For your information ,Semmangudi has great regard to IR and the only photo he has in his house paart from saints is IR .....
He is teh master of carnatic music and had deep music knowledge ......It is ahuge loss for us !!!
I don't think we will get carnatic musicians liek him who are totally dedicated ...

Great Soul. May God rest his soul in peace.
His demise is indeed very sad. When film Pithamagan is released sangeetha pithamagan is also released (from this earth).
Though he himself did not venture into cine-music, like singing MDing etc (if im not wrong), still he had good regards for good music. His association with MDs like IR is the proof of it.

The cycle of births and deaths, i.e., "Chaurasi" is never ending - the human body is a rare gift to the spirit entity and the faculties the human body is gifted with have no equals in any other creation, particularly for spiritual purposes - by leading an austere, disciplined, dedicated life such as that led by the late Semmangudi, one can elevate one's status spiritually
Semmangudi will forever be a shining example for all who want to know and realise the essence of leading a valuable existence

The article in chennaionline says that he set to tune many of Swathi Thirunaal kritis. do we still have the original tune set by Swathi Thirunaal or is Semmangudi's version the only one surviving?

Mumbai Ramki,
Hariharan's Fan's official page on his biography claims, at one period of time, he was practising 16 hours a day ( humanly un imaginable), I don't know how much true is this information, it just increased my respect to him, whom I always liked as a great Ghazal singer
Condolensces to the Master

When Ustad Bismillah Khan was ill, Hindu newspaper carried a frontpage article reporting his condition.
But when a carnatic stalwart like Semmangudi passed away I dont even find a prominent mention about it in North indian news papers like Times of India, Hindustan Times, NDTV etc.
I think it is the pyramidal attitude of life where Punjabis, marwaris, Gujjus and all other hindi belt people come first, then come the maharashtrians, biharis, orissa, bengalis and finnaly come the south people.
An art luminary such as Semmangudi deserves more than this!
Atleast for his age!
Most newspapers are talking about Kal Ho Na Ho, Ash, Big B, India Pak Hockey. What BS!

Fliflo had pointed to the link which says " Semmangudi had passed away".
since this is newtfmpage,Fliflo had made a pointer to A LINE in the article which says Semmangudi appreciated IR's music knowledge.

V: I don't know how much contact you have with north Indians you listed. On the average, a south Indian knows more about Hindustani music than a north Indian knows about Carnaric music. They seem to know about MS because of her Meera bhajans especially Hari Tum Haro. I don't know where you live. In US, I have noticed that very few NI attend Carnatic concerts. For some of them Carnatic music is just bhajans because it is mostly devotional. The newspapers simply reflect the preference of the people.

Hi all,
I live in Mumbai and I know for a fact that the newspapers here hardly carried any line on the demise of the doyen of Carnatic music. It's indeed said. Like someone has mentioned Bismillah Khan is recognised, rightly so, but not this great from south. He's the guru of MSS. He excelled in singing soul-stirring slow-tempo compositions especially of Muthuswami Dikshitar. One kriti he used to sing in kutcheris can never be forgotten....Sri Tyaaga Raaja Yoga Vaibhavam...
It's an outstanding composition bringing out the essence of Dikshitar kritis, descending order first and then ascending order. And the way Semmangudi used to sing it! May his soul rest in peace.

Ramaswamy,
I think last Dec 22nd, Semmangudi was felicitated at Shanmukhananda Hall in Mumbai for his contribution to music. Dont know exact name of the Sabha, something something Fine Arts Society it was.

Heartfelt Condolences.
His dedication and devotion to Carnatic music will always be remembered.
Semmangudi was an IR fan.....Next... I would not be surprised if another one comes out with a theory that he died heart-broken on seeing IR not getting too many opportunities these days.
Savangalai moikum eekaL!

Well. It's time for me to clarify about the link I posted before any further nasty comments are made. As we all know & feel, Semmangudi's loss is an irreplacable one. With the link, I further mentioned about a line on his appreciations to IR's music for the only reason that it's something to do with the TFM (as kodipangu ravi mentioned). When I did that I never thought that it can be extrapolated so badly and never thought one line with the link can hurt people so badly. Atleast for the sake of virtuous nature of the topic, please refrain from making marring & hurting comments.

Fliflo/kodipangu Ravi,
Please refer to the posts by Mumbai Ramki, Kupps, Anbe Sivam, rajasrnam (indirect reference) before my post. I don't have any objection to a link or a post. However, the tone and the regular sequence of the posts lead to a naive conclusion that Semmangudi's greatness had some link to IR. If you think that my remark was addressed to your post alone then you are choosing to ignore the string of other posts. And merely because this is a newtfmpage forum, we do not need to find a tfm link for all topics/posts, and definitely not an IR link for all topics/posts.

rajaG,
Thaks for explaining. I just happened to read some posts of other people whom you mentioned. More interestingly, the news published in various newspapers on Semmangudi's demise did not forget (invariably) to mention his links with IR. Conversely, I agree with you that it is probably a slip-up to talk that over and again here. Let all be in peace.

Cool it guys. I think the postors wanted to highlight his broad-mindedness in appreciating the leading lights of FM and thats why the reference to IR/ARR. That he's a doyen in his own right is universally accepted by one and all.
