  What do you people think of Hariharan? I really like his voice even better than SPB's. More masculine IMO. No contest when it comes to talent! Of all the new singers these days he sounds the most promising. (excluding UnniK.)
  
  I think Hariharan and Kamalhaasan (pottu veitha kaadhal thittam) are the only two male singers who can hit those high notes without hesitation. Comments?

  Do you think Hariharan can render the above songs like SPB? Hariharan and Unni fall under the same "sub-manly" voice category. No way near SPB.
  SPB IS INCOMPARABLE.
  
  Hari is a good singer,the very base of Hariharan being Gazal renditions, suggests us clearly that he has to mellow his voice and his voice cannot sound manly as expected!!

  Gopal, You misunderstood me. By "No contest when it comes to talent!", I meant Hariharan was no match for SPB when it comes to singing ability and versatality. I didn't elaborate because I thought it was too obvious. My fault, sorry.
  
  But I still believe Harharans voice sounds more masculine than SPB.

  Hariharan's voice and masculinity ? don't joke - most of Hariharan's songs lack depth ; in an effort to downplay the gamakas which Hariharan is prone to make because of his classical background, he sings from the mouth and not with his inner depth. How can anybody say that his voice is more masculine than SPB's.

  IR is MD.

  listen to these songs, see how masculine his voice is.

  I did not intend to this thread to be a comparison between SPB and Hariharan. Please forget the comparison. Let's just talk about Hariharan alone. I think he has done a wonderful job in the following songs:
  
  * Uyire Uyire (No matter what I was doing I have always found myself humming along when I listen to his charanam in that song.)

  * Kadhalee Kadhalee

  In Kaadhalukku Mariyadhai, eventhough I liked IR's version of the song, Hariharan has also done a good Job.

  Another great song by Hariharan is from the movie Soorya Vamsam music by SAR ... Eventhough the voice seems to be technologically simple when compared to Chandiranai thottadhu yaar by ARR, it sounds great for the melody.

  IMO, Hariharn's is the most promising new voice even including Unnikrishnan's, of the recent newcomers. I like his voice a lot better than UK, Srini, Suresh Peters, Sahul, Krishnaraj, Yugendran, Karthikraja, et al. He can not be( and should not be ) compared to the levels of TMS, PBS, SPB, KJJ, et al. I seem to like all his songs both TFM & HFM and from his private album.
  There is something distinctly unique about his voice( I don't know if I can call it the Masculine Nature ) that makes his songs( both fast tempo ones as well as the slow melodious ones ) sound nice.
  I do feel that he has a long way to go but would dare to mention that he is well positioned for that. He definitely needs a lot of modulations, voice variations, etc., etc., I did feel that his voice cracked a bit at the high pitch of "Vennilavey, Vennilavey) of MK
  Thanks to ARR for bringing him into TFM and even more glad that Hariharan started singing songs for IR( waiting to hear the song from KM and I just got the cassette today ).
  Deva seems to be using him a lot more than the others( like Deva's Aasthaana Paadagar ), every Deva's movie has one or more songs by HH.

  Hari is just a new singer he still has a lot more
  way to go ...I mean in singing as you guys said he does have
  a nice voice but he cant get closer to SPB's experience and thiramai .

  I have listened a lot to Hari's ghazals (please do listen to "Hariharan in Concert" if you guys can) and to songs like "Let me see the love" (Hamsathwani raga) in Colonial Cousins, and what I can say is that this man has a lot of talent that has yet to be uncovered in Tamil film songs. He may not be doing his best in Tamil songs considering that (a) many of the songs he's been assigned are crap (e.g., "Laila laila") and (b) time may be a constraint (he zips in and out of Madras from Bombay to do his recordings). But he definitely has a lot of potential. I had a chance to attend a recording of his in Bombay earlier this year. He was recording some ghazals for aging MD Naushad, and he was simply mesmerising. His rendition of "Mere dushman" in "Border" -- the song that has won him this year's National Award -- is superb, and the award well deserved.

  To me Hariharan and SPB are two different types of singers.SPB is definately more versatile and this could be due to the years of experience he has.Give Hari a few more years before anyone judges his true ability.
