  A concise answer to your question--Each to his/her own. This TFM page is rich in content because of our diverse interests and styles, which mix old with new, carnatic analyses with western influences, polite replies with funny ones etc. I actually find the mix of new and old to be refreshing and balanced. I figured discussion of the new is inevitable, so why not contribute to the old like the SPB/KJJ/Kannan lists etc. You start a pudhu paadal topic, and I'll be happy to participate (if I know about it.)
  
  FYI, I've actually asked a question about a relatively new song under the Carnatic Raga topic--makes you feel better?

  In fact I love old songs than new songs(except IR's songs) because I am ardent fan of Ilayaraaja. But, the problem is that I do not remember all the movies of the old songs. I think songs interest a person than movies. And personally I feel that. So, my suggestion would be if the discussion is more music oriented than movie oriented, it would be interesting to everyone and of course everyone can participate.
  
  And I think I have heard only one or two songs out of the list you have given. Were all the songs listed very popular?

  I enjoyed most of the songs listed in Kanchana's list but am unsure of the origins.
  
  New Query: Anyone knows the background of the song "Amuthey Thamizhey, azhagiya mozhiyey" Beautiful song. I only know MD is IR. Who are the singers, the composer, movie and other related info welcome.

  The song azhage thamizhe...is a great song from the movie 'kovil pura'.
  It has P. Susheela as one of the singers. If I recall right the other is Shailaja. There is a male voice too, who sings a single line. I am not sure who this is.
  
  Interestingly, most tamil songs(the above song included) in their verses have at some point the word 'thamizh'. For example:
  1. pillai thamizh
  2. thamizh paatu
  3. thamizh magal
  4. sen thamizh ....etc...
  
  I did not myself realize this fact but some of my Kanada and Telugu friends pointed this out to me. If you listen to any other language their lyrics seldom have the words Telugu, Kanada, Hindi, Marathi...etc.
  They infact accused tamils as being fanatics over language and that is the reason we use 'tamizh' in most of our songs.
  My reply was that the concept 'tamizh' is more than the language itself. It is frequently used as a 'cultural/group identity' thing than a language thing. For example in the song "adhikaalai malare, alangara chudare puthu ragam nee paada vaa..." in Urudhi Mozhi there is line in which the guy sings " ...Unai paada mudiyamal thamizhum thalai kuniyum..." at the end of the 2nd stanza. Again earlier he sings " enai aallum thamizhe.."

  In Amuthe thamizhe,
  The other female singer(apart from susheela) is Uma
  Ramanan.
  This song is set to a rare scale S R1 G3 P D2.
  Anyone know the name of this raga? In the
  raga-filmsong list, it appears under Rasika ranjani.
  
  There is another song in this scale.
  "neelakkuyile unnodu thaan"(magudi)
  
  p.s. In Sathiya keerthi's answers, "vallavanukku vallavan"

  You are right. Song 1 is from Kuamrik kottam. There is one more good song from that movie -

  First half is by LRE, starts slowly and reaches
  the peak(and stops)then TMS starts from the peak

  and brings down to the end of bell shape of a
  normal curve.
  The song was picturized in Vaigai Dam.
