Rajaa is NO WHERE near his 1000th movie.
Nayagan was his 400th movie. After that
he would have scored another max 100-150
movies. I haven't seen any ad for his 500th.
I think he is very close to announce his retirement
from Film Music and do some experimental
music in GNANA MARKAM.

Maestro's 500th film was Anjali. After that he has scored music for atleast 200 to 250 films (note : Anjali was released in 1990). Now with "siraichchaalai" he has about 725 or so films completed.

Yejaman was his 700th movie. It came in 93/94.
As a side light - Two of the biggest musical hits in Kannada last year were from Ilayaraja: nammoora mandhaara hoovE and gulabi :)

Is IR getting close to his 1000th movie? Does anyone know the milestones/landmark achievements, other than those discusses in TFM?
Is it true that IR is in the Guiness BWR?
Has MSV already composed music for 1000 films?
Please enlighten. Thank you.

last year. 1000 mark is very near for him..

Kurumban!
IR & MSV did music together for a few films which carried both their names in the credits..e.g. mella thirandhadhu kadhavu..To my knowledge IR hasn't worked as MSV's asst. He has worked with GKV as asst, though! (I just got reminded that OTOH when MSV got into some real financial trouble, he had worked together with IR -without credits- in a few movies. One e.g. is Chinnavar. For the `andhiyile vAnam' song, the recording is conducted by none other than the legendary MSV, which was even shown on a TV program on DD!)

Sabesan!
The list by film news Anandhan of IR's 730 movies or so (I got downloaded from a Danish site) has the Bloodstone included in the list!
bb!
It may not be a coincidence! He always took special care, IMO, of his x00th movies. Few more in that list:
100th : Moodupani
200th : Ayiram nilavE vA
300th : Udhaya geetham
Of late, I observe that he has started taking up assignments with a kind of renewed vigor..knowing his prolificity, it may be much earlier than 20 years... (One reason could be the gossiped about `financial trouble', which he might try to overcome by signing up all and sundry! Dinakaran site says he advised the Sethu director to grab whichever offer that comes his way and not be too choosy, as the film world is full of uncertainties and things may not be as bright later!)

Eden, you are wrong. Only IR was shown on the DD while conducting the Chinnavar song, I remember it very well.
By the way, can anybody tell me how many films are MDed by MSV so far - MSV and MSV-TKR combo.

I agree with Venkatesh. Only IR + orchestra was shown in the programme. I remember IR shouting to a violinist "yEn mundhurE ?". I was wonderng how he could findfault with a particular violinist in the flock, when, for an ordinary listener like me could not see any !

Venkatesh & MS!
Probably we are refering different TV programs here! I'm sure I've seen MSV giving `rhythm', as they call it in filmy circles (i.e. waving the hand without baton), while Mano was singing `andhiyile vAnam'! (It was probably shown on a festival day..say Deepavali or Pongal or sth like that in a special program. A colleague of mine captured the program on his VCR and organised a special `show' for me, 'cause I'm not a regular TV viewer and one with a decision not to kill time by having one at home).
In the same program BR was demonstrating how important IR's BGM is for him -by showing one specific scene in mudhal mariyAdhai with & without BGM, is it the same thing you're both refering?

Eden,
Yes, I was referring to the same DD program on a Diwali day (abt 8 yrs back), including BR's views on flute-based BGM in Mudhal Mariyadhai and IR wielding his baton for the 1st interlude (terrific violins!) of andhiyilE vAnam song.

I remember now. Yes. I saw this program and bought the cassette and it turned out that Andhiyilae vaanam was the only song worth listening. Thankfully I over wrote the cassettes with some other songs later.

I can second(or third or whatever) Venkatesh on that! That program had ONLY Raja 'waving the baton' and yes, he did point out to the one violinist mundhifying while playing the famous piece in the Andhiyile vaanam song!
And the only other famous people that the clip showed was Mano&Swarnalatha! ( and Gangai Amaran?? I am not sure about this though!)
And I am guessing that the Bharathiraja segment was about the flute piece when Ranjani&the 'other guy' run on the sand towards the sun ( Personal opinion: I had no clue what BR was raving about in that scene and its a wonder Raja even got inspired to come out with that lovely flute bit!)

MSV has done RR for IR for the movie 'vidinjA kalyanam'. I think it was a Diwali release and the producer was in a tight spot due to lack of time, like the title itself. MSV at the request of IR, has helped him. He told this in an interview.

IQ,
The 1st Mariyadhai BGM is an excellent one, one of IR's best, I would say. It comes when Deepan finds about Ranjani's death and throws his flute up which is shown as frozen in the air. Then all the ensuing happenings / rituals are shown thru-out this BGM, which is captured aptly by the camera. The melancholy of the flute brings out the pathos for this situation so effectively!

IR did not score music for BLOODSTONE. I saw the movie last week on DVD and I did not see any credits to IR. This is still a mystery because I saw the movie in India long time back and I remember to have seen IR's name in the titles.

Hello Folks ,
The story is here is not on Illayaraja will
hit his 1000 movies .but if his competitors will
ever reached half of the amount he composed.
Remember Rahman reached barely 100 and there
is comments on his repetition in his composition
, Deva 200 movies..no comments ..you all know him better.MSV about 300 ++ and lost in thin air.
But Raja 786th movie Hey Ram is talk of the town,
city , grammam...all the world where indian leave.
The thing I find in IR is he still fresh like in
AnnaKilli and 16 Vayathelee.
Remember his word 'I can teach people to play
music and I can teach them to compose because it
should come in the blood'
That speak for all.Composing for one movie is
doing the songs and the background music for
2 hours movie . Now you can multiply with 786
and it all happen within 25 years. That is about
30 movies a year and or 2 or 3 movies a month and
sound still refresh.
Vintage Raja..! and Incomparable..!
Bless you..
