KVM suffers recognition because many of his movies were assumed to be done by MSV; the same fate that faces Vali because of Kannadhaasan.
In the modern era, R. Sundararajan rediscovered KVM for TFM fans amidst the IR juggernaut of the 80s.
All the songs from "Andha Raaththirikku Saatchchiyillai" and "Thoongaatha Kannindru Ondru" were excellent. Perhaps due to their Telungu movie affiliation, KVM used SPB in most of his movies, especially in the 70s.
Just like the old responses here, I would like to bring to mind the classic song,"Nee Azhaiththathu Pol Oru Gnyaabagam" from "Thoongaatha Kannindru Ondru".
The song is set inside a moving train. The hero Mohan (probably a singer in this movie too) is travelling to get to his woman, Ambika. A music troupe travelling in the same train convince him to sing a song and Mohan pours his longing heart into this classic. The music, lyrics, and the great SPB's rendering are so good that they lull you. The violin interludes add a lot of anxiety to the tragic turn of events on the other end with Ambika since the song is jump cut repeatedly to cover both Mohan and Ambika's moods. The song is one of the best songs ever to lead up to a climax. The movie itself was much better than it was received by the public.

KVM also MD'ed the early 80's mega hit in telegu "sankarabaranam" - which fetched SPB his first best singer national award.

My all time favorite of KVM is
"UnnaiArindhal Nee Unai Arindhal Ulagathil Poradalam, Uyardhalum, Thazthalum Thalai Vanagamal Nee Vazhallaam"... Its from a MGR movie and have heard it many times on Madras Radio on Mondays 10 pm (the oldies I hour program !!!)...
When you get a chance listen to the innovative beats ... especially just before the first interlude ends and TMS starts singing ....all this done those days !!! This guy KVM did not get enough recognition , not as much as MSV got, I think KVM (Thirai Isai Thilagam) gave a lot of carnatic based songs.... Personally I think KVM has been ignored ... Sometimes sh** happens !!!!!

ramki,
I may be wrong. I remember one interview by
PS saying latha congrualted her for the song and said she could no way sing the way PS did.
so I thought tamil version was the first. If not so,
I will be sad to see my fav song from KVM, could not credited to him at all.

Hari the story was same but the song and tune is entirely different. 'unnai kaanadha kannum'was very much better than 'mera saaya saath hoga'song. In fact all the songs in Idhaya kamalam was very good compared to 'mera saaya'(im not sure who was the MD for 'mera saaya'-it could be

The MD for "Mera Saaya" was Madan Mohan a very great MD. But in this movie he lifted a song (Nainon mein badhra chaaye) from a telugu SJ hit.No doubt KVM's creations in IK were incomparable.."Malargal naninthana" is stunning with PS's great rendition and the brilliant interludes esp. the flute piece before the II stanza, "Ennathan ragasiyamo idayathile" by PS with haunting Sitar pieces.

nanri ramki/sriram lakshman. Now I can breathe
(just kidding). But I would have been really upset, if that song was a lifted tune.
Another fav song of mine from KVM - konji konji
pesi from the film kadhi kanniyarium - does it
a lift from his hindi source. I would appreciate the answer.

Are you sure that the MD for "Konji Konji" was KVM ? I thought it was Veda. Yes, this tune was lifted from Hindi ..sung by Lata ..meeti meeti bathon se bachna zaraa.

Easwaran & Sriram:
Kaidhi Kannayiram's MD is KVM and the song is a
lift as Sriram pointed out. This is one of those
rare movies by Modern Theatres for which Veda was
not the MD. When working with Modern Theatres,
the producer Sundaram usually forced the MDs to
lift a particular foreign tune that he wanted. So
the MDs (KVM, in this case) had no choice.

Hi all,
Some gems of KVM are: Vaanambadi (gangai karai thottam by PS, Yettil Ezhuthi vaithen by TMS with wonderful humming by LRE). My allt-ime fav. KVM duets are by TMS and PS from Annai Illam (madimeethu talaivaithu vidiyum varai thoonguvom) and kakkum karangal (Gnayiru enbathu kannaga, thingal enbathu pennaga, sevvai kovai pazhamaga, sernthe nadanthathu azhagaga) an outstanding song
extremely well sung in a stylish manner by both the all-time greats of TFM, TMS and PS
And who can forget KVM's music in all those APN mythological movies starring sivaji ganesan

Udhaya,
>>The movie itself was much better than it was received by the public.<<
what movie is this, please let me know?
I would say Shankaraparanam was the BEST of the great KVM, Thiruvarudchelvar & Thiruvizhaiyadhal comes next.

Raghu: I would definitely put Thiruvilayadal above Shankarabhranam as the latter had quite a few already famous Carnatic compositions which were no doubt very deftly handled by KVM. Thiruvilayaadal was in that sense entirely original. Also the range of singers: TMS, BMK, TRM, PBS, etc. in Thiru was quite amazing.
s.ramaswamy: have you listened to Chinanchiriya
from Kungumam? superb composition.

Dear RR,
I do agree about the Range of singers utilised by the veteran, KVM in thiruvilayadal!, but u c, it was not a carnatic based album, rather a devotional one, though obviously all the songs in Thiruvilayadal had carntaic influene in them, besides, you have to give full credit to the greatest SPB ji for his awsome rendertion of Sankaraparanam songs, in terms of complexity I would say Shankaraparanam was far more challenging than those of Thiruvilaiyadal & even the greatest IR's Sindhubhairavi, pls comment

Dear all,
some one please tell me the name of the movie & md for the song below, please?
1) Chinna Kannan azhaikiran - by the great Dr.BMK

thanks

Raghu: BMK has sung one more song in Kavikuyil
for IR, as of now, I cannot recall any other BMK song with music by IR.
As for Thiruvilayaadal, I might also add the great songs by KBS and also a lilting song by PS
(Neela Selai) plus another by SJ (with PBS).
Let the experts (I am not one) compare the two albums. Let us just say that Thiruvilayaadal is KVM's best T(amizh)FM album and Shankarabhranam his best T(elugu)FM album!! Both are great in their own ways!
