my ears anyway :-|
Hamsanandi is a much used raga in cine. Derivative of 53rd mela (like purvikalyani) but lacks panchama in both arohana and avarohana. Lot of film songs. Again the raga can be easily identified on playing notes on keyboard. Rathiryil puthirukkum, raga deepam etrum neram are popular ones of Ilayaraja. In kutcheris lots of "thukkada" items are in this raga. Very popular for thillanas too. I confuse this quiet often with Vasantha. But on repeated hearings should be distinguishable.
For all film songs its best you look at the database links at top of the thread.
About YK, yes SSI rendered this raga with remarkable ease. But the best i have heard of yadhukulakambhoji so far is from MDR - the kriti mohanamayi is classic.
hope this helps.

Ram, you might be right..coincidentally it just struck me sometime back that "innarul tharum" matched noteswise the opening parts of "saarasamukhi sakala", a carnatic composition which I have heard Madurai Mani sing..its been a while since I have heard both songs, but this could very well be a huge inspiration and the raga for Saarasamukhi is Gowda Malhar..
they are janyas of dheerashankarabharanam..check their notes here
