I've noticed a queer trend in tamil film song lyrics where positive adjectives like azhagu are attributed to objects which would normally be presumed to be farthest from that kind of description. Vairamuthu's Azhagaana Raatchasiye from Mudhalvan was the first one which seemed odd. A recent one is Azhagiya Asura from Whistle. Not sure who the lyricist is for this one. Assuming that today's kids do read Amar Chitra Katha etc., I'm sure they'll be baffled to see hideous looking creatures being called Asuras and Raakshasas. Can you think of other such adjective-noun combos?

I know the word Azhagu means Beautiful, but what on earth are Asuras and Raakshasas? (pl. understand, Tamil is a second language to me, or maybe not even...) :-)

Asura and Rakshasa both mean demons - people who are diagonally opposite to Sura/Devathas who are godly people. In general there was/is a general picturization of demons as ugly creatures, but Ravana was supposed to be a very handsome man in mythology.
I guess in this context, Azhagaana Ratchasi would be termed as an oxymoron.

purv:asura and rakshasa are Sanskrit words used in Tamil. Sura means divine or heavenly and asura is the opposite. Rakshasa means fiend.

Excusez-moi, s'il vous plait, Mr. Jagadish. I just don't know of any online Tamil to English dictionaries. :-)
