Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

Saravanan,
I have to wait for 8 more hours to listen to this great song :(
You know what, a couple of my music-loving friends had earlier enquired where I could find this song after I sent them 'thingaL mAlai...' that someone from this website found and made a MP3 version for download. I still remember my friends' request for this song. Salil Choudhury could be an obscure name in Tamil Cine Music, but he has fans who remember each one of his songs, though there are only a few in Tamil. Thanks a lot to Arun who found this song and to you for an informative write-up on Salil Choudhury. I would greatly appreciate if you can send me the MP3 version.

bb and Saravanan, thank you, thank you, thank you. I have searched for this song for about 10 years and I know one day it will be featured here.
Janaki and Yesudas are amazing, as always. How I miss them (along with SPB and Vani Jayaram). Today's tfm does not have such singers - that is certain imo.

I believe Salilda used one of his Bengali originals as an inspiration for this duet. Unlike "naan ennum pozhudhu" which was totally adapted (except for the BGMs) from "naa mOnO laagE naa", in the case of uLLamellaam, Salilda used the chord structures, changes, and general flow of melody from "O mOr mOinaa gO". Listen to the original and note the similarities (as well as the dissimilarities).

An example I would use is when IR composed poongaatru pudhidhaanadhu, modified it for Sadma in Ei Zindagi galE lagaalE, and then used the modified tune in thamizh again as en vaazhvilE. However, in this case the song was different, but some segments of the BGMs were similar.

"But the kadalkarai has never been properly utilised in Tamil Films. Before anybody reminds me of K B let me hasten to add that the waves have only overacted (?!?) in Sindhu bhairavi and Maro Charitra.
the only worthwhile effort was on the much maligned DD TV in the chinna screen adaptation of Vannanilavan's Kadalpurathil- the story of a fishing hamlet told through the eyes of Philomina. unfortunately i did get to watch only a couple of episodes. "
Raj, check out one of my favorite songs in this genre: http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/127.html

valai yendhi chelvom is a rare composition, with an astounding percussion intro, i think composed for Tamil only, not heard in other lingos except Bengali maybe. It seems like a continuoous tune, no breaks, wonderful chorus. The best group song since IR' amazing group folk-street songs of 70' sevvalli poo... kada thengayo, and several S Janaki chorus songs....
Great going on the 500th...

bb,
the quote is mine and the song is for RAJ? again it is a malayalam remake.
p,
kadalpookal I have not seen. so can't comment.
kadalorakavithaigal and other Muttam based BR movie- alaigal oyvathillai are passable .
They also say Iyarkkai is good . have to catch up with it-if I can brace upto shyam that is!
kadal meengal was also a big no no- ore malayala vaadai - of course it had " thalaatuthe vaanam" a cute number.
on second thoughts the best sea song is Visu Ramu's foottapping masterpiece " Atho antha paravai pola" but the picturisation was good only in patches. for the most part "karaithattiya padagil padamakapattathu" vaathiyaar had sea sickness, maybe ;-))

SJ deserves special mention for "ullamellaam thallaadudhe" and note the way she sings the lower notes with the apt expressions "thullum alai thottu en kaalai muthamittu" -simply superb. Salil and SJ combination has been memorable in Madhanotsavam, Kokila(kannada) and azhiyaadhakolangal(a lively folk song).

Aahaa! your explanation and description was superb...... they don't
write songs like these nowadays, or at least it is very very
rare...Earlier they used to write poetry, set it to music and call it
cinema songs, nowadays ......
Much later there was a film, Ennathaan Mudivu, it goes this way....
Paapi ennai marupadiyum pirakka vaikkathey naan..... I would like to
hear your comments on it. Any how appreciate the extent of your
knowledge on the previous song.Keep up the good work.

Did anybody heard SJ's 'Sanje Tangaali Taa Beesalu' from the movie 'KOKILA', this song is very rare gem, I heard this song very long back. What a expression. I like SJ's 'viraha' type of songs very much. She has sung lot of viraha songs under Rajan-Nagendra and G.K.Venkatesh's compositions. And SJ has sung one more Kannada song under Salil is 'JoJo Laali Naa Haduve' a lulluby song, movie was 'Chinna Ninna Muddaduve'. Nice song.
bb, thanks for 'Ullamellam Thallaadudhe' song. And also Saravanan's review.
regards
Meera

Thanks for mentioning
paavi ennai maRupadiyum piRakka vaikkAdhE
seydha paavam ellAm theerum munnE iRakka vaikkaadhE
very soulfully sung by TMS. Music is by R Sudharsanam, I think. Kannadhsan wrote it very much along the pattinaththaar philosophy. It comes as a background song when TS Balaiah goes around visiting temples repenting for all the sins he has committed. Brings tears to your eyes. I consider the movie as one of the best of KSG.

It was very nice listening to 'ullamellAm' after a very long time. The song, as is typical of most of Salil Choudhury's compositions, makes a lingering effect that makes you listen to repeatedly. A very unconventional song in Tamil film music. There is a typical Malayalam flavor in the song and the first interlude reminds 'pUvaNNam...'. The orchestration is rich and typical of Salil Choudhury.
I felt that the tinkering done through a software to reduce the noise distorted the charm of the song.
