Enough on ARR and his (??) capabilities and his longevity!!
Let us start this one on intorducing new singers...
To me, ARR has introduced many singers to TFM (Hariharan, Unni Krishnan, Swarnalatha, Harini etc..). It obvious that I am comparing him another maestro IR. I don't go beyond them as I haven't heard much of them (old music composres).
I see only IR and ARR are the competent MDs we have!! All others comein and vanish.
I appreciate ARR for having introduced so many yound singers to Film Music. One more important fact is that he extracts best from them.
Does anyone know about Harini?? It seems to me that she has classical background. Any comments...
If I hear IR's songs, mostly they are sung by SPB, SJ, PS and lately VJ and Chitra...But, ARR ...wow..he is very good at picking right singers for his songs..
--srikanth
p.s. I, being Telugu, am not familiar with Swarnalatha, Sujatha, UM, UK, Harini before. It was dominated by Chitra and SPB recently. Thanks to ARR, we could able to hear new voices - hariharan, UM, UK and above mentioned female singers

Swarnalatha was not introduced by ARR. She was introduced by MSV (I think). Her first song was ChinnanjiRu KiLiye in Neethinnu Dhandanai.
Sujatha also has sung many songs much before singing for ARR.
Harini is a school student, she studies in Padma Seshadri in Madras. ARR himself is an alumni of PSBB. Harini is at present in her 10th or 11th standard.
While it is true ARR introduced many good singers he also introduced atrocious singers like Udit Naraayanan. (IR has his own list of atrocious singers like Asha Bhonsle, Lata Mangeshkar who have no business singing in Tamil if they can't get their pronounciation right. Their songs become a hit bcos it is cute !)

I might (am ofcourse!!) be wrong in saying that ARR introduced Swarnalatha and Sujatha. I came to know about them only after listening to ARR's songs.
Thanks "pg" for the info on Harini. I didn't expect her to be so young!! Anyways, she sings well. Can you expand PSBB (PS is okay!! what is BB).

PSBB == Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan, a school in
Madras which takes remarkable pride (and maybe
deservedly) in sending students to the IITs.
Anyway, it is my opinion that ARR experiments
with lots of new voices, at the least, for the
sake of novelty.
Later!

MS subbulakshmi's telugu and hindi pronunciation is horrendous but that does not stop us from listening to her thiagaraja kirtanas. We also put up with SPB's early days TFM. I think Lata and Asha should be applauded for making an effort to sing in Tamil.

I think Swarnalatha was introduced by IR in pOvOmaa OOrgOlam.. (chinna thambi).

To Pagalavan :
As I mentioned bfor, Swarnalatha's first song was Chinnan chiru kiLiye from Neethikku Dhandanai. I am not sure who the MD was for this movie. This song was much before pOvOmaa OOrgOlam (chinna thambi).
To srini :
I generally don't listen to carnatic vocal bcos of this reason : most of the carnatic singers don't bother about stuff like pronounciation, meaning etc. From oldies like MS, DKPattammal etc to newbies like Sudha Ragunathan, Bombay Jayashri the song and its pronounciation IMO happens to be coincidental. I don't know Telugu or Hindi so all my opinions are based on their Tamil Songs. For carnatic music I stick to instrumental music.

PG MD for 'needhikku dhandanai'was MSV.
BTw regding ARR introducing new singers to TFM:
its a good act. But what i feel is he has not
repeated many of the singers he introduced.
For eg caroline,Angel,Anupama,Anuradha sriram,unni
menon, srinivas etc have not been used more than
a couple of times. He gives a good song only to reknown singers like Chitra,SPB ,Hari and UNNik.
There is not point in introducing singers and not using them later.
In that way Ilaiyaraja differs. If he introduces someone he makes sure that he helps them grow in the field.
Take the cases of Chitra, SPShailaja,UmaRamanan,Mano,Arunmozhi,Sunandha etc etc. He has given them a lot of chance to prove
themselves. Singers should not be used for 'experimentation'alone. They should be given
a chance to exhibit their talents also

I am a SunTV viewer. So I am not giving out the answer. But the surprise you have in store, was on Singapore Radio sometime in March 97. I too was surprised at that time.
I do not want to comment on the 'singers' introduced by ARR and I feel comparing ANY aspect of ARR with IR's would be insane.

Knowing Rajaraman, the song must be MD'ed by IR! As long you don't turn it into an anti-climax (ala Aravind!), we are game.

My first clue Unni menon was introduced under a different name and his first song was for Kamalhasan.

