there have been several great MD's inthe past like KMV,VM,GR and in the present too we have many MD's like deva arr, ir etc.now which
MD's songs are going to predominantly last over the next century.or which MD's songs have that
freshness or melody that is going to make their numbers immortal?now every MD would have atleast a few songs thatare excellent, but who's
going to have the max. no of songs?i'll write about this after i receive the initial responses.

Vijay,
I feel both MSV and IR will stand the test
of time. I fell ARR is just a passing phenomenon !
(ARR Fans Mannithuvidungal !) Who knows ! Probably
mid 21st century teenagers may go gaga over IR
songs and may even have a cult built around him.

I think Vijay means the songs that are going to be given in future. If it were that songs composed already, then there is no competition for IR.
Assuming that the following will be in competition
IR
ARR
DEVA
SIRPI
KARTHIK
YUVAN
No doubt, Deva will be composing the Max no. of films per year, Max no. of Junks per year, Max no. of Xeroxes per year. At his best, however he may be ignored of copying, he can give around 5 to 10 hit songs an year.
If ARR comes out of his cream circle ( Mani, Shankar, Kunjumon, Other Mega Budget Producers) and produces good songs without relying on the budget of the film and the quality of directors and artists, he will be a contender. I have a doubt, some of ARR fans clarify. Has ARR given a hit for a film which is neither a big budget film nor a film occupied by cream directors/Artists? I will list his hits. A * will indicate a big budget film.
ROJA - MANIRATHNAM / KB *
GENTLEMAN - KUNJUMON *
THIRUDA THIRUDA - MANIRATHNAM *
ANJALI - BALACHANDAR
KAADHALAN - SHANKAR, KUNJUMON *
KILAKKU SEEMAIYILE- BARATHIRAJA
INDHIYAN - SHANKAR, KAMAL *
MUTHU - RAJINI *
KARUTHTHAMMA - BARATHIRAJA
MAY MAADHAM (1 SONG) - G.V.PRODUCTIONS
KAADHAL DESAM - KUNJUMON * *
RATCHGAN(1 SONG) - KUNJUMON
Also songs in these films failed in spite of being big budget ones or hi tech people.
LOVE BIRDS - *
MR. ROMIYO - *
IRUVAR - MANIRATHNAM -( FIRST TIME IN HIS CAREER , SONGS FAILED)
RATCHAGAN - KUNJUMON
( EX. 1 SONG)
PAVITHRA - G.V.PRODUCTIONS
If ARR still depends on such things, in future when there comes a decline to such people, it will affect his future.
Sirpi can be ruled out as his era ended almost with "Ullaththai Alliththa". When a MD feels that this is my best movie in the life, there ends his confidence. So is the case of Sirpi.
Whether Karthik or Yuvan will click? Time is the adjudicator. I am not able to project.
I do not want to write ILAYARAJA off. In Vikatan he recently gave an interview saying, I am going to give more than what I gave so far. I believe him. Also immediately after 2 months, Kaadalukku Mariathai came and suppressed all films in 1997. But still Time is the jury.

thanx to krishnan and sathya for posting.i too echo almost the same opinions.i feel some numbers from GR ,KMV and MSV like 'unnai kaanatha kannum kannalla','chithiram pesuthudi' and 'senthamizh thenmozhiyaal' are definitely going to be liked by even the next generation.but perhaps the max. no would go to IR.from the initial opinion which i draw of KR and yuvan,i do not think that their numbers would even be remembered for a few years.but i hope optimistically that at present they are just dancing to the tune of the producers and once they gain a strong foothold they are going to launch themselves in full force and bring out their best.i think the same should happen to vidyasaagar.i do not want to talk about the rest.
another important factor is that most of us are able to appreciate olden day songs better since we associate nostalgic feelings with that song.that would definitely be missing in the next century.our kids might be listening to IR's music without having any knowledge about him ,without having any nostalgia just like any other MD and if they still like his music irrespective of who is reigning the music world at that time, then perhaps that would be a great achievment.

What an excuse for karthik raja!!I find this amusing among IR fans that they may bicker about ARR's songs as to english kalappadams and cheap western beats but nobody says a word about karthik raja. People should hear ullasam and naam iruvar namakku iruvar before complaining about ARR.

Karthik, do not get tentioned. As far as the current gen musicians are concerned ARR is the best. Also honestly I do not have any idea about Karthik Raja's potential. Also I do not have the practice of listening western composings. I know neither ARR's liftings nor Karthik's liftings or even IR's liftings(If any). As an IR fan I always defend Raja and not Raja's sons. Nor my idea is that since my fav. is IR, his sons have to suppress ARR. I have no idea about other IR fans.

I share Sathiyas view. I am not in favor of KR or YSR just because they are IRs sons. There have been lot of postings criticising KR and YSR. No body supports them as they support IR. They are just coming up. So Karthik, if you say that u have
never seen a word against KR then you must read all the postings

karthik,
i think u have missed my posting in which i hae a written a few lines about KR.what i have said is that KR's initial films are not good enough and i hope that they(music in films) would become better once KR gets a strong foothold in the industry.as for using english words in songs none of the present day's MD's are an exception to this .even IR has oh baby in KM.
but the trendsetter was ARR.

Just watch the program colgate "sabthaswarangal"
a successful show that compleated a year in SunTV.
Its only for resonably talented singers and
also needs knowledge in music for later rounds.
you can see about 70% of the songs that
are sung by them is by illayaraja. mostly from
80's. you see see how his songs stands the time...
But in other shows where common people are
asked about thier fav MD, the answer comes
a arr mostly.. thats because thats the only md
the know!

kumar,
i agree with u completely.today's MD's songs lack the staying power.in their attempt to sound more like ARR they have also started copying from western tunes and try to mix it with the traditional south indian music and it results in
'half boiled' songs most of the time.vidyasaagar has impressed me with a couple of songs. 'vaa saki' has a beautiful blend of western and carnatic music and has a brought a certain amount of freshness with it.this song is the only one which i would put on par with KM songs or yaathramozhi songs of IR.but vidyasaagar has to be consistent and has to choose his films carefully in order to be successful.

Well, if people like Bach, beethoven etc stood the test of time then IR will stand too. His compositions are still giving nightmares for its sophistication and complexity, probably the future generation ,may be more sensitive and start hearing IR's song for its beautiful orchestration and perfection.Any way IR was way ahead of time.

Except for Sangamam I can't think of any ARR's non big budget/director film. He needs to work with directors like seran,Vikraman, agathiyan etc to prove that he can do any kind of music. Till then he has to be contented with being the best among the current crop. He has a long way to go before he has a shot at the bigger league where IR is the undisputed king(Please , I am not a Hardcore IR fan though I adore his music).
