The most awaited sandiyar album is released .I heard all the songs. It has totally ten songs out of which 6 songs are sung by kamal himself and two are sung by illayaraja and 2 numbers by shreyaghosal. All the songs are perfect folk and 100% traditional tamil folk songs and the lyrics are excellent in the madurai slang and all are situational songs.I will meet u again with a detailed review.buy the album immediately for die-hard fans of IR

Yes folks.. the album is simply great! for those who have an open mind but still dont like this album, a piece of advice:
Just reserve your comments for 1 month and keep listening to this album..You will change your mind dramatically!
It happened to me! I could not appreciate PMagan instantly.. Now, I start enjoying PMagan like anything. Now my favourite song in PMagan is "Kodi Yethi vaippom"

To me a song is impressive when after just one listneing it:
(1) makes me listen to it repeatedly
(2) does not make me listen repeatedly since it is new, but props up in my thoughts or lips totally unexpectedly later and becomes a favorite
Most of the early songs of IR and his malayalam songs (not manasinikkare) fell in category 1 for me. Some of his recent songs like:
(1) oLiyilE therivadhu
(2) piraiye piriaye
(3) iLangathu
(4) adada
(5) onne vida
seem to fall in category 2. shreya goshal's pronunciation is really nice for a northie. Much better than sadhana.

Guys,
After repeated listening, I am finding IR tried something new in all the songs(mostly beats).
Given the situations of the songs, IR really did well.

The album is quite good. To me Annalakshimi/ Sandiyare seems to be the best. Such a simple folk tune and IR has woven it into a great song. Such a short piece and when it ends abruptly, everytime I wish it has continued. Reminds me, in terms of impact, of one of IR's first creations- the marriage preparation song in Annakkili. Such a lively piece, folk tune sang with a lot of joy.

i said earlier
"Andha Kandamani and Kombule Poo Sutthi are really good"
OK I TAKE IT BACK....
i shouldn't be saying it "really good". Not fair.
heh he he..I say the whole album simply rocks....
i couldn't stop singing "Viru Virumandi, Virumandi" now Kamal+IR combo never failed weren't they?
man this is really good. Will this go for NA?...
and finally we have songs which fits the story and gives us some sort of idea what the story is all about (i mean the purpose for releasing an audio earlier is for that rite?)

I felt they could have used other singers too
for variety. When was the last time SPB sang
for Kamal?

I too missed SPB in this album!
Wish they had included some songs in both SPB and Kamal versions. SPB for the listening pleasure and Kamal for the 'natural' feeling when watched in the context of the movie!
That apart, I think Raaja has given us 10 absolutely 'different', non-formula songs, without bothering about the current trend of soft, superfluous, often 'Tanglish' numbers. I am sure there exisits a large audience to lap up the songs in this album. There hasn't been an effort like this before!
Because of the high-profile tag attached to Kamal's movies, hopefully the songs get their due recognition. Remember Raaja's earlier effort in Nasser's Devathai, where he had an enchanting folk ballet (koothu-style) about the 'arakkan', which largely went unnoticed?
Wonder who plays Kamal's sister's role ("Paechi")? I saw Rohini in the picture. Could taht be her? Or Kuyili?

Typical IRish. Refreshing to hear relaistic folk numbers after a long time. All the songs shud be situational just like 'Pottri Padadi Ponne' in Devar Magan.

Liked 4 tracks (Andha Kandamani, Annalakshmi, Kannasaicha, Kombula Poovasuthi and Onna Vida) in the first listen. The situations for these songs are going to be of paramount importance for the songs to succeed. The overall orchestration is a lot more loud, but refined...maybe to make the songs sound powerful!
The therukoothu-like song and the mandatory pathos songs are pathetic. Within a movie format I dont think therukoothu makes sense - its an immensely successful tool in a village stage/ street, but with the advancements in movie/music projection, it'd look completely out of place inside a theatre, however talented the performer might be.
Kamal seems to be on a major ego-trip (as if thats new!) singing so many songs...think its time Raja reprimanded him :-)

Listened to the songs. I dont think we can compare this with "Thevar Magan" or "Muthal Mariyathai". No comments as of now. Need to watch the movie to really appreciate how well the songs suit for the situations.

A fantastic offer from IR. So blessing for tamil listeners, who have been bathing in so much trash from others like ARR. IR the king will live forever in TFM. All songs are truly amazing. Only a musical genius like IR is capable of such treats.

Hi all,
I am hooked to Onne Vida. I think this is the best IR song this year and one of his all time bests. I like the simplicity of the music especially the pallavi and lyrics.
The next best would be Kombula (nice fun song). Then Andha Kandamani (I was looking for IRs voice and read somewhere its IR and kamal's voice fused) and Annalakshmi.
I think the movie should have a great BGM (rarely IR falters in this area). I think we are getting back the quality of 80s IR with him constantly experimenting and trying new things. IR needs movies like this all the time, to give better music than regular movies with four duets and a sad song.
Given IR's previous great albums, I would not say this is the greatest or even greatest folk. But the appreciable thing is IR has given authentic tamil folk music and Kamal used authentic tamil folk artists.
The thing I didnt like is the use of synth in some places and singers maybe someone who would have made a greater impact with this accent of tamil (though he did not succumb to the current tanglish trend, it could have been better) and the "Viru Viru mandi Virumandi" bit. Also, Kamal should stop hyping about the movie (atleast to get his money back).
This album is a must for IR fans and for others, it needs quite a few hearing to appreciate these songs.
Vatsa
