To really know the kind of sensation that was caused by both Guddi and Bol Re Papi Hara, one should have been of film-music listening age, around 1970. For that full year there was no other song which had such an impact, and got so much air time - in the north and south. And for all that it was not even a commercial "Piya Thu Ab Tho Aaja" (which was also released the same year) type of song. Bol Re was based on Raga Miya Malhar.
Tidbit: Gulzar came out with an audio compilation of his 70s work a few years ago titled "Bol Re Papi Hara."

About this statement:
"Those were the days when people listened to LM and AB and LM and AB only most of the time."
Besides merit, one might also be prompted to ask this: Why did people listen to just them?
Although you claim you can't prove anything, you have proven everything in a way.
(In the VJ and Irony tradition: Not so long ago, the same OUTLOOK magazine declared Bol Re Papi Hara to be THE song of the 70s. Talk about short-term journalistic memory! :-))

It seems that Raju Bharadhan (a southie, incidentally) wrote the article choosing Bole Re as THE 70s song. he might have written it as a freelancer. so you cannot blame Outlook for their selective amnesia:) they didn't have VJ in their volatile memory in the first place.

Good one, s0.
RB is also a journalist of good repute (even as a freelancer, he does solidly researched features.)
Outlook, it seems, did have VJ in their memory, at least, for 15 minutes on 18 Aug (Neel's link dates the issue as 19, )but they didn't have a map of South India, the phone lines to Chennai were all down, and the editorial assistant had left for the day :-)

Naaz, thanks for the link. Let me see who is going to yell at SPB for his answer to the last question.

I do not remember any one in this thread having a view different from what SPB answered to the last question.

sonnalum..nalla solliyirukkaaru SPB..no mincing the words (even though this might affect his sons chances, if not his own). Very bold opinion. He must be pretty disgusted. I also feel mediocrity might become the order of the day (to some extent it is already).

This is also similar to VJs lament in the audio interview, where she says that "mediocrity is not only being accepted and appreciated, it is also being glorified."
Some newer MDs defend this emphasis (on bad singing and music as "naturalising" of tamizh,)as making it more "accessible" to everyone inside and outside of India that listens to film music. Like as if it were the sale of the week at the local grocery or something.

I am an admirer of VJ.I felt sorry for when Lata mangeskar ill treated her by chasing all background ochestra when she was about to sing in Hindi.VJ's voice is 1000 times better than Lata'S.I donot know why she has been dropped out in South India as a excellent singer.

If there is any media coverage of this protest, I hope you will provide that link too. (I am just curious as to the artistes who will participate in this. And how many will claim neutrality, and how many will be just AWOL!)

Naaz, Neel D,
I don't know the full context, but I think it has something to do with the Kaveri dispute! The latest issue of 'Kumudam' contains a full page photo of Ramesh Arvind with the ThirukkuRaL
'ennanRi konRaarkkum uyvuNdaam uyvillai
sey nanRi konRa magaRku',
with another comment in the bottom saying 'this kuRaL has nothing whatsoever to do with this photograph!!!!!'

I have not read the Kaveri dispute article, nor have I seen the photograph. But by the way you have added 5 exclamations (or was it the editor's work?) after the caption, I believe it was meant to be tongue(kural)-in-cheek? :-)
s0 -
I had the same problem. But now, after instructions from tamizh font veterans here, I've managed to fix it, and its has worked like magic (so far.)
It gives me great pleasure to know that you can read tamizh, and I am sure it will bring happiness to Neel as well - for it was he who expressed such a concern, and hoped you were tamizh literate! :-)

Naaz, please point me to the instructions from the font veterans. neengal pettra inbam peruga ivvaiyagam!

Here are Kik's instructions to me: (this is cut and paste - as I want to get the words right!)
" Naaz: Different sites have different fonts. If you are using explorer, you need to set view->encoding->user defined. Typically, at this point the page reloads using the correct font (if it has been installed). In netscape, I believe this is view->character set->user defined. But, you have to repeat this for every link you follow in the site/every time you go to this site again."
I have settled for using Netscape. I am sure this will work on Explorer as well. Don't know if this helps your particular problem...but this is the best I can do to spread the "inbam" :-)

thanks Naaz (& kik). I've tried all that before. no use for UNIX. someone ought to tell the pro-Tamil activists to hold a internet salai (info. super highway) mariyal pOrAttam against the discrimination and rejection of Tamil by UNIX computers :-)

Naaz,
Adding some half a dozen exclamatory marks is my style, something which I picked up from ‘Dina Thanthi / Rani’ in my childhood days!!!!!!
In a way, it is the mother of todays`smiley’(:-))!!!!!
