  There can only be one singer in my life, and that honour goes to SJ.

  I do think Janaki is more versatile - but I do not agree with restricting responses to Janaki fans (why have a discussion? Chances are most Janaki fans are going to agree with you)

  I feel that we need to look in to another aspect i.e. the media publicity and commercial weightage given to Asha is more though, I feel, (being neutral - I am not a die-hard Janaki Fan)S. Janaki is a better and versatile singer than Asha. Asha is Good, Janaki is better.....
  
  Believe me Asha can NEVER sing a song like SINGAARA VELANE DEVA...

  maybe its comparing apples to oranges, but Janaki amma is probably more versatile than Asha. They have sung in different languages. But when asha sang in tamil/telugu she was not as good as Janaki. Asha's voice suits hindi songs more, due to the kind of diction they have and also she being a native hindi speaker( I believe) she has good control while singing in hindi.
  But Janaki is whole different story. Its not the control of language that makes her better its the control of her singing. IR made her sing the most number of experimental songs ...even the embarassing hissing songs.
  But the good ones like Inji Ela Pazhalaga.. (or something like that) in Devar Magan, Sooreedu Poova..from Anthapuram, telugu version of shenbagamae. shenbagame.. (from Aa Okkati Adakku) , Om Namaha...from Idhaythai Thirudathae and so on ... prove her amazing versatility. She has sung in various languages without difficulty and made it look like she is a native singer (chitra is another such singer) and has never compromised on the mood of the song. Also, if you are a regular of IR's songs I guess there is no need to prove that you are indeed versatile.

  Favorite singer of SPB, PBS, Rajkumar(Kannada), Upendra Kumar, Vijaya Bjaskar, ARR and many more actress(Meena, radhika etc), actors, MDs, lyricists in Kannada, Mallu, Telugu Tamil and even in Hindi is S.Janaki.
  
  Music Masero Ilayarajaa's favorite singer is S.Jaanaki..
  
  She is the most versatiled singer . i doubt, Can we have such a singer in future?

  Digression:
  Media coverage? Absolutely!!
  When Asha objected to constructing the Peddar Road flyover in Mumbai near her house and threatened to migrate to Dubai, Mumbai newspapers publicised the incident crying 'a national treasure will be lost'. At what cost? Traffic congestion experienced by thousands!
  But when SJ was prescribed wrongly by some doc and got critical last year, hardly a newspaper reported it, the incident came out in some nondescript magazine I came across by chance.

  this was an incident i was happened to read in a newspaper being published in kerala.
  janakiamma was waiting in the trivandrum airport for her return to chennai,after completing her concert at trivandrum.one of her fan identified her and went near her and referred about her health(this is reported after that incident-illness due to wrong medicine)
  at once the great legend stood up and replied that she was now fine and with the blessings of fan like her she will for long.really i was wondered to read this and as a graet fan of her feel proud to post in this query!
