I don't know if SPB was popular in Mallu, like he was in Tamil/telegu/Kanda/Hindi, as far as I knew, malayaalam was ruled by KJY & P.jeyachandran.

My knowledge in MFM is very limited, But still I remember one song by SPB (and M. G. Sreekumar Duet) from the movie Yathramozhi (MD : IR) ...

SPB did a good job in that song - I think he sang for Sivaji Ganesan !

SP Baala Subraamanyam in Malyaalam!
A rare occurrence indeed. I have
listened no more than 10 odd songs by
him in Malayaali, despite the fact that
in Kannada, Telugoo and Taamil collectively
I have heard no less than 20-25 thousand songs
involving his voice.
A surprising aspect is that of about 10 or so
songs, at least 6 or 7 were what I personally
regard as songs of high quality and merit.
This average of 60-70 percent of real quality
songs is extremely high even by SPBS standards.
Almost all those songs that I heard belonged to
early and mid 1980's.
According to my estimations total SPBS songs in Malayaalam are about 100.

Why did SP Subraamanyam not make incursion into
Kerala? May be he wanted to leave Malayaalam
songs entirely to his "Daas Anna". Or may be that
complete domination in 3 languages was enough for
him.

The Taamilians in this forum often label the malyaalis as "mallu".

Among those handful of songs, one was
a duet -- a rare duet -- Yassoo Daas and
Baala Subraamanyam. In sheer quality this
song shines not as a star, but as a sun.
Nowhere else I heard such an exqusite duet,
neither such a healthy competition for
superb quality on the part of two vocalists,
as in this all-male duet.
I don't remember the wording of this song.
But this might be the only Malyaalam song
having Subraamaniam and Yassu Daas in tandem.

There is one great SPB-KJY song in Tamil (Apart from Dhalabadhi song). It goes "En Kaadali Yaar sollva isai ennum pen allavaa". SPB sings for Kamal and KJY sings for Sivakumar. Movie "Thangaththil Vairam"

I am talking about Malayaalam all-male
duet.
The Taamil one "Yen Kaadali..." is a good one
but not upto that standard.
Some Malyaali surfer may come up with the
wording of that song.

1) Irandu kaighal naanghaanaal - Thiri soolam (I Think)

2) Aruvi kooda jathi illamal - a karthik film (early 90's)

perhaps SPB's malyala accent would have been a problem!
This is precisely the reason I hear from some of my Mallu friends. They say, "his malayalam doesn't flow smoothly (and thus loses nativity) and often the listener finds the awkwardness in the rendition", I am not sure how universal this feeling is among the mallus though.

well spb in malayalam...i've only heard a few songs of him in malayalam, recently in mammooty's 'phantom'....but as kaumadi already said, his accent makes his success in malayalam impossible. when i hear him singing in malayalam i suddenly understand tamilians' (especially nagas', naaz' etc.) 'hatred' on non-tamilians with terrible accent singing in tamil. till months ago i didn't know swarnalatha was a malayalee, cause i can even hear out her 'bad' accent, and it only fits to a limited number of songs. same to spb...for example a song of his in malayalam which i liked very much was a fun-song where he sung in duet with m.g.sreekumar, 1990 in mohanlal's 'kilukam'. the song is 'ooty patanam'. and also the song nagas already mentioned 'kakala kannamma' in yathramozhi. beautiful song, had learnt it by heart in those days....kakala kannamma kanmizhichi paramma kannimanam thonitaane...etc. but fact is also that in those songs spb actually was singing in tamil, for malayalam film.

malayalam mp3s....i've around 600 of them...that kakala kannamma number i only have on cassette..sorry...where i got them from? in those old days from napster, then from audiogalaxy (both dead now - what a pity)...well, now i'm not getting anything...
so if anyone is interested in malayalam mp3s, if i have the ones u need, i can send them to u...

i think we malayalees are called 'mallus' everywhere outside kerala, here in vienna and i think everywhere...even if we talk about ourself we (me actually not) use the term 'mallu'. just an abbreviation...a friendly abbreviation...

The Dasettan-Balu Sir duet starts Swarna Meeninte Chelulla Pennane....It is a wonderful song. The most important fact is it has Jayachandran also singing along with the two maestros.

What are your comments about the accent and even pronunciation of S Jaanaki and P Susheela in Malayaalam?
S Jaanaki dominated Malyaalam from about 1978 to 88.

Outsider- SJ has won the Kerala State Government Award for the Best Female Playback Singer 12 times- that speaks volumes of her works in Malayalam.

Reg. SPB's songs in Malayalam, today morning as I was driving to work, I heard a melodious Malayalam song on the radio, which sounds very much like SPB- it goes 'Paal nilavinil--'. Can anyone tell me the film, MD etc?

SPB's pronounciaton in malayalam is pathetic.While Janaki sings like a MAlayali, P Susheels leaves a lot to be desired.

Though SPB has sung songs under IR,SP Venkatesh,Ravindran,Johnson, one of the better songs of his are

Nenjil Kanjabanam - Ganmdharvam _SP venkatesh
Paal nilaavile - Butterflies - Ravindran
both solos & Mohan lal starrers . Like what is mentioned in the thread , Kaakaala Kannamma (IR) is a good song but SPB is largely singing in Tamil in this song.

Ravindran composes for only about a film a year nowadays..

The latest Ravindran song is for "Nandanam" which is presently running has got mild classical melodies.

The last one from him before that was " Aaram Thampuran" also with some light classical melodies.
