  IR_Fan :-) this is what I tried - if you play any instrument - tune it to the pitch of the song - then try repeating exactly what you hear - if you think it is Ma2, then try how that same phrase would sound if you use Ma1. ippadi paNNi thaan I figured it is Ma1 and not Ma2. yes, indeed this is an ongoing topic for dicussion :-) I dont think any of us claim that we are correct - we are all expressing our opinions and thoughts!!! so, this is indeed interesting and healthy!!!!!

  IR, that is the same technique i use. But apart from the 'muchukku' phrase, even one of the interlude BGM starts with Ga3 Ma2 P S S Ni3 S. Adha try panni paarunga. I am sure idhu Ma2 :-).

  And there is another song by Ilaiyaraaja which is again in Lathangi if i am not wrong. The song is in film Maamiyar Veedu and starts "Ennai Thodarndhu..."

  In actual sruthi's, there are 4 madhyamams. Only two of them are represented as m1 and m2. May be the chinna rasave latangi/sarasangi contains a sruthi between the two m&m 's? then surely the keyboards cant figure it out. Maybe this particular ma is called tivra (sharper) shuddha madhyamam or chyutha (flatter) prathi madhyamam? :-)

  Vasu, would you by any chance, have any interesting material on the other 2 madhyamams? WOuld really appreciate if you could mail them to me. Long back, I read an article in Hindu based on Sri. S.KalyaNaraman's lecture/demo at Music Academy. He demonstrated these 2 madhyamams and a new set of 72 melakarthas based on these 2 madhyamams. And Anuradha Sriram (M. Anuradha then), a senior disciple of SK, sang these 72 melas in the demo.

  Ram, both 'Paarijhaadha poove' and 'Naan sirithal deepavali' have anya swaras (mohanam usage for instance). I don't think they are sudha saveri. Forum hub'la post panniirukken. Poi paarunga.
  
  :-) Ram, IR'oda Gambheera Naatai kaetta 'war mood' varaadhu, 'love mood' thaan varum. Singaravelan song'la Gambheeranaatai'ya love situation'la use panni summa poondhu vilayaadaraaru namba IR. :-)

  Sundar Atre, i really loved the song 'Nenjil Jil Jil'. What a soulful song from ARR. These are the types that i wud like to see more from ARR (whatdya think Ram?).
  Andha Paatula i can see Kaapi, IMHO. Maybe IR, Ram,Sindhuja, Anu,Vaasu etc will tell more authentic information abt the song.

  Vaasu/Ram, u r right. 'Chinna Chinna' from Mouna Ragam can be called Gowrimanohari with Ni2. But 'Sendhoora Poove' definetly not. Adhu oru stunning 'swara kalappu'. Strong "Ni2 Sa Ri2 Ga2" use apart, chranam'la song peeks into sivaranjani too if i am not wrong (towards the end). Raagam base solla mudiyaadhu or rather solla koodaadhu

  i am new to raaga identification. so i may be wrong and silly too:) in some cases. just a try
  
  a) Aasaiya Kaathula Thoodhu Vittu - Johny
  b) Ennama Kannu Sowkyama - Mr.Bharath
  
  i think both the songs are in Sindhu Bhairavi.
  
  and i have a doubt. How to identify the raaga "saramathi".in some cases it sounds similar to SB.
  Paadariye,Padipariye - Saramathi.
  Nenjinile(Uyire) - Saramathi

  a) Natabhairavi
  b) Sindhu Bhairavi
  
  And regarding Saramathi confusion, i think i will give you a basic view,
  
  Saramathi's scale is
  Aarohanam - Sa Ri2 Ga2 Ma1 P Dha1 Ni2 Sa
  Avarohanam - Sa Ni2 Dha1 Ma1 Ga2 Sa
  
  So take off Pa & Ri2 from the Natabhairavi scale in avarohanam, and that is Saramathi.

  Saramthi and SB have some striking similarities.
  Though the variations can be observed as in the scale:
  
  SB - naatakapriya janya
  Sa Ri2 Ga2 Ma1 Ga2 Pa Dha1 Ni2 Sa
  Ni2 Dha1 Pa Ma1 Ga2 Ri1 Sa Ni2 Sa
  
  Saramathi- natabhairavi janya
  Sa Ri2 Ga2 Ma1 Pa Dha1 Ni2 Sa
  Sa Ni2 Dha1 Ma1 Ga2 Sa

  Ram, Charukesi (belongs to 1st 36 in the 72 mela ) , Shanmughapriya (next 36) differing by Madhyamam. also Ghandharam varies with g3, G2 respectively.

  seri, Edhazhhil Kadhaiyezhuthum from Unnal Mudiyum Thambi enna raagam.. sounds like a variation of vasanta, but not able to get the right one.

  Ram, no judgement from my side, but i hear more of charukesi. Charanam ippo kettaen, ghandharam used is G3 if am correct. If played on an instrument that just hearing, we will come to definite idea. I will keep you posted shortly.
  
  I wanted to know if there are any Ilayaraja songs in NaataiKurinji.
  
  Also, i wish to know if the song 'Edhazhhil' from unnal mudiyum thambi is lalitha (resembling swaras from 'nannubrovu lalitha' of Sri Shyama sastri). Please confirm.

  Idhazil is an Agmark Lalitha....it is close cousin of vasanta....
  Lalitha-SRGMDNs-SNDMGRS....
  Vasantha-SGMDNS-SNDMGRS.....Interestingly in th film the herione's name is lalitha...so IR has set it that raga....other good Lalitha based songs are "Vanakuyile" from Priyanka,
  "Amma Janani" in IR's Geethanjali(a devotional album),"Thirumagal un mugham" in Veera...
