a) There was an old MGR movie by the name of "PANAKKARI". I think MGR's role was villain and he dies in the movie. If anyone remembers the movie, please throw some lights especially about the songs in that movie. I think there are some songs by Trichy Loganathan.
b) There was another old movie called "ULAGAM" starring T.E.Varathan and M.V.Rajammah. The movie has a solo by A.M.Rajah with identical tune of the famous "Mere Khahaye" song from hindi "Deedar".
Can anyone tell me what's the name of the song?
c) A.M.Rajah & P.A.Peryanayaki sings three duets in the movie "MARUMAGAL". Two of them are "Chinna chinna veedu katti" and "Kanavilum Ninaivilul Inai Piriyatha". What's the third one?

All the songs I had were passed onto swara and then
to dhooL. I haven't checked if the songs are
actually playing at dhooL because for some reason
I am not able to play any song from their site.
In any case, please send me an email. Let us
see if we can solve the problem.

A tribute worth the while
IT WAS a small gathering sans ostentation of any sort at the Srinivasa Sastri Hall that evening. But everyone present seemed genuinely interested in the subject - K.V.Mahadevan, film music composer who infused wondrous classical tones to cine melodies. Sundar's Ragapravaham paid homage to Mahadevan, who passed away recently, through a lec-dem that was more of an informal interaction between the listeners and the performers.
Assisted by Revathy Krishna on the veena and with accompaniments comprising only the tabla (Periyanayagam) and keyboard (N.V.Babu) Sundar rendered the evening's show with zest.
Sundar had planned the programme with care. He categorised K.V. Mahadevan's songs under various headings - ragas, emotions and singers. He was able to list quite a number of songs under each category. And because he wished to pack as many
examples as possible things went slightly overboard. Before he could finish a couple of
lines from one number, he shifted to another with the speed of a magician that there was hardly any time for the audience to grasp the beauty of the lines sung. Things could have been slower and a less obvious race against time.
From Carnatic ragas, Darbari Kanada, Sahana and Hindolam to Hindustani ragas Palasi Kafi, Pahadi, Peelu and Jonpuri, K.V. Mahadevan had utilised classicism in cinema music with their beauty in tact, explained Sundar, as he reeled out examples.
Mahadevan took classical music to the villages, Sundar said. True. When the ``Paarthaen Sirithaen'' song, from ``Veera Abhimanyu'', scintillatingly rendered by P.B. Sreenivas and P. Susheela, first became a hit (it still is!) little would the young villager humming it, have realised that he was actually practising Sahana raga!
When Sundar himself posed a query about whether K.V. Mahadevan could have been the composer of the M.K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar number in ``Sivagami', there were a couple of enthusiastic responses from the audience. Soon, the experienced and authentic cinema source, ``Film News'' Anandan was at the mike, giving details about how the song sung even earlier by MKT, actually found its way into the film. Such lively exchanges added lustre to the show.
Young, up and coming Easwari, sang the popular yesteryear hit ``Mayangadha Manam Yavum'' with the tone and expression of Banumathi herself.
Sundar made an interesting observation - he said K.V. Mahadevan's songs, especially the romantic ones, invariably had the male voice singing in a bolder and higher pitch while the female's seemed to rely on the male's and seek sustenance from it.
He gave ``Oruthi Oruvanai Ninaithuvittal...'' from the film ``Sarada'' as example. Incidentally, the song was rendered entirely on the veena by Revathy Krishna. After she played the everlasting ``Gangai Karai Thottam'' from the film "Vaanambadi`` in the rare Palasi Kafi raga, Sundar took off from there to list some of the other KVM
numbers in the same raga. ``Kakkai chiraginilae...'' to name one.
All the examples that were put together to form an appealing medley were well-rendered. Except at one or two points when the sruti seemed not completely in alignment.
The blaring horns of vehicles zooming past in the busy Luz area, the not-so-cooperative acoustics and the bare minimal orchestra notwithstanding, the evening was an enjoyable trip down memory lane for ardent admirers of the veteran film music composer.

kik, thanks for the cut and paste. I wish I was there. However, w.r.t. Sundar's observations on 'oruththi oruvanai', the lyric was written first and therefore it was not KVM's choice.
- From: kik (@ ts4-237.silcon.com) on: Fri Aug 3 21:56:09 EDT 2001
sriram: you're welcome. What does the pitch have to do with whether the lyrics were composed before the music?

