Hi
I would like to know if Mahalakshmi is a south indian singer.
I've heard in the last ARR albums as well as in Hey Ram and IMHO she's very very good...
What do you think of her?

She is indeed a South Indian. Mahalakshmi Iyer is her full name, and is based in Mumbai.
Her career is slowly picking up both in Madras and Mumbai moviedom(I hate those words, Kollywood and Bollywood...) and she is working with IR, ARR and Shankar Mahadevan.

Some Questions to Mahalakshmi:
1. ====> I made it a point to learn to read and write Urdu, even joined Urdu classes at St Xavier's College, Bombay.
Have u taken any pains to learn something about your mother-tongue?
2. ===>has developed from listening to a wide range of music from Western artistes like Barbara Streisand, Whitney Houston and Stevie Wonder to the abhangs of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, and Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Geeta Dutt, Mehdi Hasan and Ghulam Ali.
Have u not listened to anyone below the Vindhyas???
A comment:
Though it is sad that your songs are being dubbed by big-names(whis is big now? ALka is it??), be happy that you are not in the era of Latas..

Balaji,
Well said... I wish she pays attention to any language that she sings in. It's the Tamil MDs who should insist on clarity of diction. But, who cares? All they need is a NEW voice.
BTW, which song is she referring to in Lagaan?
Are all songs (except the Bhajan type by Lata and the Megha song where the film director's wife has lent her voice) sung by Alka Yagnik?
I read somewhere that it was Aamir Khan who insisted that Rahman take Alka and Udit.
Another guy who keeps reccommending Alka to ARR is Subhash Ghai (though she is not ARR's favorite)
Yesterday it was Lata who 'OVERWROTE other's files'. Now is it Alka's turn, as she has become Senior? Somethings never change in HFM I guess.
Also, in the interview she says that she was apprehensive of singing a carnatic based song for "RAJAJI" (IR), but finally managed to do justice to it ..something like that.... She is probably referring to 'MeettAtha oru veeNai' from 'Poonthottam', set to Reeti GowLa ragam.
Guess what a reviewer says of Mahalakshmi's song, 'Yaar Teri Bewafayee Ka' (Film: Love You Hamesha), a female version of SPB's original, 'Minnale' from May Madham:
"Her singing is better suited to chorus numbers where her weaknesses can be masked. Here she does an average job but isnīt really offered the challenge to rise to the occasion. Lyrics are bland and semi angry, and apologetic at the same time. The music is ok, but nothing original, like the other tracks weīve heard it before. It tries to blend semi western influences with eastern influences and the result isnīt too great. The composition tends to be racy and then mellow in an uneven pace and it has a trademark Rahman stamp on it. Overall itīs not really worth listening to..."
Well, with such 'well-wishers' as critics, she really has a long way to go before she can come to the main league. I can only feel sorry for the girl.
Though her rendering of the song is not quite in the league of SPB's version, I'd say she has done a very decent job. The composition itself is so powerful, one of my all-time favorites of ARR.
And these guys who have absolutely no understanding of music become critics and put down such good efforts so easily!!! No wonder mediocrity rules in HFM these days!!!
