Raja uses Flute very effectively in his songs.
The Flute interludes are present in many of his songs and are quite catchy.
Can we discuss further on this?

Raaja's flute interludes will ever linger in the mindsof Tamil audience. The numerous hits Raja has given would contain melodious raagas from the flutes.Take the ex of BG score in Nadodi Thendral. What about Idhayam. The grand success of NOTHING BUT WIND should prove the mastery of the great Maestro.Even the remotest hit of Raaja would have a small masterpiece of flute in it. IS ILAYARAAJA A REINCARNATION OF LORD KANNAN? I believe so.

"Chinnakannan azhaikkiraan"(BMK version)
has ravishingly beautiful flute pieces throughout the song.

The greatest and probably the longest flute
segment is from "thamthanam thana thAlam varum.."
from puthiya vArpugaL. flute azagA paatai
kootich-sellum. I wish I can write somehow how
the flute segment make yoy fly. This song is also one of the best for IR.
In an interview he mentioned that he was NOT at all satisified with the song - Jensy and Sasireka
were able to provide only 70% of what he planned
originally. Imagine how it would have been with
100%. He was too busy making too much movies ??

The flute interlude in "sandhana marbile" in Nadodi thendral is just excellent(flute ezhundhu vandhu pesum).

He has given so many lovely flute interludes,
Song 'Nee thane en ponn vasantham' in the film ninavellam nithya, the second interlude
has a beautiful flute piece.
'Sollai pushpangale' in the film ????, has good flute piece in the starting and may be in the
second interlude.
' Sundari neeyum' in MMMK, and so many other songs.
I think IR used violin and flute in most of his songs, and strangely I feel, that is a rare combination of instruments. May be some music buffs can enlighten me?.
Infact after listening to IR's real flute interludes, I started hating ARR's synthesised flute beats, though attimes they are not that bad.

To E. Hari:
ARR's songs in Roja are extraordinary and I just love them. But after Pudhiya Mugam, he failed to give such songs. If he could have given the same quality as he had given on Roja, people would have forgotten Raja. But Raja is just unbeatable! Nobody can given such music for long.

How many of you know that ArunMozhi who was introduced by IR is actually the flutist(Sorry if this terminology is wrong) in IR's troupe.

Yes!! Arunmozhi's real name is Napolean and he still continues to be the flutist for Raja. He had mentioned in an interview with vikatan that when he (Arunmozhi) had gone abroad for some concert for three months, IR did not use a flute in any of his songs. Hope we can get some of these songs and analyse them.
Coming back to the flute pieces. 'karavai maadu 3' - magaLIr mattum, 'innum ennai' - singaaravElan have terrific flute pieces.
But his best flute pieces, though very subtle came in 'ennuLLE' - vaLLi. In the pallavi, when Swarnalatha (probably the only minus point of the song - music, lyrics and picturisation were too good) sings
kaNNiraNdil nURu veNNilaakkaL thOnRum
paalaai un anal paayum
naadi engkum Edho naadha veLLam Odum
aanaalum enna thaagam
kaalaamenRa thErE Odidaamal nillu...
(Let me not get carried away by the lyrics and divert the topic...)
Here whenever she goes to the high pitch, the flute pitch comes down and vice versa. As somebody mentioned in some other query, one cannot explain the beauty of the song. One has to listen to it.
Like his violin list, his flute list is also never ending.
BTW, can anybody recall the flute BGM when Ranjitha is chased in the climax of 'amaithippadai'?

To cp.
There is no dobut ARR music in his first few films upto bombay, may be upto indra is really high quality. I still likes his songs, but there are some songs, when he tries to use synthesised flute, it sounds like some kid trying to practice whistling. eg. song in ennavele in kadhalan,
venneliva in kadahal desam, another song in the same film sung by unni and mano. I liked the starting music in 'uchillampatti' in the film gentleman, I think it is a flute piece.

