For past few days i had been listening to songs
from a kannada movie titled 'nammoora mandhara hoove'(*ing Shivrajkumar and Prema(OM fame)).
This album has 7 fantastic songs by IRaja.
It was just like Irajas product in 80s. The music
composition for each song is excellent. Another
noteworthy feature in this album is Chitras voice.
She has given full life to all the songs. SPB
needless to say excels. Among six songs
there are 2 solos by Chitra, one solo by SPB and
3 duets by SPB,Chitra( one of them sounds like Minmini but the album says its chitra)and guys
there is a duet by Chitra and Raja himself. This
is the first time im listening to raja singing
in a different language. He does it really well.
Hope raja will come out with a tamil album of same quality

Your comment about Raja Singing in a different
Language. He has sung some Telugu Songs..
One I can think of is the movie Coolie No.1 or
something stupid like that. The song goes..
Kalaya.. Nizamaa.. It is a beautiful Song.
Also IR has written a Kannada Song. I dont if it is Namoora Mandara Hoove or a movie slightly earlier than that. It had a very catchy song sung
by Raja.
Did he get the Best MD (State) for Namoora Mandara Hoove?

Ramki: I had written about NMH in another thread much earlier. No one responded. :(. IR has also sung in kaalaapaani. In chiraichaalai that piece is sung by GA. IR has also scored an album called gulabi around the same time as NMH, and that too has great songs. I think he got a state award for that.. anyway it was in the same year.

Well I forgot to mention - gulabi is also a kannada movie.

aahaa... There are (atleast) two people with whom I can discuss 'nammUra manthaara hUvE'. The SPB solo 'alli laavaNiyalli laali' (my lyrics may be wrong) was OUT OF THE WORLD. Also the duet with Chitra 'muthu muthu' was lovely. I did not like the other songs to that extent. I borrowed the cassette from my house owner (I was in Bangalore then) and recorded those two songs.
Just before this movie IR did music for 'shiva sainyaa'. Songs were fast ones as it was an action movie. IR has sung a song with Chitra. It goes like 'chikkumagalOra E chikku malligE'. It is a lovely song. All other songs are by Mano and had nothing worth mentioning. IR has written a song 'jailalli hutti'.
After n.m.hUvE, he did another movie - gulaabi. I did not get a chance to listen to those songs.

NMH got a filmfare award for
music for sure. The movie also
got some best movie award.
Raja is well respected in
kannada movies. His
face appears in posters as it does in
in TN. (Even deva's face appears!)

Ravi:
Are you saying that the verses "thEneduthu vechirukkum thEr nee" in the song "mannan koorai chElai" in Siraichaalai was sung by Gangai Amaran? I thought it was IR. What a wonderful song!

CP i too think that Siraichalai song is by IR

CP and Ramki: My cassette credits GA with singing those lines. It sounds like him to me too. You should listen to the mallu version too, to see the difference imm.

I saw a Telugu cassette of IR : Chinnabbayi *ing Venkatesh. Has anybody heard it ? Any opinions ?
- From: Ramki (@ csi08.cs.wmich.edu)
on: Fri Sep 12 17:05:47 EDT 1997
PG my friend says that Chinnabbbayi is an another
good product from Raja. KViswanath is the director
for this film so i think we can expect a lot of good songs. According to my friend there are songs
based on Mohanam, sindhu bHairavi and kalyani.
SPB and Chitra are the main singers.
In this context i like to mention that Maragadhamani has tuned in 12 good songs for the telugu film 'Annamaiyah'(*ing Nagarjun as Annamacharya).

Hey, someone tell me the place where NammaOoru mandhaara hoove cd/cass is available in US?
IR has cut some kannada devotional songs much earlier in his career. One on Ambaal starts with lyrics "Amma endharu KoogidharE" (Amma endru azhaithaal) I have listened to that one. Just great!!
In which year was the NOMandhaarahoove cd released??

