Lets make this a new year resolution. Lets not brand MDs like ARR & IR as copy cats. ( This is exactly what a thread in this tfm page is trying to do). They have not blatantly lifted any tune till now to my knowledge. Ive seen lotsa posts saying that 'this song has traces of this', 'the beginning of that song resembles this'....blah blah !! IMHO, these dont amount to lifting. Everytime they compose a new song, they sincerely try and are committed to compose an original song. This effort is what matters most to me. They just dont cheat ppl. Somehow resemblences creep in, but they dont do it on purpose.( MDs like Deva, SAR , Sirpi etc dont fall into this category ).
For the sake of argument, lets assume a talented person is given a task of composing a truly original tune (assume time & spending doesnt matter). After hearing that song, i bet i can come up with comments like 'the arrangement is similar to xyz song', 'the rhythm pattern sounds like xyz song', 'the background beats and loop resembles xyz song' 'it sounds similar to a song based on the same raaga' etc... The point is that, even if u sincerely and honestly try, there is bound to be some resemblance..The simple reason being 'Music existed in this universe even before life evolved. Whatever ppl do is just a permutation & combination of whatever is eternally existing'. Millions of musicians had existed in this world before any of our present day MDs were even born. They grew up listening to a variety of music and hence even if they consciously want to avoid resemblance, sub-consciously it will some how creep in. Now to compose original music against all these odds is in itself an achievement leave alone delivering hits and soul-stirring music.

right. good post. Coming to think of it, how are these people able to compose a new tune and that too to the liking of the people? Great. I feel ARR is in an even tougher situation because before him IR has exhaused some of the permutations and combinations :) !!!

Its not only the case of branding as copycats. I think we should give A.R.Rahman and Illayaraja the respect they deserve. Both are true maestros and a class apart from the rest of the Indian Film music composers.
We all should be proud to have born and lived in the same era along with these two musical maestros.

yeah, this is my thread!!!
had to wait so long to read so much peace in messages...
"'Music existed in this universe even before life evolved. Whatever ppl do is just a permutation & combination of whatever is eternally existing'"
yeah, this is a truth most of the people are not aware of at all... there is never anything really 'new'...the genius in a composer lies in trying to do a combination which has not been done by many people before...the more rare it is, the more great it is...but that's not the end of it, as someone said it should also be appealing to the people...cause there is no use in mixing notes somehow to get 'some' tune... it should have soul in it...u should see the effort behind it...and that's the difficult thing about it...
there are over 6 billion people on our earth, and if u manage to compose a song which at least 500 million has not heard yet in their entire life, then u are a true genius...
lets thank god for giving us ilayaraja and arr...
raycas
p.s.: happy new year to all of u...

"Music, like God, has no colour, language, religion, cast or other boundaries".
There is no other medium that is so universally appealing.
I hope we (TFM Page participants) can play our (minor) roles in using music to spread peace and harmony!!
This is my wish for the New Year.
Happy New Year everyone!!

Finally, a thread that needs to be given a its respect has come. Thanks for who ever who has started it and thanks in advance for those who are going to contribute here positively. Let's for a change talk only of the posotive things of ARR and IR....Is that posible?

Why not Common Friend ? Both are Trend Setters in TFM. There are lotsa good things about their music. Lemme start with one.
I have heard ppl say that IR finishes writing musical notes for the orchestra in no time...
I was fascinated when ARR used Dilruba for a happy song. Dilruba is usually played to convey sadness. But ARR used it to good effect in URVASI song ( in the first interlude ).
Hope to learn more abt the geniuses from you.
