I think the 2nd one was BathrakAli.
With the song "vAngOnnA Adi vAngonnA", people
started labeling RaajA as a DUBBANGUTTHU Raaja - till KAVIKUIL's "Chinna kannan azaikiran" came.

I also think "uravadum nenjangal" as Raaja's second film. But, I have read somewhere that "kaatrinile varum geetham" was the second film.

I seriously doubt if 'kaatrinilE varum geetham' was his second movie. It is more sophisticated than most of his earlier movies.

kaatrinilE varum geetham was released in 1977. The other movies suggested here were released in 1976, the same year as annakkiLi. So I think that rules out katrinilE varum geetham.
Another famous song from BathrakaaLi is kannan oru kai kuzhanthai. I think what we remember varies from person to person. :).

I think, Ilaiyaraja's second Tamil movie
is uRavaadum nenjam. (SPB's first song
for Ilaiyaraja - oru naaL, unnOdu uru naaL

Uravadum Nenjam has a beautiful song - "Oru Naal Unnodu Ore Nall, uravinil aada..'
What a beautiful romantic song !

It is so very different from Annakkili. The violin interludes before the pallavi are just great. When ever I listen to these songs, I just wish somebody would digitally remaster all these great songs and release them on CD. Sigh !

I vividly remember it was 'Palootti Valartha Kili'
as Ilayaraja's second film. Vikatan or Kumudham
remarked that the songs were so so and expected a lot after Annakkili.

As an addendum to my earlier posting, the
movie 'palooti valartha Kili' has a melodious
song (but not a hit; largely due to the movie's
failure) sung by SPB & Janaki 'naan pesa
vandhaen ; sollatthan varthai illai'
There are other movies that were released
before 'KatrinilE varum geedham'. One of them is
Bhuavana oru ? (Sivakumar & Rajni).

I think the second movie is "Vettrikku Oruvan". It has a song by TMS and SJ "Thoranam Medayil Aadidum..Nayakan, Nayaki" I am sorry if the words are wrong.

Uravadum Nenjam was somewhere between 5 and 10, I think.

Saithadamma Sainthadu, Soolam, Nadiye Thedi Vandah Kadal and then there are several movies I am trying to recollect.

However, any of you would know the following:

The song "Devan Thiruchabai Malargale" is in which movie? (sung by I think Sasirekha)

The song'Naan Pesa Vandhen, Sollathan Oru Vaarthai Illai' does anyone have it? I search Chennai last year. They had the movie album but that one song was not available in that SP.

Anyone has a list of Raja's first 100 movies?

because, spb did not sing at all in some of
the initial movies of ilayaraja. it can be

vayadhinile' spb did not start singing for
IR's movies. since spb had sung the song
'ore nAl..' uravAdum nenjangal can't be the
2nd film of IR.

It is not right that SPB started very late with IR. He was in Uravaadum Nenjam and in Paalootti Valartha Kili, one of which is certainly IR's second.

That Vetrikku Oruvan was IR's second is way off the mark. This movie stars Sivaji. IR's first Sivaji film was Deepam. In fact, that was the first time a big producer (Balaji in this case) chose Raja. That it helped both Balaji and Sivaji is another story altogether.

IR's second movie in wht sense? Second movie by release date or second movie in his really worked?

One "perSu" says that IR's second movie was 'iyaRkai ennum iLaya kaNNi' or something of that sort which never got released? I really dont know whether it could be true! May be we have to dig into old cine-magazines to get valid proof for our memories! ;-)

I have a list of Raaja's 727 movies year wide from 1976 to 1997. The movies released in 1976 were 1. Annakili 2. Palutivalartha kili 3. Badrakali.4. UravadumNenjam.

But the first recorded song wsa "kola kolaiya munthrika" from Paaluti valartha kili. In this song Kannadasan purposely added a line called "raaja va".The song goes as such.
"Kola kolaiya munthirika nariya nariya sutthi va,.....

Kanna ododi vaa, Raaja va". Kannadasan explained that it is his welcome to IR. That speaks the magnanimity of the great poet Kannadasan.

IR's second movie was "Badhrakali". I am sure of this because both Annakkili and Badhrakali were released in 1976. You can refer to Raajangahm.
