There was a muical program featuring KJY & SPB on a single stage. Orchestra was provided by, Lakshman-Sruthu, a supposed-to-be popular group in Madras.
But they hardly lived up to their reputation. They had barely 10 guys to take care of the instruments. Violin, Veenai, Sitar etc were simulated using keyboard. Violin esp was horrible. But their singers did well. A female singer sang in at least three different voices. They had not rehearsedin the audi before and hence the volume levels were too high.
SPB & KJY sang extremely well. Their choice
of songs were also good. There were only hit songs. SPB sang iLayanilaa, iLamaiyenum poongkaatru, enna saththam, maNNil intha, sangeetha jaathi mullai (best), oruvan oruvan muthalaaLi, shankarabharanam.... KJY sang
poovE sempoovE, anbukku naan adimai, viziyE kathaiezuthu, pachchaik kiLigaL thOLOdu (best) kaNNE kalaimaanE.... Both sang kaattuk kuyilu and iraNdu kaigaL together.
The same perfomance was done in Madras some time back. Did any of you TFM-ites get a chance to attend that? If yes, were Lakshman-Sruthi any different?

If I vaguely remember, it must be in 1997.
The concert was a great success, all the tickets were sold out, many people could not get tickets for that concert. I also remember that SPB & KJ were stuck in the crowd. The organizers thought that they would not show up on time, but surprisingly they showed up together on time.

Guys - This concert titled, "Legends in Concert" was held in both Singapore and Malaysia, last weekend. Unfortunately, I couldn't go and therefore am hoping for some newspaper reviews, which I will post here. Aravind should be able to give more details. In conjunction with the concert, there was an interview over Radio6, bits of which I listened. SPBala was heaping praises on KJJ. He recalled an incident where he recorded a song in his (SPB's) own voice and requested KJJ to sing the song, as he did not dare to "teach" KJJ how to sing the song. :-))) (I can't recollect the title of the movie but it had the enchanting melody, Vannam konda vennilavey.

The song In "Sigaram" was a super song - "Agaram Ippo Sigaram Aachu, Thagaram Ippo Thangam Aachu" - music by SPB and sung by KJY. Talk about a "dream team"!
By the way, the first KJY/SPB concert was held on August 24, 1997. "The Hindu" had a review of the show which could be seen at: hinduonline.com/hindu/daily/970829/09/09290706.htm

The concert was held in Singapore. It was organised by local company and the Radio Corporation of Singapore.
Photography, still and movie, was banned inside the auditorium. I saw a few official cameramen working throughout the programme. Normally when such programmes are held, the excerts are shown on the local TV after a couple of weeks. I think those cameramen belonged to that crew.
I do not know whether they plan to release a video cassette of the concert. If I come across such news, I would be more than happy to inform you.

In the movie PUTTHAM PUTHU PAYANAM, there is a chorus song "Paadunkalei Paadal Onru Paravaikalei..." sung by the four young heros. The singers in the movie include KJY, SPB, MV and Mano. In this song, the voices of KJY and MV can be easily identified. There is a third and possibly a fourth voice which is Mano and/or SPB.
As I got this song from a video, the identity of this voice could not be confirmed. If any of you
have this information, please let me know.
By the way, KJY never agrees to have his shows recorded or released in audio or video formats. One of his earlier Singapore shows was videotaped with a hidden camera and released illegally. He tried to block the sale of this without much success.

KJY will be in Chicago for a classical music program with three other top musicians from India on May 9. To me his Carnatic music shows are the best. After Dr. Balamuralikrishna, I will rate KJY as the best Carnatic vocalist.
About 35 KJY Carnatic CD titles are available.
His duet in "Ottam" with Sujatha is very beautiful. It is too bad that Sujatha is not given a lot of attention. The same song was sung in Hindi ("Daud") by KJY and Asha Bonslae. Sujatha sang the song much better than Asha.

According to information that I came across recently, KJY and SPB have recorded (at least) two
Kannada songs together. The two songs were listed as:
"Kiladi Jodi" and "Prema Preethi Nannusiru"
I wonder whether there are any Telugu songs that they have done together.

K.J. Yesudas and S.P. Bala did another one of their maga shows in Madurai, in front of a crowd of over 23000 fans. For details, see:

I think next to a Eden Gardens cricket match, this probably is the next best commercial venture!
This is one of the several music shows my memory can never own. As a school going kid, I remember having to only one and that was MSV' concert for our school. I did not care much for MSV's songs as much as I was lost in Illaiyaraja' music.
I think KJY has become pretty nostalgic, now that he lives in the US. I thin SPB and KJY are doing remarkable service for Tamil film music as they are sustaining the interest in the music of the 60s and 70s alive in the fast fading South Indian memory.
I pray and hope we see many more concerts like this and one is the US, here in Chicago will do me also great good. A benefit program for lost Indian music lovers, like me, in the US!!!

Nithin:
Even though KJY has a home in Florida and his family lives there, he stll spends a lot of time (if not most of his time) in India doing concerts
and recording music. Even though he has cut down the film music component of his recordings, he still sings for movies in all languages. In 1997, he sang great songs in the Hindi movies DAYRA and DAUD, among others. The major focus of his music is now on classical, spiritual and folk songs covering all religions, languages, cultures, etc.
I agree with you that KJY and SPB sharing the same stage is one of the most important and nostalgic musical experiences of the decade, if not the century. They transcend all barriers and are the real representatives of all of India. Together, they have won 13 national awards for best male vocalist during the last 20-odd years,
in over 5 languages.
BTW, a North American tour of the Star Night-98 show is still possible.
