I was actually looking forward for someone starting this thread for this IR Classic..instead of waiting for someone..lemme do the honours..
a true masterpiece at that time when it came out in 1976 for our super star & taken wholly in singapore...
a KJY & Jency combo album...with en uyir neethaney, darling darling - P susheela, hey padal ondru, akkarai cheemai, Oh priya...
An interesting note was the movie soundtrack was done in 16 track stereo in hongkong...which is why it is such a joy to listen 2 it in cd till this very day(just listen 2 en uyir neethaney in ur dicsman)......can be able to distinguish every single instrument when listening...something which other soundtracks were lacking at that time...Priya stands the test of time which dharmayudham & johnny coming in 2nd to this movie soundtrack..any comments pals??

Evolution Vii, you are a really a great nostalgia guy.
i can only second your comments and you have said it all. it is the best recorded album of IR. En uyir neethane is not only a treat in discman, but in the car sterio too. you get a feeling that all the muscians are sitting and playing next to you.
the second stereo album of IR was chakkalathi and it failed all the expectations. except for 'vaadai vaatuthu' no other song clicked.
the third one - pattakathi bairavan - was ok in recording, and two songs thevathai & engengo were hits.
and when echo started releasing his albums it was mostly stereo albums. no big advances since then.
but Priya - the first stereo in tfm is something special even today.

nandri geeth..nice 2 know u second wif me..I'm sure most IR fans would 2..Priya was released by INRECO records at that time...afterwhich Echo records began releasing all of IR hits...just imagine hearing darmayudham's "agaya gangai" in the same format track..it would have been minblowing!!!!

Evolution 7,
Appreciate your passion for reviving the great classics from the golden age of TFM 60-80s. Nice to see a SGian's hunger for the sounds and tastes of tamil filmworld.
I am keen to know what the tamils in SG/Malaysia felt about albums like Ninaithale Inikkum(1979??) and Priya(78), since major parts of the movie setting was based there. Surely there must have been a special signifance since it featured their adopted land. Can old-timers recall?
Yaathum Oore and Ennuyir Nee Thane had certain Malay lines, can any translate?
Akkarai Cheemai Azhaganile is one of my all time favorites. Interestingly, it is not featured in the 1000 great IR songs list prepared by newtfmpage veterans!
BTW, Rajini cycling through the posh streets with a Paratta Thalai and handlebar moustache was a glorious sight. Could have done that in Aminjikarai Market itself!

Evolution Vii:
Iam not sure whether Priya is recorded in 16track sound. but indeed Priya is a very very technically sound album by Raaja. to me, yen uyir nee thaane....song is the PICK of all. for one who asks a classical example of blend (western/carnatic), here is the song. jus listen to it.....raagas are truely backed up by some rich authentic chords and interludes.

Panchu Arunachalam,Raja and Super* means great songs. That continued from Priya till Veera.Raja and Panchu Arunachalam contributed a lot for the image of Super *. When Raja started his career he was working with rural subjects only.As he is from a rural background everyone thought that he could do only those kind of movies. That was a challenge left for his career. As usual Raja broke all those assumtions and came up with such a great album.

Hi prabhu...
Ninaithale Inikkum was a more complete movie showcasing singapore than priya...a musical journey by ms vishwanathan but short of a masterpiece like priya....it had abut 8 to 9 songs...
both movies' location were taken in parts of singapore, malaysia....as for priya it also included the beautiful beaches of hongkong...
NI was a typical KB movie ending with a climax song ( inimai niranthu)...wif the beautiful & young jaya prada & cameos by sv sekar (electronics shop in luck plaza), jaya sudha ( the anbarey girl) & 'puthu puthu arthangal" girl (forgot her name) for namma ooru singari song taken in sentosa....all from the stables of KB...
Unlike priya, NI showed more of singapore...National theatre (sambo siva sambo song) & cockpit hotel -- both no more now, botanical gardens for what a waiting song, sentosa for yadhum oorey & yavarum kelir, orcghard, selegie complex in little india, jurong bird park & chinatown....bits & pieces of singapore/ malaysia during the movie...
As for priya, it had japanese/ chinese garden for hey padal ondru song, big splash for darling darling, damien hall church in queenstown for oh priya, shentown way (padang park), streets of malaysia & the beaches of hongkong for akkarai cheemai song....it also showed singapore's national day....Priya was actually written by sujatha for kumutham magazine & was directed by sp. muthuraman december 1978 (avm's aasthana director)... & had a singapore malay lady hasna acting...The Songs of priya were recorded in stereophonic format by Inreco records...
rajni had a good following even during those days whereas kamal was already super star then...NI was the best Kamal/ rajni combo movie to date by after 16 vayathiniley on being given equal airtime & importance...as 2 what kamal said in the recent singapore show, it could have been their last together...After NI, there were no kamal/ rajni movies showcasing singapore / malaysia...No other movies after these 2 were shot in such an extend...
Varuvan Vadivelan wif jay ganesh & latha was also shot here & malaysia showing the temples of batu caves...poonmazhai poliyuthu also showed lots of singapore with vijayakant, suresh & nathiya which had good songs by laxmikant payarelal or bapphi lahiri ( me not 2 sure)....after which vijayakant/ banupriya came for kaviya thalaivan - manog gyan, sarath kumar & kushbu for 1 movie (can't recall the name, could be kattabomman)....& finally our 1/2 douser for ooru Vittu ooru vanthu....which also had good songs by IR...

Varuvan Vadivelan song was "Joyful singapore colorful malaysia" sung by SPB and PS (MSV Music Director). Vijayakumar and Fatafat Jayalakshmi acted in that lengthy but jolly type song. Those days, actors started exposing their chest (thanks to kamal) and continued to appear only with underwear :-). In this song, Vijayakumar just removes his towel and runs into the crowd (with his only UW on !!!)

Evolution, that was a nice writeup.
while reading, the ninaithaale inikkum scenes are coming in a flashback. i liked the song Namma Ooru singaari. its Geetha who is in that song and she was gorgeous in it.
Havn't seen Priya yet - as friends advised not to see it and spoil the spirit of the novel. The novel by Sujatha was a craze and it had England as the backdrop.
surprising, till today unuyir neethane stands as the best recorded song of IR.

the malay words in 'en uyir neethana' is actually translation of the song itself in Malay language

Evolution Vii- Great write-up!
geeth- I don't know if you have heard 'Chinna chinna paathi katti, seeraga chamba naathu vechen'- a lovely folksy song by SJ in Chakkalathi. Sadly it didn't become too popular, but IR's 'Enna paattu paada enna thaalam podu' did hog airtime in Radio Ceylon.

En uyir neethane is excellently spoiled by Jency by her Nasal voice.if the same chance was given to me, it would have been a more hit song!

Saravanan, thanks a lot for mentioning this Chinna Chinna paathikatti song. I had this record in 1980 (school days) and then lost it soon. With your post came the recollection.
Appreciate the way you give details.
Now i remember another one from Chakkalathi.
'Enna paatu paada, Enna thaalam poda'.
Can be forgotten.
But chinna chinna paathikatti is a sweet song.

saravanan, thanks for the post on Chakkalathi songs. i cannot remember that SJ song. only 'enna paattu paada' and 'vaadai vaattuthu' are in my mind. will try to look for it. was it only SJ or was there one more female voice with her in that song ?
