Suggestion #1: summa kannai mudikondu, MIC eduthu padavendiyathu thaan.
Suggestion #2 : See lot of MIC Mohan's films like uthayageetham...etc. You can find many ways for holding the MIC in odd ways, which will make u comfortable :-)))

hari, shall I also contribute:))
BTW, Omega here's what you should do:
If you are confident about your voice and singing ability, you have overcome the first and foremost hurdle! So, rule no. 1 is your confidence about your singing.
Initially and mostly for the very first song (assuming you will sing more than one song), your voice will start to tremble because of nervousness and this, I think, is true even for experienced singers. But, try to focus on singing. So, rule no.2 is focus.
There's an extraneous nuisance that goes with this: You will almost always hear your voice coming out of the microphone (speakers) to be slightly lagging than your own voice - which could be really disconcerting...this is sure to dirupt your rhythm a little bit (and more if you don't really catch up) if you're singing with an orchestra. (I think this happens if the auditorium or the sound arrangement is not that good). So, rule no. 3 is to concentrate and NOT to flicker by intrusions.
Once you have sung the first three or four lines (and have not invitied rolling stones from the audience!), you will start to feel comfortable...but ONLY if you start to go INTO the song ie you have let your emotions loose - and this you will certainly do if you really are enjoying singing. So, rule no. 4 to drift into the song.
After you are in this phase, henceforth your sailing (singing) will be smoother...here's where you try to do some improvisations, or emote better even than the actual singer, and give some creative touch here and there...and eventually bringing your song to a nice completion.
------- All of what I said so far mostly holds good if you're singing in a school or college level competition with or without orchestra. I don't have any experience of professional singing.
If you want to sing in an orchestra, the best way to learn is start singing in one, so your practice will take you past your fear. Another way to know about all this is to ask rajaG.

Karthi/RajaG,
"You will almost always hear your voice coming out of the microphone (speakers) to be slightly lagging than your own voice -"
Is there anyway that one can set up something at home to get a feel for this. I have heard that on the stage, a few speakers are placed on the stage facing the performers, so they can hear what they are playing. Perhaps that is the only way that one can hear what one is singing. It is very different than when you are not singing to a mike when you are hearing yourself at close quarters. Will singing along with a Karoke at home help ?
Thanks.

Sugrutha:
I am not sure I understand your question correctly. But,while on stage, one easy way to "hear" what one is singing is to close an ear completely. This ensures that the singer hears what he sings, "inside himself", wihtout any lag and also would help in keeping track of the instruments (especially the rhythm and atleast the scale chord) and singing syncronously.
And BTW, IMHO, this thread is far better than the insipid IR x ARR threads and is not completely impertinent to tfm.

MS, stage monitors are used as Sugrutha described. Closing one ear helps with sruthi, but does not give a good feedback about your voice w.r.t the orchestra - and it certainly looks odd, plugging one ear with a finger while on stage ;-)

:-) But I guess it would be weirder to sing something totally offbeat and off shruthi :-)

Don't project a (-) view of urself. Quitting never helps anybody. Even if the name is supposed to have a comical touch, it encourages those new to the singing field to do that likewise

Sugrutha: Sorry for the delayed response.
Normally, we have monitor speakers which will give us a feedback of what we are singing. In luxurious situations, we have also had monitor speakers with a dedicated mix and amplification - so that you can listen to the feedback the way YOU want to hear, not necessarily the way the audience or other musicians will be receiving it. Most of the time, there is a vocal effects processor added to your singing (in a simple case it is just reverb and/or delay) which if properly managed, smoothens the flow of your voice (at least the way you hear it) and makes singing more fun. The rules are simple - the more complex equipments you add, more chances of goof-ups by amateurs. Singing with a karaoke is a good practice, however the sounds on the stage with a live band is quite different. Almost all the instruments are louder and more distinct. Especially Lead/ Rhythm Guitar chords, Bass Drums, and Bass Guitar.
To give a short answer to your question, you must be lucky to get a good band to accompany you or atleast a band which knows when to tone down. 90% of the audience would NOT know if the guitarist should have played G# major instead of F minor, but they may know if the singer scr*ws up.
Relatively, a singer's task is easier on stage than that of the principal instrumentalist - but it is also the easiest to scr*w up:-)

Hello All,
My experience with stage singing with full orchestra is that, almost all the instruments on stage sound too loud and bothers you a lot. Moreover, there is no feedback of your voice. So, as rightly suggested by MS on an earlier posting my best method is to close one ear, so that atleast you get a feeback of what your voice/shruthi sounds like. This has helped me a lot. I have seen this method followed by a lot of professional singers on stage. So, I believe this is the simplest method to follow.
Another tip to follow is not to keep the MIC too close to too far away from your mouth and I think this is a common mistake by every one. Also, if one follows the beats of the table/drums and adjust the song comes out well