During my brief stay at Vizag (1985), watched a telugu movie 'preminchi pelladu' (a comedy *ing BanuP and Rprasad) music by IR. Excellent songs. Except for one all others are original. The best one in that movie is 'oyyari kodaramma ullanthu enthukkamma kalavaram' - has a smooth, melodious tune. Wondering why IR didn't repeat this one in Tamil. When I went to Hyd. in 1994 I found this cassette and grabbed it.

I listened to chinna abbayi . The movie
is from k.Vishwanath.
One song 'jaaji malli ' by SPB stands out .
Very catchy . The rest seem to highlight
SPB's prowess rather than raja's . But they
were all typical Telugu Songs with that beat.

Aravind - What Ravi must have meant was that: assuming IR has done 20 films in Telugu as compared to 700+ in Tamil; his percentage of good movies in Telugu would surely have been better than in Tamil movies. After all 50% of Telugu is merely 10 whilst it's a whopping 350 in Tamil!
- From: Ravi (@ greed.cs.umass.edu)
on: Tue Sep 16 08:17:14 EDT 1997
NOV: neenga sollarathu OraLavukku correct thaan. But the number of telugu movies he has scored music would certainly be in excess of a 100. Can some one get some stats on that?
- From: Ramki (@ b256.bernhard.wmich.edu)
on: Tue Sep 16 17:48:19 EDT 1997
Also i think he gets films that have lot of scope for good music. Think of sitara, sagara sangamam,
Nirikshana, swathi muthyam etc etc these films had a subject that demanded good music. But 3/4th of
the tamil films he does doesnt have any story to
be considered. So the MD doesnt have good situation to provide proper songs

I will have to buy that. We have not had a single hit movie after sindhu bairavi which demanded REAL musical knowledge. It is a pity that mOga muL went unnoticed.
And even before that, IR's trash movies (I mean the movie and not the music) outnumber the good ones by a very significant margin. I remember IR scoring music at the rate of 50+ a year for atleast a decade. Only a handful demanded real music. dabbaa padaththukkellaam nalla music pOttu, IR than paadalgaLai waste paNNittaar.

Hi Aravind,
Please don't insult kOyambaththUr by calling it South Manchester.
Manchester doesnot exist in the map of textiles world anymore
whereas kOyambaththUr does. Moreover Manchester could not have
existed if Indian and Asian markets and raw material producers
didn't exist.

I got the Nammura Mandhaara HoovE cd. This IR really does good job outside TN:) Some songs have the influence of India 24Hours, here and there!!
1. halli :: very different tune and good rendition from spb/chitra!! melodious one. Kind of tap your feet song!!
2. Muthu Muthu neera haniya :: brings in village environs in your minds (halli in kannada means village)above average song!!
3. Omkaradi kante :: IR and chitra! great! Whaw!
Different music! Tune! Interludes remind of IR's symphonical deviations! Kind of experimental stuff!! No boundaries! The violin interlude appears from nowhere immediately after pallavi and you are caught unawares!!
4. Manadaseya hakki :: Another different song from IR!! The kind of instruments he uses throughout the song, besides the instrument/sync. he does while rendering the pallavi, is totally hynotic!! Manjula Gururaaj (kannada playback??) has done great job with "our" spb!!!Different tune!! Great melody!!
5. Hele KogilE :: by chitra, is a good song thats more rustic!! Good start with guitar!! Lots of guitar pieces through the song!! Oh! After long, IR comes with such guitar pieces!!
6. Omkaradi kande :: Chitra. (solo repeat)
7. Dheem takita Dheem takita :: kind of "thakita thadhimi thakita thadhimi" of salangaioli, rendered by spb. fast one! nothing special.
Overall rating:: very good album!!

