Aruvi,
The hype is more a function of time. These days, due to satellite TV, internet and music channels, its natural that there is more scope for publicity. Any movie / music albums worth a penny has its share on publicity and one gets to hear more about them, which wasnt the case in early 90s or earlier. And music is making more money than what it used to, a few years back. Hype and promotion are natural byproducts, one cannot blame a MD for riding on such hypes and promotion.
Deva might produce (re-produce) more albums now, but he isnt the one whos "dominating" the scene today. He might have 200 songs to his credit, out of which only a fraction could be "hits". ARR produces less albums per year as compared to others, but the proportion of his hits are much higher!!

proportion of hits are much higher?????
was ARR's any recent music a real hit.... En swasa katre had to be combined with some other old ARR hits for CD sales.... same with padayappaa.... not sure about ARR's latest....

Sabesan,
If your take the proportion of hits, ARR fares kuch better than Deva who seems to be prooducing one album every week!!
Adding a CD to En Swasa Katre was more a marketing gimmick by Pyramid(??) rather than to boost the album's sales. IMO, ESK is a very good album and the songs have been well appreciated (refer to ARR new album's thread.
Going by TV countdown shows which are to a large extent based on the album sales in T-Nadu, ESK and Padaiappa have been `commerical' hits.

Facts and Figures - Album Sales(Source Kumudham or AV)
1) ARR
2) IR
3) SAR
4) Deva
I think it was mentioned that even though ARR and SAR didn't do as many albums as IR and Deva, their sales were very good.

I really hate PRYRAMID as far as marketing of CD's. When it comes to ARR it promotes his music with a free CD. Look ESK, padayappa, Sangamam......but those guys didn't do the same thing for "poovellam kettupar". I feel the album was in calibre with any ARR score of late.
Please don't come with a reason YSR is nowhere, it will be a dorky thing. The fact is he's got a lot of stuff and he should have been atleast encouraged rather than following cheap partial stuff like this. Not a good thing PYRAMID guys ........

I see a lot of people buying padayappa and ESK songs in CD's. Most of them know abt this free CD only after they have made the decision and when they want to just play it and see. MS pannadhu nalla joke but a poor statement.

I didn't get a free CD with Padayappa, Sangamam or ESK and all mine are Pyramid CD's. I also bought Poovellaam Ketupaar on a Pyramid CD. I agree with Kamesh, the free CD's they give are utter cr** anyway, one that I heard has the worst compilation of songs ever.

I bought ESK and only then did I realise that there was a free CD inside the case.
If a company has huge surplus of unsold CDs, one good way to get rid of it to offer it free along with some new CD. From customer's perspective, this is a "bonus" they get. Most customers arent going to buy a ESK CD just because there is an additional CD that comes with it.
A company gets dual benefits by this. It'll help it get rid of the surplus, plus it'll also boost the sales of the main album. If the company is gonna give a free CD along with some relatively unknown album for which the sales arent guaranteed, whats the point??
There have also been instances (I know of some in HFM) where a second free CD has been offered after some period, when an estimate of the main album's sales are known.

sorry geetha.... u r wrong about the cr**.... i think to increase the sales of ESK, pyramid had put one more very good collections of ARR along with it (i dont have any of ARRs CD.... my brother who bought that was telling me).... well iam not sure if that helped in increasing the sales of ESK.....

chandy, in HFM they add new songs to the album after 100 days of the film in theaters:-)))) especially those films with a mile long titles and some 10 songs in the same tune:))
