ARR, IR, Bavatharani, Ranjith Barot ...

Is there something in common between these four? Well yes! Remember Vande Mataram? No. not the original one, the one ARR did for Sony music, IR did for Kalapani, Bav. Did for her Independence day release Album, and Ranjith Barot's second version of Vande Mataram!
The query is who has the best version of VM in terms of:
1. Music
2. Which has made more impact on people( not the lyrics but the music)
Don't consider how the lyrics rouses patritism but do consider how the song itself makes you patriotic!

I haven't heard RB and Bhava's VM.
Coming to IRs and ARRs VM,
the essential difference between IR and ARRs VM is that they belong to different periods.
Kaalapani VM's situation is pre-independence days. The song is meant for those people who belonged pre-independence era.
So according to the movie (and the lyrics) the objective of the song is to invoke patriotism amongst the people and make them fight for freedom.
The music also has a tinge of sorrow and sadness as though mourning for those died fighting for freedom.
That way ,the impact of the song must have been high if sung in those times.
Musically, it's one of the good pieces of IR.
On the other hand , ARRs VM is for celebrating 50'th year of independence and the lyrics ,as opposed to Kaalapani VM , doesn't ask you to fight for freedom nor invokes patriotism bcos it mainly praises mother india and doesn't talk about freedom struggle or mourn for those died in the struggle for freedom.
It's a happy song celebrating the 50'th year of Indian independence.
According to me , Kaalapani VM makes me more patriotic bcos the music is very serious and it certainly doesn't make u dance. rather it reminds u of the agony and pain behind the war of independence. It makes U feel for those who died in the struggle.
Arr's VM for me is just another pop album. frankly, i listened to the song, i liked it very much and that's about it.For me Petta rap and Arrs Vm r the same, yet another "enthu " song in my collection.
But kaalapani VM joins the list of patriotic songs like indiya naadu en veedu, thamizha thamizha and the real VM itself.
on a lighter note,
Junior,
i appreciate ur skill of making the query in such a way that people select ONLY arrs VM.
jus kidding ;-)))

Does anybody have more info on Ranjit Barot. Was he part of a rock group in Bombay? If this info is available in the archives, any pointers? Thanks

I agree with Shankar that IR's and ARR's VMs belong to different peiods. But I found IR's VM better because of its highly inspiring first interlude, which is totally different from whatever I have heard. Of course, I liked "Thamizha thamizha" of Roja far better than ARR's VM, it inspired much more patriotism than VM. So Junior, if you consider this song in your list, maybe I may vote for it ahead of IR's VM.

Hi,
Raja:
Ranjit Barot, a bombay based composer who has done many advt tracks.
You can see him playing the drum in Maaza mangoe ads( the guy with the beard)
Also he is a great drum programmer, in humma humm he has programmed the drum parts.
He has also done many albums. Works pretty hard to give hi-quality drum patterns. Many ARRs drum patterns are from him.

IR's Vandemaataram wins! It is certainly much more patriotic and is musically far superior. ARR's Maa Tujhe Salaam is musically not very appealing, though recorded well. The Vande Maataram song sung by Sujatha was better than this. But of course, that is not Rehman's composition. He has colored it well with Sax and Keyboards.

Ranjit Barot is the same guy who did the music for "VIP"; the movie credits just mentioned Ranjit. He also used to be quite active on the jazz circuit in Mumbai with Louis Banks etc.

as kaushik says, if the topic is expanded to
what induces maximum amount of patriotism,
it is not IR or ARR or Bav. IMHO, it is an old
song "endru thaniyum indha sudhandhira dhaagam",
from "kappalottiya thamizhan". the scene is
when VOC is in his death bed and is still
thinking about a free india. the lyrics of
bharathiyar adds fire to the song. it will
easily surpass the moods created by "thamizha
thamizha" and "vande mataram".

I totally agree with Balaji. endru thaniyum indha sudhandhira dhaagam is a very rich song that kindles the emotions of listeners. Even today, old people in India may weep when they sing this song. Several years ago, my great grand mother who was 85 sang this song and wept when we asked her to sing a song from the past.
