After listening to Kathal Sathi
one thing is sure IR is still a force to recoken with when it comes to soul stirring melodies.
The album brings back sweet memories of the golden days of IR.
the best example is the song 'Ena Marathanlum'
beautiful song and rendering by new singer 'Mahathi'(rare name after the rare raga).
Her voice reminds of Swarnalatha.
But in this fast electronic age will youngsters appreciate these numbers ?
If yes it good for TN

Sabesan,
Well I felt that I was taken back to my village from US after hearing Kaathe Kaathe especially. As you said, it is sung well. I see shades of Krishna Chandar in the voice of T. K. Karthik. He has done a tremondous job. Yes, as you said in this fast world they r not going to hear these songs, but certainly ME, you and few other fans of good music.
UV,
As you said, It remainded me of Swarnalatha on hearing Mahathi's voice, but is more rustic for that song tha Swarnalatha. I am glad to see that IR gives lot of chances to newcomers, few to be named like HArish ragavendra, Madhu balakrishnan, T. K. Karthi, and Mahathi. As you said, if the songs have a good picturisation they are bound to make a very good appeal. Let us hope KAsturi Raaja takes them well.

A few things to note about KS.
Excellent flute pieces - somebody is in flutes in the movie.
Every line mostly gets repeated

Manasey, Kaathey n enna marathalum r out of the world....
these 3 songs wud just transport the person into a new world....its simply too good.
and, even i felt like the starting flute piece in kanni mari sounded similar to the ones in koozhalootum kannaukku.
n nethu koodatah sounds like en soga kathiya kelu from thooral ninu pochu or some other vijayakanth film song, am not sure.

Review of Kaathal Saathi
Manasae Manasae—Avery sparely arranged song. An easy melody that floats along like the rural breeze. Easily the best orchestrated song, the guitar bits are great. Unni shows some difficulty with IR’s colloquial Thamizh but doesn’t hurt the song. Bhavatharini is actually not bad here but I won’t project on another singer in her place, it’s good to deal with what is there. As in the rest of the songs the recording is very jarring as heard in RaajANGAM. Hope the CD quality is better and lets the interlude nuances surface.
Kaathae Kaathae—A great flute and drums prelude preface the song. T.K. Karthik does an amicable job. This song reminded me in spots of the song, “Dheebangal paesum idhu kaarthigai maasam” from Devadhai. The tune is hummable but the music is pretty standard IR stuff. No revolution or revelation here, but it’s not irritating either.
Enna Marandhaalum—A simple, straightforward song whose lyrics and rendering are fittingly done by IR. This is the kind of song that’s perfect for IR’s voice, wracked with regret, melancholy and poignancy. The udukkai and bass chant the song along peacefully, but the lovely teasing string interlude in the middle is throwback IR stuff.
Enna Marandhaalum—This is by Mahathi, a new female singer? She sounds good but IR’s version is better.
Kannimaaru—The flute is pretty much the lead vocals in this song and as well it should be sounding as free and fluid as it does. Harini just responds to the flute though she does a good job. Though the main percussion for the song is udukkai, the middle of the song picks up other drums as the tempo speeds up. A decent song with Arunmozhi’s flute being the highlight.
Nethu Kudutha—T.K. Karthik sounds better here. He sounds like a mixture of many young male singers. The song has a distinct 80s feel, it kind of has the rhythm and sound of songs like “ammaadi um peacha eppoa kaeppaen”, but it’s easy to relate like a familiar face. Maybe in songs like these the rendition and lyrics could deliver more punch to accentuate the mood. Karthik does his part, but the lyrics are so so.
Anne Anne—is in the same vein as the “Anne Anne” from Kozhi Koovuthu without the old tune’s humor or life.
Overall, an easygoing effort from IR sure to please his diehard fans. Special thanks to the flutist who figures prominently throughout the soundtrack. It’s a safe bet for ears tired of the techno assault and Thamizh kolai, but nothing extraordinary like early IR or the IR of the recent TIME.

Udhai,
well thought out review, but lacks the personal narrative of your experience. what do you feel when you let the music grow into you? please don't try to split and analyze, just feel and give me an alternative review, i'll wait for the same.

When you are in Raajangham listening to "Kaathal Jaadhi", please go to the rare songs section and listen to songs from the movie "Ezhumalaiyan Mahimai", a supposedly 1996 movie. The songs are great.
These albums fortify my belief that IR is a class above the rest.

Krishna,
yes you are right, "Ezhumalaiyan Mahimai" are really good. I think it came as a telugu film, which got dubbed.
If you get chance do hear to Man of the Match(Malayalam), and Gulabi(Kannada) songs at RaajaNGAHM. They are also Great.