To Arvind:
I am sure the first stanza in "Ennulle ennulle" is as follows:
"kaNNirandil nooru veNNilakkal thondrum
Analum anal paayum(note the comparison here, I do not think 'paalai' is right)
Naadiyum engum edho nadhal vellam odum
Analum enna thaagam
Mei silirkkum vannam thee valarthadhenna
Thoobam podum neram thoondil ittadhenna
Ennaiye kettu engenin naan
the second stanza is:
Koodu vittu koodu jeevan payum bodhu
Ondrirandai kalandhada
Oon kalandhu oonum ondru pada dhyanam
AaL niliaiyil arangera
Kalam ennum thErey aadidamal nillu
IkkaNathai pole inbam edhu sollu
KaNbavai yaavum sorgamE dhaan
Swarnalatha has rendered this song beautifully.
To Nammoor:
I think "ennulle ennulle" is one of the best love songs with excellent lyrics by Vali. Neengal IR dhasana, ellai annamalai dasana?(neengal siva siva endru solla vellai, avvalavu dhaan )

I did not want to give the entire lyrics as it was besides the topic. For the same reason, I did not pay much attention to first stanza, second stanza etc. I may have interchanged lines inadvertantly.
But your observation in the second line on the first stanza is wrong. It is 'paalaai un anal paayum'. Listen to the song carefully. Swarnalatha's pronounciation (in this song) is one of the worst in the History of TFM, though she has sung with appropriate emotions.
Moreover, the fourth line in the second stanza is
' aazhnilayil' and not 'aaL nilayil'. BTW, what does that 'aaL nilayil' mean?

Talking about pronunciation,
I find Anuradha Sriram's pron. quite annoying sometimes. Chitra-ve paravaa illai
pola thonuthu.
I vaguely recall she had some American
connetions. That could be a reason.

I think Gopal has given the answer for your doubt on the line "anaalum anal payum".
And for the second line it was "Aazh nilayil arangerum". Sorry, typo!

Coming back to the flute pieces, kAtrOdu kuzhalin nAdhamE has beautiful flutes.
The song of this month, too. There is a not-so-famous but sweet song
yEththi vechcha neruppinilE
which has some good flute pieces.

To quote from a magazine, bharatiraaja has said that, while they( IR,G.AMARAN & CO) were in school IR used to always have a bamboo sort of thing and try to play a note or two in that. Fibres of banana tree(I'm not sure if its tree or plant) were also used to mimic a guitar. Well, then that must have really carried with him in his formative years. Even in NBW IR stresses that , in the end of a song. You can hear a clattering sound of a flute falling down.

IR has given many a great flute piece in Telugu. I am not very familiar with his old songs in Tamil, but many of them had excellent flute pieces. In fact, Hariprasad Chaurasia himself had said that IR is one of the MDs who use flute the best.
IR's great flute pieces in Telugu:
1. 1st interlude of Madhura murali - "Oka radha iddaru krishnalu"
2. Ve vela gopem mala - "Sagara sangamam" - arguably among the very, very best he has given
3. 2nd interlude of Evevo andaalu - "Chanti"(Chinna thambi in Tamil)
4. Chalti ka naam gaadi - "Chettukinda pleaderu"
5. Chukkalu themmanna - "April 1st vidudala"
6. 1st interlude of Jallanta kavvinta - "Gitanjali"
7. 2nd interlude of porapaattu idhi - "Ladies Tailor".
Some other great flute pieces in Tamil
1. 2nd interlude of Potti vecha malliga muthu
2. 1st interlude of chandana maarbile (Nadoi thendral)
I may have missed out many ones.
Also, IR used to give some jazzy flute pieces which were characteristically slow and colored only by keyboard or guitar. He usedd to use this in all romantic situations for urban films. I wonder how one can obtain a cassette with all these.
Also, I think the days of IR's great flute pieces are over. Nowadays, the num,ber of his flute pieces is on the decline. However there are a few exceptions, notably "varna vrindavanam" from the Mallu film "Kaliyoonjalu" - its 1st interlude has a great jazzy flute piece.