Hi Everyone:
I am a newcomer to TFM. The query I post below has perhaps been answered already, but I couldn't locate it in the archives. May be someone can point me to the right source.
I had heard a jazz piece many years back which reminded me of Anubhavam Phudhumai (from Kaadalikka Neramillai). However, I have
forgotten the name of the piece or its composer. I was wondering whether one of you might have this information.
Many thanks.
Venkat

Talking about T.A.Mothi, he is much senior singer, singing during the time of Gantasala, TL and CSJ. Was he sidelined by the entry of AMR, just the same way AMR was sidelined by PBS?
BTW could someone tell me which movie his song `Odakkara Odakkara Odathil Etrichelvai' with Banumathi from. Is it `RANI'?

kik,
The song starts like`Aaha aaduveney', then few lines later the tune changes. Then comes the lines `Oodakkara'. Superb song. You could hear it at kumudam.com music page under P.Banumathi hits.

a.a: The song is from Gemini's Approva Sogthrargal starring MK.Radha in dual role and P Bhanumathy. I did see this movie three times. In fact there is another great song in that movie sung by the legend Bhanumathy. It goes..." Aadum Cholai..Malai Neram Maa Nadiyorum.Kanave..Kandaene.... Music is by G Ramanathan and S Rajeshwar Rao

I think Vicky is right. 'Aboorva Sagotharargal' was
an important early hit for Bhanumathi. I think the
movie came in 1949. It had 3 MDs: S.Rajeswara Rao,
MT Parthasarathy and R.Vaidyanathan.

The sad thing is I have aboorva sahotharargaL, watched it last year - the only song I remember is a multi-language song sung by bhanumathi as she entices a whole troop of soldiers into the kitchen and locks them up.

Vicky & SK,
Thanks for the infomation. It's been a long time and I did remember only two Bhanumathis's songs in that movie. Manun mayilum aadum cholai which Vicky mentioned and Laddu laddu mittai venuma. Your info brings back my memory.. yes Oodakkara is indeed from Aboorva sahothrargal.
Thanks again

Here is an interesting anecdote I read in an
article by Randor Guy:
In the early years of playback singing the gramophone discs did not carry the name of the singer. Instead the name of the character was printed on the label. For example in a duet was sung by P. Bhanumathi and T.A. Mothi in the Gemini Studio production, written and directed by Acharya ( T.G. Raghavachari), "Apoorva Sahodarargal" (1949), the disc did not carry the name of Mothi ( a well known playback singer of yesteryears). Instead the name of the character played by the star and fine actor, M.K. Radha., "Vijay" was given on the label.

Sk: I was looking for a song composed by GR (my favorite composer) and he did a duet with TV Ratnam for a movie called "Ponmudi". That was the earliest known duet by G Ramanathan. In those days they used to paly that on Sunday Morning around 10am in Madras B (AIR) and also VN Janaki duet with AP Komala from Arignar Annavin Vellaikari goes by "Oridanthanile..Nilai Illa Ulaginilae...Urundodidum Panam Kasenum Urvamana Porulae" ...what a great song..copmosed by CR Subburaman. Is there a link to this song? Also another song by Bharatidasan from AVM's "OoR IRAVU" sung by MS Rajaeswari and TA mothi and composed by Sudarsanam. The song goes like this" Thunbam Nergayil...Yazh eduthu Nee". I think SK...you can help. There is another one...sung by TV Ratnam....Pulli Vechanne..Vechhathudhan" from Aiyram Thali Vangiya Apoorva Chinthamani (what a great Modern Theatres Movie directed by TR Sundaram". Composer is G Ramanathan (Asthana MD for Modern Theatres). In fact I saw the rock from where Madhuri Devi pushed AS Natarajan from in the movie Mandhiri Kumari (MD GRamanathan) on the way to Yercaud. There is still the name Modern Theaters inscribed and looks desolated. I those days TR Sundaram ruled Salem introducing great talents to TFM.
Rest later
