ellaam vizhalukku iraiththa neer. Just happened to see the movie. One of the most pointless, senseless movies in TF history. Old story, familiar incidents (screenplay), lenghty, self-praising and stero-typed dialogues, childish direction (all villians in the same room in the climax???)...... despicable movie. Why should IR undertake such stupid movies?
Nevertheless, BGM in Soundarya-Parhi scenes is amazing, as someone in this forum already mentioned. Esp the scene when Soundarya rushes to Parthi's house to propose AND the scene immediately before that. The less said about the songs, the better.

The less said about the songs, the better (except Sudha's songs and 'appidi paakkiradhunnaa')

illannu mattum solliraadheenga avvaLavu dhaan pichchiruvom pichchi :-))
Nagas,
neenga Ramana paaththaachcha? b'lore chance irundhirukkaadhae - mds vandheengaLaa. i saw it in AVM Rajeshwari theatre and i felt the BGM was very good.
The problem is nowadays IR is not doing BGMs with familiar instruments like what he did in Mouna Raagam, Dhalapathy, Guna etc., but makes it more WC oriented. Is it a reason for you to think so?

Kupps,
I saw it in TN ... Bangalore-kku innum varlai padam ...
I don't know whats missing in RamaNa BGM, But I felt I didn't see IR's contribution at all to the movie - only two songs present (both 'average', I would say) and BGM is not something which made me enjoy the movie more, May be I didn't notice properly - But for me, the whole movie looks blank as far as music is concerned (ofcourse, some pieces were enjoyable = KuRippaa antha kuzanthiakaL patRiya flashback kaatchila IR-oda kuRumbaana BGMs ;-)
BTW, This doesn't mean the movie is bad - I would say its one of the best action movies made in recent times with excellent screenplay - could be the 'life-saver' for Vijaykanth (finally !)

Following Saran's posting, I now post this for those who have not come across this column of Sir John Scott, the RPO conductor of IR's symphony. Others who have read this, please bear with me.
----------------
John Scott's Column
As time permits, John Scott will answer your questions and have the answer posted here. This week's question comes from Anbu Ramasamy:
Mr. Scott,
I think you are one of the best composers around & my mission now is to go out and get all your CDs. Please keep composing & keep releasing your music.
The question I have is somewhat involving you and another person. I was thrilled when I heard that you were going to conduct the symphony for Mr. Ilayaraja from India when he was commissioned to write a symphony. Mr. Ilayaraja is my favorite Indian composer & I couldn't believe my ears when I came to know another one of my favorite composers (you!) was going to conduct it. There was a huge celebration for him in India with all the top personality & you honoring Mr. Ilayaraja. This was shown in the tele & I was ecstatic to see you on stage. As you were being garlanded on stage, I also happened have your CD 'John Scott's Favorites' gracing my glass cupboard with you in front. I so excitingly pointed out to my family members 'there that's him' & they really couldn't believe as well.
But till now, this symphony has not been released & there hasn't any news about it. I hope you can enlighten about its release & the work of Mr. Ilayaraja.

---------
Dear Anbu (Singapore),
Thank you for your very kind comments. I am a very lucky person because I spend my life doing what I like, which is composing music.
It was very interesting to hear that you witnessed the Ilayaraja honoring ceremony on TV. I was flown from London to Madras specially for it. It was an incredible experience and I shall never forget it. Ilayaraja and I became very close friends and I have tried to encourage him to get his symphony released. I believe he was hurt by a critics review, and this is the reason it has not been released. I had the privilege of conducting the recording sessions with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, in London, and we all believe it deserves to be released. The trouble is that critics are capable of destroying sensitive artists and have done it throughout the history of music. The more one knows a piece of music the more one loves it, and the stupid critics are incapable of judging anything they have never heard before. They have seldom been right. There is a wonderful book by Nicolas Slonimsky entitled LEXICON OF MUSICAL INVECTIVE. It is a history of musical criticism since Beethoven's time. It shows how the critics have crucified every great composer without exception! I will contact Illayaraja and tell him about your kind remarks and that he owes it to us all to make his symphony available.
I send you my best wishes,
-SD- John Scott

ROYAL PHILHARMONIC TO PERFORM INDIAN COMPOSER'S
WORK
MADRAS, India, July 11 (Reuter) - Britain's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will for the first time record a work written by an Indian, relatives of the composer Ilayaraja said on Sunday.
"It's a proud moment for Tamils and indeed all Indians," Ilayaraja, a popular music director for Tamil films, told reporters in the southern city of Madras.
His composition, "Grand Symphony Number 1" is a fusion of Indian and western music but is written for a symphony orchestra without Indian instruments.
Ilayaraja said the recording of the work in London would begin this month. The result would be distributed internationally.
"Despite his very humble origin and lack of formal education in western music, Ilayaraja has acquired a deep knowledge of western instruments and has learnt how to use them after painstaking study," said Handel Manuel, Director of the Madras Philharmonic and Choral Society.

I was listening to Hay Ram. What a wonderful songs! What a mix of instruments and vocal! I'm hearing the songs after an year. The songs are still fresh, conveys so much feelings and emotions.
Just this one album is well enough to understand how versatile Raaja is. May it be western or eastern, Pop or Folk, Hindustani or Carnatic. Only Raaja can give the perfect blend of a meaningful song with emmotions, melody.
No doubt why Raaja still stays ahead of all others and any other most popular will only be the next best.
