Today is SJ's birthday.
While wishing her a very happy birthday and pray for good health and cheer for years to come, I would like TFM to discuss some of her achievements. I saw some SJ topics discussed lately - but under this thread I think it would greater significance and will be a fitting tribute to a great singer on her birthday.
Let me begin with one perspective - SJ's contribution to IR's early success.
During the late 70s when IR came in, the TFM scene for female voice was undoubtedly dominated by PS and MD by MSV. And then came Annakili, Bhadrakali, Chittukuruvi... and the TFM world has never looked back since then. IR's early success was his strong BGM score for the songs and the lively presentation by the singers - SJ to be more precise. While IR used SJ very effectively, it would not be incorrect to say that SJ contributed a lot to make them immemorable. While leaving the topic to the forum's more worthy contributors, let me part with a sixer - do you remember the title song of "Katrinile Varum geetham" - kanden yengum ? you'll understand what I mean...

Pray the Almighty to shower all his blessings on SJ and wish her a Very Happy Birthday and Good Health. SJ though in the forefront after IR's entry, her oldies like Singaravelane Deva..,Intha Manrathil Odi varum.., etc. are her master pieces. The voice modulations and the classical renditions are a great achievement for one who has not undergone carnatic musical training.NenjinilE in UyirE at this age makes one admire at this great singer. SJ a Varaprasadam to TFM.

Yesterday, as I ws listening to the Singapore Oli Oli, for more than one hour I was enjoying the best songs of SJ( actually more than just sheer joy). The memory of the past, those childhood days full of SJ's beautiful songs. To day I feel that the coming generation will never again have the strong feeling towards music like those days. I still remember in those days people would sit by the radio to listen to IR's or MSV's hits. Espeacilly SJ's. Now TF Music is just something of a choice out of many. However we are lucky enough to have some of the most beautiful songs in SJ's voice. Thanks a lot to SJ for singing songs full of jeevan (what is correct word to say that she has put life in the songs rather than just singing).Of course thanks a million to God for giving such a voice to her. Thank you to IR for using her at the best. I think life will not be complete without SJ's songs. I am very fortunate to enjoy her songs. For some unknown reason there is a strong attachment to her voice and songs that I never had for any other singer in this world! She is simply the GREATEST of all.

While SJ was excellent in solos, her voice reached greater heights whenever there was a duet with SPB under IR's baton. I am compelled to list the following songs that enhanced my affection for SJ's voice:
a) Oru Naal unnodu oru naal (Uravadum nenjam)
b) Nenachchadhellam nadakkappora (-do)
c) Peraichchollava (Guru-T)
d) Parandhalum vida matten (-do-)
e) Engengo sellum (Pattakkaththi bhairavan)
f) Devadai (-do-)
g) Salaiyoram (PM)
h) Mani osai (-do-)
i) Isai medaiyil (Ilamaikkalangal)
j) Rojavaiththalattum thendral (N Nithya)
k) Aayiram Thamarai mottukkale (Alaigal Oyvathillai)
l) Raththiriyil pooththirukkum (Thangamagan)
m) Muththam pothadho (Enakkul oruvan)
n) Mounamana neram (Salangai oli)
......there are many more
And I would personally rate Sendhoorappoove, Azhagu malarada and Paada vaa among all time bests of TFM!
Of all the non-IR songs, Sippi Irukkudhu (MSV), Thookkam un kangalai (is it MSV-TR?), Adi ammadi (S-G) are among my favourites!

Eden, your point on SJ peaking with SPB under IR is 100% true. It instantly reminds me of all those numbers mentioned already, but also one Telugu song from Maharishi - "Konalo" - absolutely fantastic !!
Although by VS, I must say "Malare Mounama" must find itself listed amongst the great duets of SJ - what a team player !
