  Friends - is released during Vishu (Malayalam new year during April 99) and has been termed a big hit. (Even I think so because for a movie without either of the big M's to run daily 4 shows for 40 days in Palakkad has to be a very big hit - the movie is still running at 4 shows a day).

  Desiya Geedham - I happened to see it yesterday. The movie is a good one, critically acclaimed, with a strong theme of patriotism and good performances by artists. But IR's music was highly disappointing. The movie gave IR the much needed rural-setup, and strong script..poondhu vilayaadiyirukalaam. The BGM as well the songs were disapointing. The movie might enter the hall of fame, but the music is trash and would never be remembered.

  Sitaram, I would appreciate if you could post the "excellent reviews in favor of the songs" of desiya geedham here. I very much saw the tamil movie - directed by Cheran, starring murali, rambha, naasar, vijay kumar & others, heard the songs myself and it was definitely not the IR stuff I long to hear.
  
  Raj, nice to see you back here. I'd classify desiya geetham in the same league as chinna durai and such album. I'd defnitely not like to remember IR for these albums.

  Chandy: Hard pressed for time, I want desparately to avoid any argument of any sort. But I felt DG was a decent album by Raja...better than Kaathalukku mariyathai and kaathal kavithai;-))
  My rating of recent IR albums would be:
  
  1.Poonthottam
  2.Kizhakkum Merkkum
  3.DG
  4.KM
  
  Naan vakkapattu is a real good melody and it sounded fresh. Why, even a certified new-ir-album-basher like..well,lets not take names...lets call him durvasar...even he gave a favorable review of the song;-))).
  The three Raja-rendered songs and the KJY song also impressed me. I dont know about BGM but I cant believe *it is trash*.
  And certainly, not in Chinnadurai class. This time I cant be kidded by being told"Hey!Listen, have u heard chinnadurai". I have heard it and it is trash...unworthy of comparison with DG. Hmm...I feeel nice enough to be back here too...only,I am hard pressed for time:(((

  I just got hold of "friends" malayalam movie and listened only couple of times, "Thanga kina" by Yesudas and Chithra is just mesmerising , very good instruments and chours , real IR stuff. "Punnaga Poovil" by chithra is very good number. "Kadal Kaatril" two versions one by Yesudas and one by Sujatha, I liked Sujatha's version very very much. Let me come back with more detailed review soon after giving some more listening.

  Thanga kina pongal is really nice.. But my fav is the " Punnaga puvil " by chitra n " Shivamalli poove ".. Watch for the elctric guitar at the first interlude.
  
  Really great Album by IR - Which again makes me wonder why IR always comes up with a mallu album far better than contemporary tamil albums.??
  Mallu directors inspire more than our tamil directors entangled in the kaadhal.XXX formula,???

  Regarding ANTHAPURAM (telugu). i saw the video and it was really sad to see IR's breakthrough songs picturised so casually, should say with a scant regard. In other words, IR gave 100 fold more than what the director/producer was capable of justifying in the movie. Even the movie as a whole was a waste. i wonder if someone said that the movie was a hit. If it was, it must have been only for the songs and the track ; IR was at his polite best. Why does IR waste these songs on such poor producers.

  I do agree, IR has tried just something different in "Shivamalli poove" and chithra is also at her best, though the initial lines reminds us "Poo vaadai kaatru", the instrumentation is just too good , It is amazing IR is able to give some original and unique tunes even after 700 movies which is some thing great. Sujatha is just too good in "kadal Katril" song.