"JAYARAJ
Classical notes
It is going to be a film with a difference, riding on the theme of rain and its various moods which reflect the human condition.
At 32, ace Malayalam director Jayaraj is already a veteran with 11 films including national award-winninng Deshadanam under his belt. The new offering is the love story of a ghazal singer (played by Mohan Lal) and his unrequited love for a poetess who blooms too early. The film is to be shot in Mumbai and Kerala and is very much in tune with a genre of cinema that dares to be different.
Music will form the soul of the film and eight maestros will compose it. There is ghazal virtuoso Hariharan, Vanraj Bhatia, Pandit Raghunath Seth, Telugu superstar Keeravanan, Raveendran, Bhupen Hazarika, Ilayaraja and A.R. Rehman. Ilayaraja has agreed in principle to compose the music for the poems that will lace the film. Negotiations are on with Rehman to tie up the logistics.
The film will feature Malayalam superstar Mohan Lal, Suresh Gopi and TV star Mayuri, and is being produced by Jayaraj's New Generation Cinema on a surprisingly low budget of Rs 25 lakh. The female lead of a talented poetess who dies young is played by Mayuri. The character is modelled on a real-life prodigy whom Jayaraj declines to name. Jayaraj's story, scripted by noted Malayalam short story writer Sarah Joseph, will interpolate the moods of the monsoon with the highs and lows of a ghazal ustad's life and times. "Rain reflects success, romance, sadness, nostalgia and death," says Jayaraj. "And it is sexy."
Vanraj Bhatia, Pandit Raghunath Seth and Bhupen Hazaria will pitch in with their lyrical compositions.
If the music composers are acknowledged masters so are the lyricists. Jayaraj is resurrecting the bard of Malayalam poetry Vayalar Rama Varma. Pure poems, compositions of O.N.V. Kurup, activist Sugathakumari and Kakkad, will knit together the film and other lyrics will be penned by P. Bhaskaran, ONV and Kaithapram.

`Ezhumalaiyan Mahimai'
Eknath films ``Ezhumalaiyan Mahimai'' is a mythological story eulogising the Lord of Seven Hills. The music scored on classical lines by Ilayaraja is a balm to frayed nerves. The producers have opted for old-fashioned cardboard sets in place of high-tech wizardry which would have worked wonders for the movie. The film, however, throws light on certain rituals and the significance behind the tonsuring by devotees in Tirumala. All this is inderlinked with the story of a housewife who saves her husband from the clutches of Sani and Yama by undergoing severe penance and invoke the blessings of Lord Srinivasa.
Bhanupriya as Padmavathi is expressive. Pradeep Sakthi could have showed some restraint while Sudarsan is impressive. ``Deva neethi edhu swami'' (Janaki), ``Ezhu kundrudaya swami'' (Janaki) and ``Prabho Srinivasa'' (SPB and Chitra) are pleasing numbers.

Dear friends ,IR has scored many songs in Telugu, which have gone unnoticed in Telugu itself.
1. From "KEECHU RAALLU" one song by SPB and Chitra -" mogalipoove monicaa" - mesmerising, man, just listen to it, you will know - another stupid song from this movie by Usha Uthup became very famous!!
2. From " ASHWAMEDHAM", the songs, " oh, prema", "seethakaalam", and the best one " Yen debba" by SPB and SJ -unfortunately the movie feature Balakrishna , one lousy actor.
3. From " Chaitanya ", the song " paapayedu gola " was very good. The other songs were all great, but i donot remember their lyrics.
4.From " Coolie No:1", the song " kila kila mane" was outstanding.
5. From "Nirnayam", the songs were all studded with IR trademark.

Hey, guys!,
Want to hear the songs of Nammoora Mandhaara Hoove in TAMIL??. It's a movie by Muktha srinivasan, music scored by IR. Excellent songs!! How come u all have missed it, men?? It was " KANKALIN VAARTTHAIKAL ". I have the cassette. Really a nice composition. Dont u believe me??
Ask the casette retailer. Really a worth to buy one.... But SPB had not rendered any song in it. The singers are Unni, Chitra, Bhava, Arunmozhi, IR himself. Buy it, Hear it, u'll be simply carried away by the music.....
An additional info, the movie was not released there in TN. ( why...??!! )
Ever Yours,
