Unii menon, in this ambalam issue, has complained that in TN there is no due value for the singers. I put his thoughts on a balance but came out with no right key. Let me open this topic to discuss what other TFM forum members feel about this.

I dont think so, arr gave him good break he did not capitalize it. These singers have to come out of film barrier and start working on private albums, as fans - it is high time we should start respecting private albums. Movie is not the only medium anymore..
Hariharn and shanker mahadevan
are doing well...how ? If you have stuff simply tamilnadu will respect you.

With less number of releases of movies in the lost two years out of 300to 350 songs recorded for TFM in a year and hardly 20 songs become popular other songs most of the people never listen...
Unni menon oflate does not get chance to sing any hit number...hence he is crying...

I would appreciate if somebody throws some light on what he means by "due value"..I don't understand what he expects?

in order to get more songs, he should stop singing like kjy or kjy should change his style
:)
fliflo he should have read few IR's interview...and started to think in similar lines. what else we can say, :)

comment...you have a valid point...but let's not bring either IR or anybody else here as that is going to be a subject by its own..if he has achieved something great and asks for a "respect" then there is a point..or if he has personalised saying that I sing so good but people do not listen to me then still his claims stand valid..he generalises the statement saying that "there is no due respect"..I feel the other way..can anybody mention who is the famous exclusive kannada or Telegu film singer(s)..Certainly, Tamil film singers become more noticed when compared to other language singers..then why this big blame??

fliflo secondly, we dont know what unniMenon spoke, the reporter might have twisted words who knows.
IR gave him a break in Pon mane, for some reason he was not used again, few known to me blame KJY for that, it seems he tried to stop him, however, i dont belive this crap because
arr gave him a break , but still he could not come to the top, why ?, this time no KJY around...
Imho Talent cannot be contained or controlled.
He should work hard!...thats all.

Folks,
Is 'Pon Manae' from Oru Kaidhiyin Diary really rendered by Unni Menon? I have a audio cassette that I purchased from Madras which credits it to KJYesudoss.
Thanks.

I think the conversation here has taken a wrong direction. Please read the interview carefully. Unni Menon is not complaining about his popularity or about his not getting enough opportunities to perform. He talks like he feels that he is doing pretty well lately. His complaint is that the singers (all of them, not just him) do not get enough publicity from the media. That is all.

I think 'Vijay' is a nickname Unnimenon used under Raja. Like Naagoor Babu in telugu becomes Mano in tamil.

To all,
I agree with Neels. You are going in the wrong direction. Even Unnimenon admitted in his article "En Paadu" for Ananda Vikatan that his songs in tamil became more popular and that his tamil songs brought him into light. He says fans enjoy his tamil songs more. Just go intothe archives of Vikatan if you want. Don't make it look like he meant to put down 'Tamil' and get into silly politics. I think that what he has mentioned is very true. There isn't much to disagree with. But of course, some singers come to the light not because they are more talented than others but by God's grace and luck. Talent is not the sole reason to fame. But people like to bank on the current top. That's the way all people are. TN people are no exception. So top stars get much publicity and they will pay them anything. But then, I don't think the people of TN really have much appreciation for music. They can appreciate it in movies but not outside of that circle, because they need a visual medium for the songs to reach them. There only form of entertainment is cinema, afterall. I am speaking in general, IMHO.

Hey Neel & aruvi;
Thanks for your explanations..my basic question was what he means by due value...that question remains unanswered still..What kind of due value thay get in other languages, which is not in tamil...kindly enlighten..

on: Sat Apr 14 14:10:49 EDT 2001
I don't think that was in the question. So basically, your question does not reflect on UM's answer. Had they asked if singers are given more value in other languages, it would have been different.

Mr. aruvi;
"Inge paadagarkalukku mariyaadhai kidayathu?". This is the title of the article. Tell me how else you translate or understand this. This has an implicit meaning that they give "due respect" somewhere else..If he has mentioned that the situation is same in entire india that is different. He says, he likes people welcoming other language guys but does't like the "due respect" aspect..In my feeling, in TN singers get equal or more respect like any other state...He says there in no publicity for singers here..What kind of publicity or else he expect..This is the one I have been repeatedly asking..I don't think I am wrong anywhere..Let me also know how you view or understand the above statement of his..

Fliflo,
I understand your question. I guess only UM can elaborate. In TFM singers did get a lot of publicity and most of the pothujanam knew their names until ARR came into picture. But after that there have been millions of singers introduced and lot of them sound the same and people are having a hard time keeping track of them. The uniqueness in voice we had before the nineties does not exist anymore. Also there were usually 3 to 5 singers in an album in the pre-ARR times. But these days each album has a mailing list of names on them and every one of them gets lost in the list.

pon manae...is indeed sung by unni menon...
he himself has said this in a TV interview...
raaja named him as 'Vijay'....
Vijay yesudoss might be in his early 10s during kaidhiyin dairy times.

I think singers get publicity in TN only after singing quite a number of songs. It is usually the composer and lyricist who get more exposure. But, like Neel, says, if there are too many singers being introduced for novelty sake then people dont know who that person is. I think this is understandable. UM already knows who to blame, when he says, 'ARR has the confidence he can make a song a hit with any singer'.
- From: eden (@ 210.214.5.193)
on: Tue Apr 17 01:32:15 EDT 2001
Kiru, UM probably didn't know Raja had the confidence much earlier:-))Even the songs for which he did `track singing' were roaring hits (nAnAga nAnillai thAyE is one e.g.)! One of IR's all time great numbers was with Krishna chandar (EdhO mOham)! Many claim Raja made great gains with SPB which IMO is incorrect and it's the other way around...To prove my point, none of the first 4 movies of BR (songs were mega hits) featured SPB...
Now coming to this so called `due respect issue', IMO, the title of the ambalam article `ingE pAdakarkaLukku mariyAdhai kidaiyAdhu' is questionable, with intentions to stir up controversy (yellow journalism)...in the whole interview, UM is quite positive. There is a last Q, what you like & not like in TF ...and what UM had told, is probably in a lighter vain (he might have meant the level of recognition of singers in MFM -KJY is a demi god here- is non-existent in TFM)...

When people born and bred in TN are not getting their due in Tamil films, where is the question of the UNNIs getting their due?
But for the magnanimity of the Tamilian born singers (The magnanimity which lacks with malayalam films , telugu and kannada films), you cannot hear so many alien state singers 'killing' tamil in the tamil film songs.
Let me pray with Unnimenon to Almighty to get a due value for tamilnadu singers even,.
Listen to the voices in Light music orchestras and TV music shows in Tamilnadu. You'll know my point.
