I'm not referring to Bankimji's original version.
ARR version is out.But I think IR's version in Kaalapaani should be far better.
If you listen to the Tamil version you'll see that it has been sung by Mano and the lyrics are in Tamil but the Malayalam version has lyrics in Hindi and the song is sung by nearly 100 singers as a chorus....The tune is so unbelievably haunting and has great orchestration.

Each one is good in its own
respect. B'ji's version is
great as an official anthem.
IR's is great as a song
out 'nenja kumural'. Esp. for the
jail visuals.
ARR's version is also very good
as a youth's tribute to the nation.
These are beyond comparisons.

The best, is by lata mangheskhar, forgot the album in which it appeared.
It's more like a chorus and very fastpaced.

I was disappointed after I heard "VandE Mataram" songs by ARR. It lacks something that I could not understand, may be the patriotic fervour. Even "tamizha tamizha" in Roja was excellent and it did kindle the patriotism in us. But unfortunately, this song by ARR does not seem to be match that. I was moved to tears when I heard the IR's version of "thai pirandha dhEsam" in Siraichaalai.

Vande mataram was a song written and composed to invigorate the patriotic fervour among the I ndian masses who were ruled by the Britishers. This song was responsible in rejuvenating many patriotic Indians and in fact the word "Vande Matharam " was enough to rouse the patriotic temper of the people.
Such a song ,being sung as an entertainment is a great injustice to the patriotism of the Nation loving people. If ARR wants to compose one song let it be his own and this great song need not be molested like this.

The re-packaged "Vande Mataram" was a money making business idea by Bharat Bala. A R Rahman was used for the content...that's it. If you listen to Sting's - "If I ever lose my faith in you"...you'll see the similarities in the song rendition and even the video has similarities. Maybe Bharatbala "inspired" AR Rahman with this Video and hence the song too. Anyway it is a well known fact that AR Rehman's style of singing lifts heavily from Sting - for e.g. "Mustafa, Mustafa".

Vande mataram by Bankim chandra and its original tune is truly magical. It is the essense of patriotism pervading in the country at that time. We may have many tunes composed on the same lyrics but they would always come as poor second or third devoid of the patriot fervor of the people who composed that tune.
