HI,
MSV - Melisai Manner - King of Light Music..
He was the trend setter to the TFM industry..
(1300 movies is not a joke, one needs a real creativity to complete 1300 movies in thier lifetime.)
1. He was one of first person who introduced light music in the TFM, before him it was carnatic music oriented.
2. He was the first person to mix real hard core classical ragas with light..Each raga he used he has given variations,
Neeym nanuma in Gauravan set to charukesi...
- Unai ondru ketan -- a love song on Thilang
"Nala dour veenai seidhen - " a classical no in thilang..
3. He has created song with very minimal instrument.
infact - Poonal pogatum poda - still holds the record for minimum number of instruments.
He also holds the record for song with maximum instruments...the famous "enge nim matheee.."
4. He is the fastest composer till now. He was able to complete all the songs of
"ulagum strum valliban" in a week...
(he has withstood presure of MGR, SIVAJI, JAISHANKER AND directors like Panthulu, Bheemsing, KB, Sridhar -and given them as promised)
5. He has done a song of KB with mimicry...
"Kadaul Amithu whytha medai"
This song has the record of maximum time taken to record this song - 21days...
6. Sippi irukuthu muthu irukuthu---A real time composing with kavingar...this song is master piece..
7. He has composed for all most all the Lyricsits
around (tune for lyrics - pretty tough job for the present composers)
He has done many things that present days musician can refer to ..
Besides movies the Krishna ganam is known to all tamil speaking folks around the world
While typing this I am hearing a song in Radio6-Fm (Yamuna nadthee enge----A master piece from MSV) it is a light love song with a mixure of Sriranjini - Abogee...
The backup vocals of Spb when P.Suseela sings the lead - he is the one who introduced back up vocals
in TFM..
Next song is from Taxi Driver -->
in mayamalawa gowlai and nadamakriya--
"Sugam mana sinthaiel"
Take any raga our man has a number in that...
A real genius...
..To be continued

Srikanth:
I heard he has scored only for about 175 movies!
Are you sure that MSV did music for 1300, since at that old times, only very few movies were made in an year. Please clarify.
Also I have heard (not sure) that IR was in the Guiness book of World Records for scoring music for the higest number of movies (around 500 I guess) ?

One of the greatest contribution of this master to TFM is
introducing us to all the fancy latin, african percussion
instruments. I strongly believe he is the king of rhythm in
Indian film industry.

HI ,
I AM VERY SURE HE HAS DONE MORE THAN 1000 MOVIES ---
IN ALL THE SOUTH INDIAN LANGUAGES...
(175 FOR THE GREAT MASTER---THATS WHAT I TOLD THIS DISCUSSION GROUP HAS MORE BLIND IR FANS)
(175 MIGHT BE SIVAJI MOIVES ALONE)

I have heard MSV scored music for 1300 movies or so. I have also heard that his 1000th movie is
Amara Deepam. Not too sure if its right

1200+ films?
As a BLIND calculation:
1 year = 60 films
1300 films = 20years * 60films
I don't think TF industry produced 60 films every year in the 60's to 70's?

HI,
MSV TENURE WAS NOT 20 YEARS - 40+YEARS
- 1958 TO 1990 ( he still COMPOSED FOR movies (Religious movies by K.Shanker etc...)
KULEBAGAVALI WAS HIS FIRST MOVIE -1958.
I WILL CONFIRM about the year
Kula potta nawabu was his first song...
More films was were produced during 1960-75
than today... later - the film distributers brought many Restrictions
MSV has had 10-15 films for deepavali realease.
in 1960's
He has done 1300 movies....

We are BLIND(!?), so go and see the archive posting 'HOW FAR IS THIS TRUE?"
In that Satya keerthi gave the statistics about the number of films of MSV.
Before IR 180+ and After IR 180+ films.
So total is 360+ films.
What happen to the remaining 1000?
I think you can only see the 1000, because we are BLIND (?!) :)))))
Thanks

In my opinion, MSV's creativity lies in the aspect of tuning for written lyrics. athaavathu, ezuthiya paattukku mettamaiththal. Be it aththaan ennaththaan.. or vizhiyE kathai ezuthu... He is the first to tune for a bunch of puthukkavithaigaL in agni saatchi, great job. Vaali wrote about MSV in his book poikkaal kuthiraigaL like oru vilaivaasip pattilaukkuk kooda unnaal mettamaikka mudiyum. I feel the same about MSV..
Sometime during 70s, there were radio programs about MSV's creativity on Cylon radio. I remember one episode: MSV has used the same raga for a sOga song and for duet song. Listen to sumaithaangi saainthaal..sumai enna aagum of Thangappathakkam and pottu vaiththa mugamO of Sumathi en sundari May be there are a lot in this category by MSV. Experts pl share the details..

On a second thought, MSV has tuned for a puthukkavithai even before agni saatchi. It is from oru indiyak kanavu, Komal's film. The song is en pErE enakku maRanthupOna intha vanaanthiraththil.., puthukkavithai by VM.

