How MDs fare in singing?

"Sollathan Ninaikkiren"... sung by MSV. It wasn't so graceful. Someone would have sung better. But his voice suits the song "Sambo Siva Sambo".
Illayaraja may not have more modulation in his voice. But his flawless tamil and clean voice makes up for that. 'Janani Janani',"Nan thedum sevvandhi poovidhu',"Siru Ponmani" and host of other songs are a testimony to his voice. Sankar from Sankar Ganesh sang couple of songs. He sucked. Chandrabose sang few songs like "Endi Muthamma" from Aaru Puspangal. ARR started singing from "Mustafa". He is right about his inferiority complex that he couldn't sing. He sucked too. Deva is even worse with his song "Kavaliapadathada sagothara". Any other MDs.

  MSV has sung only few songs. But his voice whereever he has sung though can't be compared with mainstream playback singers is good for that situation. He has done fairly well. Sollaththan Niniaikkiran is not sung for any hero and looks like a background songand hence it is OK for MSV.
  
  Another memorable song is MSV-SPB "enakkoru kadhali irukkindral". One can appreciate how SPB improvises the same lines sung by MSV.
  
  Another one by MSV is "kandadhai sollugiren, ungal kadhayai sollugiren". This is really good.
  
  The overall impression i have is MSV has sung only few songs and he has done fairly well.
  
  
  Ilayaraja's voice suits that of a "pamarath thamizhan". There are lot of good songs. There are lots of songs where u feel these songs are better off sung by other mainstream play back singers. (I never get this impression on the songs sung by MSV). Neverthless there are lots of good songs sung by IR like "siru ponmani", "sorgame endralum", alaigal oivadhillai songs etc.
  
  ARR does not do many. Whereever he has done he is OK.
  
  Others did very few songs...
  
  
  The songs that suck are the ones by Deva. No other comments...

  MSV is not a total failure as a singer. He did pretty good job. But surely he is the best actor cum music director after SPB!! T.R is the worst actor cum music director

  YSR sang really well in Idhu Kadhala, I think he is one of the best MD/Singers.
  Bharathwaj is also very good.

  Maragathamani is a good singer/MD even though he did very few films in tamil. I remember he was the md for KB's 'Vaname Ellai; and Arjun's Kondatam. The sad song in Kondattam, if you ppl ever heard it wont deny me. He could replace Unnikrishnan, IMHO.

  Whatever MSV has sung have been big hits. 'Sambo siva sambo' from ninaithale inikkum was really a good one.
  
  Not all IR songs were big hits however following are IR's best:
  naan thedum sevvanthi poovithu
  janani janai
  kathal oviyam
  veettukku veettuku vasappadi venum
  sorgame endralum
  ponnoviyam kandenamma
  
  Ganesh (sankar-ganesh) sang one just for IR in movie 'vanna vanna pookkal. It was not a full song. I think he did just the humming part in 'pangunikkapparam' song
  
  ARR sang just a few songs. His tamizh pronounciation is horrible but all his songs were big hits.
  
  YSR is singing (or trying to sing) like ARR. But YSR's tamil pronounciation is far better than ARR. I liked 'all day jolly day' song from pennin manathai thottu.

  'all day jolly day' never touch a pennin manathu..hehe i mean its not from pennin manathai thottu. Its from Manathai thirudi vittai( both about manathu and rubber-deva).

  ya man i duno wat's wrong with his voice. i hav noticed its improving more and more and he is great in the little inbetween lines or humming like the one in "chinna chinna asai" or "isqh bina".
  In my view the order of singing MDs is
  
  1.Baradwaj ( "Chiina vayasila", "Avaravar valkaiyil", "uyir konda rojave" )
  2.Maragathamani (Kondattam.. "Unnodu thaan" sad song)
  3.IR ( I am an ARR fan, strictly..still!)
  4.ARR
  5.YSR ( ya he tries to sing like ARR but not bad)
  6.MSV
  
  
  The worst singer MDs (first one the most worst)
  1.TR
  2.SARajkumar
  3.Deva
  4.KR
  5.Imaan
  6.Vidyasagar ( he aint that bad)
  
  SPB is the best but he is not a regular musician. Sureshpeters is alrite too but not much regular in TFM)

  no way man. He is certainly a better singer than YSR, ARR, Bharadwaj. Some may argue that he is even better than IR which is debateable.

  ARR has a better voice compared to other MDs but his tamil pronounciation is not good at all...'kalvi payilum kaalam varayil thulli thiriyum engal vizhiyil' ...
  IR is also a good singer but his voice overshadows the fact that he is a good singer... when u hear repeated songs in a movie like idhayam oru kovil or pottu vaitha oru vatta nila, you can get the fact that his voice spoils his singing abilities. bharadhwaj was good in his song Thillothama in Kadhal mannan.. YSR/Suresh peters are all mediocre and try to hide their voice with music and try to imitate ARR.....No one has mentioned Shankar Mahadevan who is turning out to be a regular MD. Deva , chandrabose and MSV are all fit for gaana or speedy songs...

  ARR does lots of noise reduction and sampling after he sings. We all know we can make ARR sing like Phil Collins with the technology available. Lots of refining process is going on after ARR sings. Still one cannot say he is better than MSV. MSV has good modulation.

  IR's voice is like rubbing sandpaper on blackboard. screeechhhhh.

  Even HCARRF won't agree this mr.202.184.. ARR himself agreed that his voice is not that good.
  As if ARR is asked by every other MD to sing in their songs!!

  I think A.R.Rahman's voice is very expressive and has a lot of soul in it.He brings out the mood of the songs very well.Also, there is a lot of depth in his singing.
  Wish he would sing more often.
