Hi all,
I am really fascinated by all of your responses.
A BIG THANKS to all for you for having such high esteem of a very great singer.
Let me put forward what I feel. Susheela is a great singer and above all she is so down-to-earth and modest. I feel it is quite unreasonable to call Susheela as 'Lata Mangeshkar of the South' because I feel Susheela is special in her own way and should not be compared to anyone else.
Unfortunate part is that the south side never got the recognition it deserved. I feel had Susheela been in the North, she would have surpassed the fame and highlight got by Lata Mangeshkar because of her versitality (I know it is wrong comparing but still this fact cannot be denied).
Most of Lata's songs were high-pitched, stereo typed or without much emotion in the rendering.
Take a few of Susheela's - the tone in 'Aduthaathu Ambujatha Paarthelaa' and the pathos-filled 'Sonadhu needhaana' and how much variation was shown while singing for different artists - that one could tell on hearing the song if it was rendered for Savithiri or Saroja Devi.
Do u honestly feel such versitality existed in Lata Mangeshkar's voice - I dont think so. If u are considering the pitch, there are numerous songs :
- Naali indha velai
- etadukku maaligayil (Paadha kaanikkai)
- kaadhal siragai
- unnai ondru ketpaen
These are just to name a few.
Do let me know what u feel on this.
Regards,
Ravi

I want to know which film this song belongs to
"Mungil Illai maele, thoongum pani neere, thoongum pani neerai vangum kathirone". It is sung by P Susheela and I think it was written by Kannadasan.

It goes without saying that P.Susheela is a singer par excellence and her humility in no way belittle her achievements which in my opinion is grossly underrated, probably because she is a contemporary of Lata Mangeshkar. I think no one can hold a candle to Susheela. How many of us have taken solace in that mellifluous voice? and how many times we have been totally mesmerized by that golden voice? How many hours have we been immersed in the revererations that divine voice? Countless. I feel we are all lucky to hear the melodious songs rendered by the most beautiful voice of P.Susheela. Timeless and eternal. The unrivalled nightingale, the uncrowned empress of South Indian music.
Can we forget 'mannavan vandhanadi thozhi..", "amudhai pozhiyum nilavae..", "athaan ennathaan, avar..", "thamizhikkum amudhenru paer..", "gangai karai thotam..", .. the list will be endless..

Dear readers,
Without even slightly under-rating the pristine quality of P Susheela's voice, I want to remove some prejudiced statements made about Lata didi by some people out here. First of all dont say that Lata was not versatile. If you say this, it simply means that you haven't heard her enough. In any case , many of you people down south find it a bitter pill to swallow, that Lata and Asha are the unanimously proclaimed nightingales of light indian music.
The foll will prove to you how versatile Lata is:
Her marvellous semi-classical renditions include:
1) Her meera albums 'chala vahi des' and 'meera'
by Hridaynath
2) Her ghazal album 'Kalaam-e-ghalib'
This album brings out the fact that she is as good in the lowermost tones as in the highest.
( Mr Ravi - pay attention)
3) Listen to 'Ae dilruba' by Sajjad Hussain from
'Rustom Sohrab'. This song is BREATH-TAKING in every sense of the term.
4) Listen to 'Jo tum todo piya' from Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje, 'Yeh zindagi usiki hai' from Anarkali, 'Yara sili sili' from lekin, 'Kal Nahin Paye Jiya' from Chhotisi Mulakat. This will tell you of her enormous range (above 3 octaves). And do not forget 'vande Matarm'.
5) The startling range in her voice is also brought about by vigourous semiclassical thumris like 'Ek soutan ki lagi najariya', 'balma anari man bhave' by C Ramchandra, 'Ja main tose nahin bolun' from 'soutela bhai'
6) her classical album with Bhimsen Joshi!
She is equally good at frothy songs and even POP!!
Listen to her pop and rock-n-roll songs
from the films 'Mem Didi' (md - salil Chaudhary),
and 'Usne Kaha Tha'. Then listen to her cabaret songs from 'Intekam'. And listen to her amazing western classical-based numbers from "prem patra'.
The powerful bass of her voice is easily seen here.
As far as lack of emotion in her rendering
is concerned, i think your fundas are perverse. Lata is the queen of emotion. She can change the entire mood of her songs by subtly pronouncing a word in a different way. No wonder, KL saigal, AR Rahman, MS Subbalaxmi and Michel Jackson (YES him)have publicly praised her! There is a song , I dont recall from which film, composed by Vasant Desai, in which she has sung alternate stanzas in contrasting mood. The songs were picturised on heroine Shama in double role of identical twin sisters, one a vampish girl, and the other a mature lady. Therefore one stanza is a bhajan, the other is a cabaret. Its amazing. And dont forget that she brought tears to the eyes of Pandit Nehru with her 'Ae Mere Vatan ke logon'!
And listen to 'Kuchh dilne kaha' from Anupama if you sill dont believe in the strength of her lower notes.

Sriram,
Oh! Yes... It was very good to see Susheela in the morning interview. She appeared in another interview with Yugi Sethu as a new year special in "Nayyandi Durbar". But I missed the Malaysia program !. I guess the song from Pudhiya paravai was Chittu Kuruvi. What was the other song

It was nice to see PS in the interview - though the I must say it wasn't that informative. She was entertaining but very forgetful.

Well avr.. no one in his/her right mind would say that lata is a mere mortal.. that would almost amount to blasphemy..many people are just irked that PS is not that recogonized as Lata and we all know why coz Lata is from north and PS is from south. And what all you can attribute to lata can be attributed to PS also. If lata is the queen of emotion so is PS. Hear 'mannavane allalama' from karpagam, 'enna ninaithu' from nenjil or alayam, 'mayakam enna indhu' from vasantha maaligai.. I can go on like this. I am happy that lata is showered with laurels which she deserves. I am also bit sad that PS is not that recogonized and NOT due to lack of talent.

Apart from the first national award for "Naalai Intha Velai.." from Uyarntha Manithan, I guess she has won the national award two more times...The second was for " Chittukurivekanna kattupaadu?,Thenralae unakennakenna sontha veedu?". I do not remember the third award winning song..What was it ?
Karthi, As sriram as written, she has sung so many songs with almost every music director and probably with every male singer during the last 45 years...and I guess this is what makes remembering things difficult. When questions like " Do you have any experience where you became emotional while singing a song ? " is asked, I am sure a 100 pathos songs would have come to mind...result would be a blank for some time!

I had attended a recent light music concert by Susheela and TMS. It was a good one .... though Susheela's voice was clear enough, TMS's voice was cracked! During the concert, Susheela remarked that though the industry has forgotten them, she was grateful that the fans had not forgotten...and then went on to thank the audience. Was very touching ...

Dear readers,
I honestly feel that Lata is much better than P Suseela, though I greatly admire the latter as a singer. The reason: There was a Telugu film called 'Suvarna Sundari' in 1957 with all songs by P Suseela. There was a Hindi remake of the same film with all songs by Lata. There were totally 12-14 female songs in each movie. This gives a good and every fair comparison between Lata and Suseela. You'll realize that Lata is much better with regard to sweetness, range and speed of singing 'classical taans'. Surprisingly, the tunes are exactly same. In fact, because of the use of many Sanskrit words, the lyrics also have a great amount of similarity!!!!!!!
In fact, I had heard the Telugu version much before the Hindi version. there's no question of any bias. No wonder Lata is divine!!!!!11