My knowledge in ragas is zero, so I cannot comment on MSV's usage of ragas. But the following songs, IMO reflect MSV's creativity and his ability to produce popular and different songs in his time. It is a plain crude observation from a ignorant listener's point of view and it may not reflect any technical aspects of creativity in this songs.
bansari padum ninavigual - Ulagum Surrum valiban - A song which was very unique in its time.
Yadhum Uoore yavarum kelir -
Enguyum Eppodum - Both are good past faced songs. What I liked is the way percussion used
in these songs, and especially the charming snake music in the second song. Even now some of instuments used in these songs, sounds
very new to me.
Vaa Vennila - Pattina pravasam - So far I never
heard any song, where violin is used in such a
melodious fashion.
Sollathan Ninekeeran - Msv gave a settled and soothing interludes using just violin and piano. Great tune too.
What about these songs?.
neram pournami neram - meena nanban - Just the tune itself is enough.
Kan ponna Pokkile kall poggalama - Heavy
orchestration and use of chrous.
Parakuum pandhu parakkum - using the sound
of shuttle hitting the racquet effectively.
Rajavin parviyil rani en pakkam - Using the cart
running sound
Msv is the only MD who gave great original songs in popular remake movies like nalai namathe, sivagamiyin selvan, nalla nall and much more. 'Neela nayanangil' from nalai namathe,' inneyavale endru katthriunden' from SS deserves special mention.

Hi folks
I am a great fan of MSV. I could catalogue the beautiful melodies he has produced over the years that fuse carnatic music and western classical/pop or where the carnatic element is so subtle but I'd bore readers. (His songs from the movie "Karnan", for instance, often give me goose pimples.) All I'd like to recall here is that it was Illayaraja who apparently mooted the idea of joint composition in "Mella thiranthadhu kadhavu" -- which itself is a great tribute to this now forgotten MD. Does anyone recall the title of MSV's instrumental album done in 1970, I think. I can't recall the title but it had beautiful melodies, many of which have been used as fillers on Singapore radio. (The opening piece was in Mohanam.)

"the flute piece" is awasome..

Hi guys there is no doubt that MSV is a genius especially with is teaming with another genius TKR.The songs from Karnan was actually composed by TKR and this was one of the reasons the both had to split.
Actually you can listen to all his songs including
the cabaret songs.Unfortunately nowadays not
all the songs are listenable from other MDs.Thats why Isay that MSV is the KING of TFM. I will be of real help if anyone has a doubt on any songs of his or want to know about his songs.
Thanks
Hi guys it is a fact that MSV is a genius whether
alone or with another genius TKR ,all their songs
are superhits and it will go on in record in more
yrars to come.By the way the songs in the film KARNAN was composed by TKR and this was
one of the reasons for their unfotunate split.
Even the cabaret songs those days was listenable unlike nowadays only a single song is
worth listening.Thats why I say that MSV is the uncrowned KING of TFW.
I will be happy to share any info on his songs
for those who would like to know.
Thanks

Because of my die-hard devotion to IR in all of the 70's and 80's. I refused to listen to any other MD, except Salil Chowdhury and IR. In the 90's I looked back and began remembering all the songs I would try to ignore, while they ceaselessly appeared all the time on the Radio, the streets, wherever. Amazingly, these songs now bring back green memories. These are the songs composed by MSV, SG,VK,KVM. Parituclarly, MSV's songs are so perfect, that I do not understand how I could have ignored them. While Raja's interludes completely captivated, I now understand that in the department of a tune, Raja's best may not compare with MSV's best. Even my other God Salil Chowdhury may pale in comparison before MSV. I did meet MSV recently and paid my respects.
What I am saying is: Pick a few songs:
Muthukkalo Kangal
Kanpola Pokkile Kalpogalama
Aaahaya Panthalile, Ponunjal Aduthamma
Atho Antha Paravai Pole
Kelvi Piranthathu Andru
kallelam Manickam
Kambar Yemandhan
Yadhum Yorey Yavarum Keylir
Kanchi Pattuduthi
Neeyum Naanuma
Nee Yennedi Rakkamma
I have heard music, but I have never begun to appreciate perfection, until I heard them all and finally went back to MSV.
Long live MSV.

Dear MSV fans,
Has anyone heard the song:
"Nitham Nitham" from the film Pulamaipithan
This is a duet by SPB and MSV and is a mind-blowing number.
Does anyone know what raga it is?.

i like the various comments in this page? Are these fans of MSV are young or old generations?
Surely, TKR is also instrumental to the success of the duo. Still a mystery why they got seperated?
And why MSV is not able to repeat his old tunes?

Subra,
I have heard that TKR's alcoholism was holding back MSV's productivity. The movie moguls and MSV's well wishers stepped in to separate the two. I feel that TKR was a supreme composer with a great ear for violin interludes. Just listen to "Athaan En Athaan" and other MSV-TKR compositions and you'll recognize there's something extra in those pieces. I'm a fan of all music, especially MSV. I'm 32years old if that gives you any indication of my generation.