Was it 'pon maanae' from oru kaidhiyin dairy? I think the singer is vijay.
- From: Gokul (@ 204.76.131.140)
on: Mon Sep 15 21:02:42 EDT 1997
Pon Maanae is by either Vijay or Ramesh..
Reg ARR and the new singers:
Irrespective of his music and the quality of the singers, I think it takes great guts to
use anybody other than SPB/MV/MANO types
in the very first movie itself (Though he had ManiRathnam's Backing., convincing Mani should have been a big task). The reason ARR
used them b'cos he had nothing to lose but everything to gain and he used these Not So Familiar singers to etch a
distinct impression in the minds of the audience.
I think it was a good strategy . You need something really unique to break the spell
IR had over the audience. It did work for ARR..

Good guess Ravy! You are right! (You should
thank Ramki for taking you so near to the
song.)
UM indeed was introduced by IR in O.K.diary
as Vijay. Later after a big gap, he was
made popular by ARR.

There is a song in "kazhugu" sung by some Muralidharan (I think Kovai Muralidharan). It goes something like "kaadhal ennum kovil" - Pretty good song composed by IR. Is that the same Murali ur referring to?

sings for the chorus

Ramki: Sorry to point this out. These are the singers introduced by IR but couldn't make it big.
1. Arunmozhi
2.Unni menon (until the Roja break)
3.Brahmmanandam (Metti)
4. Kovai Murali
5. Radhika (Aaradhanai)
BTW is it the same Sujatha who sang in Gayathri/Kavikkuyil? I recently saw her interview but there was no mention about those songs.

Currently Arunmozhi is being used by Raja for
many good songs. Egs
Arumbu thalire(chandralekha)
masthana masthana(Raasaiyahh)
ival yaaro van vittu vandhingu(rajavin parvaiyile)
manamae gurunadharin sevadi(Mogamull)
vendina vendum varam tharupavalae(kattapanjayathu)
maankutti nee vadi meen kutti pole(pudhupatti ponnuthayi)
etc etc
AM sings a lot of songs under Devas music also
Coming to UM i dont find him singing a lot
of songs even after Roja(i am able to list only
5 songs)
Its the same Sujatha-im 100%sure abt it

Hi,
Could someone provide more information on Sree Kumar. I heard one of his latest songs, Tu Hi Tu, for ARR in a Hindi Film, Kabhi Na Kabhi.
Who is this guy called Sree Kumar???

He is basically a Keralite singer. Was introduced in Tamil films by IR (I think). Sings a lot of Tamil songs under IR's direction.

Talking about ARR's singers....Has anyone of you noticed that in all of his cassettes there is this
highlighted title..Harmony. And you always find three common names in all his albums...
Ganga,Renuka and Kanchana.
Wonder who they are?
And also others like Anto,Srini,etc
Febi was also in this Harmony gang but she got to sing "Strawberry" in MK recently.
I think she also sang in "Kalki"

It cannot be said that Sreekumar sings a lot in
IRs music- i can list only 3(vaaraiyo-aatma,kuthum sudar vizhi-siraichalai,sollaiyo-mogamull).
He is one of the leading(or the only as KJY doesnt sing much )in Malayalam films. He won a National
award for 'His highness abdullah'.

I have a feeling M G Sreekumar did not sing anything in His Highness Abdullah (definitely did not get an award). I think the movie had songs only from Yesudas, Balamurali Krishna and SPB (a Hindi song).
One of MGSreekumar's earliest hit in Malayalam was "Chitram". After that he has been singing on par with Yesudas.
In "Yatramozhi" he sings 3 songs for Illayaraja, (with M.S.Vishwanathan, Jayachandran and SPB getting one each).
I think he also sang for Rahman in the Malayalam film "Yoddha".

Hey guys:
M.G SreeKumar won the National award for "Kireedam"...It came in Hindi as"Gardish"
The song goes "kanneer poovinte"....
M.G.S was working in the State Bank Of Travancore.
He used to win a lot of competitions and finally got a break into MFM(if you could call that)..
His brother M.G.Radhakrishnan is a music director and scores music only for Malayalam movies..
MG sang a song in "Sirai Chaalai" but in the Malayalam version he got to sing all the songs.
He also used to conduct a program called "Voice of the week " on Asianet every week..He is good but,Satish, definitely not on par with with KJY.. :-)
His Highness Abdullah had KJY singing most of the numbers. He got the Kerala State award for some song in that movie(I think it is "Pramadha vanam")
