Guys this thread is to discuss abt lyrics. kindly do not bring in ARR or IR or HH or anyone
here. There are several other threads for these discussions -so kindly give your input there.
Thanks

good work, udhaya. and thanx for renewing this thread.
the more I delve into the magical wonders of IR's music, the more i feel that lyrics, on the whole, have become a casualty. it is easy to argue that today's lyricist must write to a tune, but in the process it fetters the poet's freedom to write what comes to him naturally, his sinthanaigal, untrammelled by tune and orchestra.
even under such trying circumstances, VM has acquitted himself, esp. in "poraalae ponnuththayi". though its a very difficult tune to write to, the lyrics manage to stand out:
un maale kirukku
uLLoora irukku
vaai vittu chollaththaane
thoodhu illa
vaigaikku kadalil sera
yogam illa
athu seri vyaazhanum velliyum
iruppadhu dhooramilla.
absolutely amazing karpanai. look at the way he brings out the "kaadhal vayappatta gramaththu peNNin nilaimai" (sorry, english varavillai). and how she is reconciling herself to the "ettaakkani", her love.
IMO, MSV's greatest cointribution to TFM has not been so much his great music, but the nourishing of kannadhaasan's boundless talent.
another lyricist who has penned some great lines is panju arunachalam, who is not so much discussed in these days of Tinglish.
was listening to the song "ponnezhil pooththgadhu puthu vaanil" from kalangarai viLakkam. mind-boggling wordplay with substance.
"thennai vanaththil
unnai mugam thottu
eNNaththai chonnavan
vaadugiren
un iru kaNN pattu
puN patta en nenjil
un pattukkaippada paaduginren"
whew!! blew me off my chair, i swear.
lots more great songs to talk about. your turn, udhaya saar.

add-on:
btw,
i have a thread in mind regarding lyrics that "kill" u. i mean, not bad lyrics, but songs which have peculiar and often ludicrous metaphors or similes.
for eg:
selayile veedu katta vaa
serndhu vasikka
jannal vechcha jacket podava
thenral adikka
i mean, this is crazy. bad lyrics i can understand, but what kind of a karpanai is this, i fail to understand.
the same song ends
"kaalam neram enbathu
kaadhalil illaya
kama devan kovilil
kadigaarangaL thevaiya"
aaaarrrgghhhh! atrocious is the word.
looking fwd to feedback.
footnote: i think discussing Kannadhaasan's lyrics merits a separate thread. maybe we can also have an exclusive one for songs with social messages (pattukottai, nsk)

cram: Search, I mean use the search box on top, say when you are gone for lunch or some thing, for kannadasan in the archives. You will get atleast 10-15 threads with a lot of interesting discussion. If you want to continue discussion, revive a thread by posting in it. Hope this helps. Similarly you couls search for samudhaya karuthulla paadalgal or NSK or whatever you want. Rem. the more keyowrds you give the more accurate your search. If you are using a lot of words, remember to 'or' your serach, that helps.

cram: as you can see both of us have spelt kannadAsan's name diffrently. I would suggest that you use all possible spellings you can think of and or your search.

Growing up I used to think that two of Kannadhaasan's songs were silly:
1)Koondhal Karuppu Kungumam Sivappu
2)Ettadukku Maaligaiyil Aetrivaitha En Kanavan
Later I changed my mind about both when the underlying meaning became clear. I learned that Kannadhaasan was referring to DMK's colors when he wrote, "Koondhal Karuppu Kungumam Sivappu".
About,"Ettadukku Maaligaiyil Aetrivaitha En Kanavan" Vaali, of all people, explained this song as one of his favorite Kannadhaasan songs. Apparently the ettadukku refers to the husband's body measure. Thannai than thalaikkum maelae vaiththuk kondaadiya kanavan thannai vittup pirindhaan endru soagaththil paadugiraal kaadhali.
I love realising the underlying second layer of meaning in a song.
Here's a clever turn of words in the song,"Unai eththanai murai paarthaalum salippadhillai":
ni tha ma sari thaa
kaaman kani nee
kani nee patha maa
kaadhal suvai nee
Here the first and third lines sound like Carnatic aalabanai (is that the proper term?) and SPB sings it like it too. But upon closer inspection they read as nithamaa? sarithaa and kani nee pathamaa?. I love that kind of wordplay. I think Pulamaippiththan (another grossly overlooked writer) wrote this song from Neeya.

IMO on "Ettadukku":
The lyric is explained as follows:
"Enn chaann udambirku sirasae pradhaanam" is an adage. It seems everyone's body is roughly eight times one "chaann" of his own hand!(for those who do not understand what chaann is:spread your palm wide - the distance between the tip of the thumb to that of the little finger is one chaann) Try measuring it and you will find a amazing fact that the belly is just one chaann in length. From this stemmed the pulambal "oru chaan vayiththukku intha paadupadurom". Hence the "ettadukku" maaligai means as Udhaya has explained is indeed the body. The "thalaivan" who considered her to be higher than his body (which obviously is his soul) had now deserted her.

there's another adage that goes, `erumbum than kaiyaal eNN chaan', which also means what murali sankar has said. it only goes to show that all creatures, great and small, are equal in the eyes of GOD. (now, let's not start a aaththiga-naaththiga discussion).

Murali and cram,
Thanks for elucidating my posting. Here's a song whose pallavi lines are great, too bad I can't remember the rest of the song.

Mounaththil vilaiyaadum is almost a ditto of "Maanasa Sanchararey". Both are in Saama Ragam.

Here kavignar kannadasan very aptly uses Janakis suyamvaram to express the emotions of Vanisree.
